It tells you how much pressure the case was tested to withstand. It does not promise that the watch is suitable for every activity at that depth, and it does not replace the maker’s instructions for your exact model. On an affordable watch, the practical question is simple: what does the marking allow you to do, and what does the manufacturer say about that model?
What the number on the case actually measures
ISO 22810:2010 is the international standard that specifies requirements and test methods for water-resistant watches, along with the marking a manufacturer may apply to show the rating. The standard is published by the International Organization for Standardization and is listed in the ISO catalogue entry for the standard. Its scope is pressure resistance. A rated figure tells you what the case was tested against; it is not an independent guarantee of safe use at that literal depth in all conditions.
ISO’s own 2010 announcement makes the same point from a consumer angle. It says: “The manufacturer of a water-resistant watch may offer ratings to help consumers determine the sort of environment the watch can handle.” The same announcement notes that buyers may not fully understand the specifications, which is the reason the marking often causes confusion. The ISO 2010 announcement is the primary source for that wording.
ISO’s explanatory article in ISO Focus+ (April 2013) gives the pressure equivalence. One bar is approximately the overpressure at 10 metres of water depth, and 5 bar is the overpressure at 50 metres. These are conversions between units. They are not recommended depths for swimming, diving or any other activity. The ISO Focus+ explainer, April 2013 sets out this conversion.

How to read the common markings on affordable watches
Pressure markings and activity guidance are not the same thing, and each manufacturer publishes its own activity table. The table below reflects the guidance Seiko publishes in its general information FAQ and the guidance Casio gives in the module instructions it cites. It is not a universal chart. Use it to understand the typical meaning of each marking, then check the manual for the exact reference you are considering.
| Marking | Seiko’s listed uses (general information FAQ) | Casio’s cited guidance | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 bar | Splashes and rain | Not stated in the cited instructions | Swimming, showering, or any immersion |
| 5 bar | Swimming, yachting, showering | Swimming | Diving of any kind, or high-pressure water jets |
| 10 bar | Bathing and shallow diving | Additional activities listed in the manual for that module | Scuba diving or any depth beyond the maker’s stated activities |
| Diver’s watch | Treated as a separate category from ordinary water resistance | Not stated in the cited instructions | A specific depth or dive-computer use unless the manual states it |
Two points follow from the table. First, a 5 bar rating is the level both makers cite for swimming, so it is the lowest rating most readers should consider for pool or open-water swimming. Second, a 10 bar rating supports bathing and shallow diving in Seiko’s table, but that does not extend to scuba. Diver’s watches are a separate category under ISO’s framework, and the manual is the place to confirm which functions and depths apply to a given model.

Why a metre figure is not a dive depth
A case that says “100 m” or “200 m” invites a literal reading. Treating that figure as a safe working depth is the most common error with affordable watches. Seiko’s FAQ and the ISO explanation both separate ordinary water resistance from diver’s-watch status. A non-diver’s watch with a large metre figure has been pressure-tested to that figure, but that test does not establish suitability for scuba, saturation diving, or any depth where the wearer relies on the watch for safety. If you dive, the question to answer is whether the manufacturer names diving use for that model, not whether the number on the dial is large enough.
Showering, tap water and hot water
Showering is listed as a 5 bar activity in Seiko’s table, which is why many readers assume any 5 bar watch is safe under a shower. The Japan Clock and Watch Association (JCWA) gives a more cautious answer. Its Q&A on water resistance warns against showering directly with the watch on, and against applying high-pressure tap water, even to a watch rated 5 bar or higher. The JCWA water-resistance Q&A is the source for that caution.

In practice, treat showering as a case-by-case activity. Avoid direct jets, avoid high-pressure taps and avoid rinsing the watch under hot water. Hot water and soap can stress seals, and direct jets push water into areas that a static immersion test does not model.
Water resistance can decline over time
Seiko states that water resistance is not permanently guaranteed. It can be affected by ageing gaskets, and by deformation after accidental shock, such as a knock against a hard surface. A watch that was water-resistant when new may not be the same after several years of wear, after a drop, or after a battery change or case opening that was not done correctly. The rating on the case describes the watch as designed and tested; it does not track the condition of a worn seal.

After exposure to water, Seiko advises the following:
- Dry the watch after wearing it in water.
- If the watch was worn in ocean water, rinse it with fresh water.
- Do not wash the watch with the crown pulled out. Keep the crown fully pressed in during rinsing.
These steps come from the Seiko general information FAQ. If a watch has been dropped, has had its crystal or crown damaged, or has shown fogging after exposure, have it checked by an authorised service centre before you expose it to water again.

Matching a rating to your intended use
Choose the rating from the activity, not from the largest number available. Use this checklist:
- Daily wear, handwashing, rain: A 3 bar rating covers accidental splashes and rain in Seiko’s table. Do not take it swimming.
- Swimming, snorkelling at the surface, pool use: Look for 5 bar as the minimum, and confirm that the exact model’s manual lists swimming.
- Bathing, shallow diving, water sports: A 10 bar rating is the level Seiko lists for bathing and shallow diving. Confirm whether the manual names any water sports the watch is suited for.
- Scuba or any depth-dependent diving: Look for a watch the manufacturer describes as a diver’s watch, and confirm the depth and use in the manual. A 10 bar or 100 m figure on a non-diver’s model is not enough.
- Older watches or watches with known impacts: Have the seals checked before any water exposure, regardless of the rating printed on the case.
How to check the rating for a specific watch
- Find the model number on the caseback, the dial, or the box and papers.
- Search the manufacturer’s support site for that exact reference and download the manual or product instructions.
- Find the water-resistance section and compare the listed activities with what you plan to do.
- If the manual is not available, contact the manufacturer and ask whether the model is suitable for swimming, showering or diving, using the exact model number.
Do not rely on a retailer’s product title or a category label such as “dive-style” or “sport”. Those labels describe the look of the watch, not its tested capability.
Shopping note for affordable watches
Affordable watches often list a rating in the product title, and a search for “10 bar water resistant watch” will return many results. A 10 bar rating is a useful signal for bathing and shallow diving, but it is not a substitute for checking the manual for the specific model. Verify current specifications on the manufacturer’s own page before buying, because product listings and model revisions can change.
The same caution applies to a watch’s water resistance years after purchase. A rating printed on the case when the watch was new is a reference point, not a current measurement.

Common questions answered by the source documents
The most useful reading of a water-resistance rating is always the one the manufacturer gives for that exact model. The number on the case tells you what the case was tested to withstand. The manual tells you what the maker considers safe to do with it. Where those two differ, follow the manual, keep the watch dry where possible, and have seals checked when the watch is older or has been struck.
