Seiko Automatic vs. Quartz Watches: Which Should You Buy?

A practical guide to choosing between a Seiko automatic and a quartz watch, based on Seiko's own guidance on mechanical accuracy, service and magnetism, with the Presage SPB467 as a worked example.

Buy a Seiko automatic if you want a mechanical movement and can accept that its rate shifts with winding, wear, temperature and position, along with periodic professional servicing. Buy a quartz watch if you want a battery-powered movement that needs no winding. Because Seiko’s published guidance covers automatic watches in general but not a matched quartz comparison, the choice between the two should be settled model by model, using each watch’s own stated specifications rather than a blanket rule about movement type.

How a Seiko automatic keeps running

A mechanical watch runs on energy stored in a mainspring. Seiko’s guidance describes this as the core difference from a quartz movement, which is driven by a battery and a quartz crystal. The practical consequence for an automatic is that the watch’s energy supply, and therefore its rate, is not constant from one hour to the next. That is why the rest of this article focuses on what changes the rate and what the owner must do to keep the watch running well.

Automatic watches wind themselves from the motion of the wearer’s wrist. Seiko’s product pages also describe some automatics with manual winding as a backup or alternative, which means you should check each model’s winding instructions before buying rather than assuming the watch will wind itself in every case.

What Seiko says about mechanical accuracy

The clearest statement comes from Seiko Watch Corporation’s mechanical accuracy FAQ, which says: “The accuracy of mechanical watches changes slightly day by day, depending on several factors such as the amount the spring is wound, movements of your arm, temperature, and the position of the watch.”

  • Case diameter: 43.5mm
  • Gold tone second hand
  • Water Resistant To 165 Feet
  • Power reserve: approximately 41 hours
  • 21,600 vibrations per hour

Seiko also advises that a mechanical watch’s mean daily rate should be judged over a week or ten days of normal wear, not from a single day’s reading. A one-day check can mislead you, because the factors above change from day to day. If you test a new automatic, keep a log across that period and compare the average against the manufacturer’s stated precision for that exact model.

What this means for daily timekeeping

  • A wrist-worn automatic will show a different rate on a day you wear it constantly than on a day it sits in a box.
  • Seasonal temperature changes and the way you position the watch overnight can both affect the reading.
  • A watch that runs fast or slow by a few seconds on one day is not necessarily faulty; the meaningful measure is the average over a full week or more.

How much maintenance does a Seiko watch need?

Seiko recommends that owners have their watches serviced about every three years. The company qualifies this interval: the right frequency depends on the climate where the watch is worn and on how it is cared for. Treat three years as a general guideline rather than a fixed schedule, and ask a qualified service center to check the watch if it has been exposed to heat, moisture, dust or impacts.

The evidence reviewed for this article does not include service prices, so no cost comparison between automatic and quartz ownership can be drawn from it. Budget for servicing as a real ongoing cost of a mechanical watch, and check current rates with an authorized Seiko service provider in your region.

Magnetism affects both types

Seiko states that magnetic force can affect both mechanical and analog quartz movements, although the effects differ between the two. Magnetism is therefore not a problem unique to automatic watches, and a quartz watch is not immune to it. If you work near strong magnets, or keep your watch on a magnetic clasp or near a speaker or charger, check the manufacturer’s guidance for the specific model rather than assuming either movement type is safe.

A worked example: the Presage SPB467

The Seiko Presage SPB467 shows what to check on a specific automatic. Seiko’s US product page describes it as an automatic with manual winding, with the specifications below. These figures apply to this model only; they do not describe Seiko’s automatic range as a whole.

Stated precision +25 to -15 seconds per day Seiko Watch Corporation US product page, undated, accessed 2026
Power reserve Approximately 72 hours (3 days) Seiko Watch Corporation US product page, undated, accessed 2026

Water resistance 10 bar Seiko Watch Corporation US product page, accessed 2026

The precision range is the figure most worth checking against your own use. A ±40-second window across a day is a stated tolerance, not a promise about your wrist. Seiko’s own guidance on weekly averaging, described above, is the right way to judge whether a particular SPB467 performs within that range for you.

What the evidence does not establish about quartz

The evidence reviewed for this article does not include a matched Seiko quartz model with published precision, service interval or battery life, so it cannot support a claim that quartz is more accurate, cheaper to own or less demanding than an automatic. Do not accept a general claim of that kind without checking a specific quartz model’s stated specifications and its maintenance guidance.

Current prices and lineups also change. The USD 950 figure for the SPB467 is a snapshot from Seiko’s US page in 2026, and local prices, availability and sellers should be checked directly before you buy.

Decision guide: which one fits your use

  1. Choose an automatic if you enjoy a mechanical movement, will wear the watch regularly or wind it manually when needed, and accept that the rate will vary with the factors Seiko lists.
  2. Choose a quartz watch if you want a battery-powered movement without winding and are prepared to judge that model’s precision on its own published specification.
  3. Compare the exact models on stated precision, winding or battery requirements, power reserve or battery interval, service guidance, case size, water resistance and local price.
  4. Test before you rely on it. For an automatic, keep a week or ten-day log of actual wear and compare the average to the model’s stated precision.

Because the evidence supports a clear answer only for the automatic side of the comparison, the Seiko automatic is the better choice for buyers who want a mechanical watch and accept its ownership demands. For buyers who want a quartz watch, the deciding factors should come from that specific model’s published specifications, not from a general rule.
