Citizen describes mineral crystal as more flexible and less prone to shattering, so it is the option its maker positions for people who worry more about impacts. Neither material is damage-proof, and the right answer depends on the specific watch you are considering.
What each material is
Sapphire crystal
Citizen explains that the sapphire used in watches is synthetic, made from crystallized aluminum oxide. On the Mohs hardness scale, Citizen gives it a rating of 9. Casio Europe, in its own watch-glass guide, also lists sapphire at 9 Mohs.
Mineral glass (mineral crystal)
Casio Europe lists mineral glass at 5 Mohs. Citizen describes mineral crystal as more flexible than sapphire and less prone to shattering, and says it suits everyday watches as well as some Promaster dive models. Citizen presents this as its own rationale for those models, not as a universal rule that applies to all mineral crystals.
Scratch resistance versus breakage: the actual trade-off
The Mohs scale ranks materials by how well they resist being scratched by harder substances. It is a relative ranking, not a measure of impact strength. The 9-versus-5 difference therefore tells you that sapphire resists scratching considerably better. It does not tell you how likely either crystal is to crack or shatter in use.

Casio Europe’s guide is direct about the limit of sapphire. Its wording, credited to its watch-expert contributor Britta Rehme in the guide, reads:
“Sapphire watch glass is extremely scratch-resistant and shatterproof – but not unbreakable.”
That sentence is the most accurate summary of the trade-off. Sapphire is very hard and resists scratches, but a hard surface can still crack under a hard enough blow. Mineral crystal gives up some scratch resistance in exchange for the flexibility Citizen describes.

What is not established is just as important. Neither manufacturer’s public material includes a controlled impact test comparing sapphire and mineral crystal, and no breakage rates are published for either. The sources do not show how crystal thickness or case construction changes breakage risk, and they do not offer a numerical comparison of optical clarity or glare between otherwise equivalent watches. Any claim that one material breaks a specific percentage less often than the other would go beyond what is currently published.

How to confirm which crystal your watch has
Crystal material is set per model, so a brand name or a watch family does not tell you what is fitted. Check the exact watch before you rely on either material.
- Find the model reference number printed on the caseback or in the original papers.
- Open the manufacturer’s official product page for that exact reference and read the crystal line in its specifications.
- Check the owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s instructions for the same model. Casio recommends this route for confirming the crystal.
- Treat any water-resistance symbol as an informal check only. Casio describes its water-drop indication as informal and not a substitute for model documentation.
- Check availability before treating a listing as a purchase option. A Citizen Stiletto AR3050-52B product page lists sapphire, but the model is labelled discontinued and sold out, so that page does not function as a current recommendation.
Choosing by how you will wear the watch
- Daily wear where scratches are the main worry: sapphire fits the stated priority, since its scratch advantage is the clearest difference between the two materials.
- Active use where impacts are more likely: mineral crystal matches Citizen’s flexibility and shatter-resistance rationale, but confirm that the specific model uses it before assuming so.
- Dive watches: Citizen names some Promaster dive models with mineral crystal. Check the exact dive model rather than the family name, because Citizen’s statement does not cover every Promaster watch.
- Buying on a tight budget or a specific feature set: compare the crystal on the same model in each configuration. The material should not be the only deciding factor.
Price, replacement and repair
The sources do not establish a general price premium for sapphire. Prices vary by watch model, features, market and availability. Casio Europe lists example euro prices in its guide, but those figures are market-specific and change over time, so check the current model page before using any price.

Replacement crystals must match the watch. Citizen offers parts and service resources, but neither the typical cost nor universal service availability is published in the material reviewed. Ask the manufacturer or an authorized service centre to confirm the correct crystal for your reference before ordering a replacement.
Caring for each type of crystal
Casio Europe’s care guidance applies to both materials in general terms:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- Take extra care around domed sapphire crystals.
- Avoid harsh chemicals.
- Follow the cleaning and care instructions in your model’s manual, since these guidelines are general.
Which to choose
Choose sapphire if scratch resistance is the priority, and accept that it is not unbreakable. Choose mineral crystal if the manufacturer-described flexibility and lower shatter risk matter more to you, understanding that it scratches more easily. In both cases, confirm the crystal in the official specifications for the exact model before buying.
