Casio Edifice EFK-100: Forged-Carbon Dials and Mechanical Movements Explained

Casio’s Edifice EFK-100 introduces an automatic mechanical movement, a visible caseback, and carbon-inspired designs. Here is how the genuine forged-carbon CD, electroformed D models, and European XPB differ.

The Casio Edifice EFK-100 is the brand’s first Edifice line with an automatic mechanical movement and, according to Casio’s June 2025 announcement, the first mechanical movement in a Casio timepiece. The collection pairs that movement with a motorsport-inspired case, a see-through back, sapphire crystal, and forged-carbon-themed dials—but the material differs by model.

Why the Casio Edifice EFK-100 matters

The Casio Edifice EFK-100 is significant because it brings an automatic mechanical movement to the Edifice family for the first time. Casio’s June 16, 2025 announcement also described it as the first mechanical movement used in a Casio timepiece. That makes the EFK-100 more than a cosmetic update to the motorsport-inspired Edifice range: it is Casio’s entry into a type of watchmaking the brand had not previously used in its watches, at least according to the company’s announcement.

The collection combines a visible mechanical movement, a see-through caseback, 100-meter water resistance, sapphire crystal, and a carbon-inspired dial design. There is an important distinction, however: only the EFK-100CD-1A has the genuine forged-carbon dial in the standard lineup. The blue, green, and white EFK-100D models use electroforming to reproduce the look and texture of forged carbon.

For readers shopping now, search by the complete reference number rather than simply “EFK-100.” Casio’s current U.S. catalog shows the EFK100CD-1A, EFK100D-2A, and EFK100D-7A, while the green EFK-100D-3A and premium black EFK-100XPB-1A are documented in Casio’s international and European materials but are not shown in the U.S. lineup reviewed for this article.

Forged carbon versus an electroformed carbon pattern

The EFK-100CD-1A is the clearest expression of the collection’s forged-carbon theme. Casio describes forged carbon as a carbon-fiber-and-resin composite formed under high temperature and pressure. Because the material is compressed during production, it develops a naturally irregular, marbled pattern rather than a uniform weave.

The EFK-100D-2A, EFK-100D-3A, and EFK-100D-7A should not be described as having forged-carbon dials. Casio says their blue, green, and white dials use electroforming to reproduce the texture or appearance of forged carbon. They share the visual idea, but they do not use the same genuine forged-carbon dial construction as the CD model.

The EFK-100XPB-1A is different again. Casio Europe describes forged carbon being used for both its case and dial, paired with a matte-black resin bracelet. It is the most elaborate and visually monochromatic version of the series, as well as the largest model at 40 millimeters in diameter.

Movement and mechanical-watch specifications

All of the EFK-100 models use automatic winding with the option of manual winding. The official specifications give the movement approximately 40 hours of power reserve, 24 jewels, and a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour. The movement also includes a hacking function, allowing the seconds hand to stop while the time is being set, plus a date display.

  • Movement type: automatic mechanical, with manual winding
  • Power reserve: approximately 40 hours
  • Jewels: 24
  • Frequency: 21,600 vibrations per hour
  • Accuracy specification: a mean daily rate of -35 to +45 seconds
  • Functions: hours, minutes, seconds, date, and hacking

The stated accuracy range is the manufacturer’s specification, not a result from independent testing. It is also considerably broader than the tolerance associated with a quartz Edifice watch, which is an important practical trade-off when choosing the EFK-100. Mechanical watches can also stop if they are not worn or manually wound for longer than their power reserve.

Casio’s official material identifies the watch as mechanical but does not name the movement supplier or caliber. It is therefore not accurate to call the movement Casio-manufactured or to assign it a specific caliber without additional documentation.

Case, crystal, bracelet, and water resistance

The standard EFK-100CD and EFK-100D models measure 39 millimeters across, 43.5 millimeters from lug to lug, and 12.5 millimeters thick. The EFK-100CD-1A is listed at 148 grams. Its case and bezel are stainless steel, and it uses a solid stainless-steel bracelet with polished and hairline-finished surfaces and a one-touch three-fold clasp.

Other standard equipment includes:

  • sapphire crystal;
  • 100-meter water resistance;
  • magnetic resistance;
  • a screw-lock, see-through caseback; and
  • luminous details on the hour and minute hands.

The transparent caseback is especially relevant to this launch. It lets the wearer see the mechanical movement, making the EFK-100’s automatic construction part of the ownership experience rather than something hidden behind a solid back. The dial uses three hands, raised indexes, and a date window, retaining the sporty, instrument-like design language associated with Edifice.

Casio Europe lists the EFK-100XPB at 40 millimeters in diameter, compared with 39 millimeters for the standard models. The European description also gives the XPB more than 40 hours of power reserve, while Casio’s international and U.S. product information generally says approximately 40 hours. “Approximately 40 hours” is the safer collection-wide description.

Launch prices and release timing

Casio’s international announcement was dated June 16, 2025. In Europe, Casio announced presale availability on July 15, 2025, with sales scheduled to begin August 1, 2025. The European recommended retail prices were:

Model group European launch RRP
EFK-100D models EUR 279
EFK-100CD-1A EUR 299
EFK-100XPB-1A EUR 449

U.S. product-page reporting from July 2025 listed the EFK100D-2A and EFK100D-7A at $280 and the EFK100CD-1A at $300, with a U.S. release planned for July 2025. These figures should be treated as launch or listed prices, not guaranteed prices for August 2026 or any later purchase date. Retail pricing, stock, and regional distribution can change.

Which EFK-100 should you choose?

Choose the EFK-100CD-1A for genuine forged carbon

The CD-1A is the natural choice if the material itself is the reason you are interested in the collection. It has the genuine forged-carbon dial, stainless-steel construction, and the same automatic movement and core specifications as the standard D models. It is also the most straightforward model to find in the current U.S. catalog alongside the blue and white variants.

Casio Men's Quartz Sport Watch with Stainless Steel Strap, Silver-Tone, 22 (Model: EFV620D-1A2V), TBA
  • Sporty & Stylish Design: Features a striking blue bezel and silver-tone stainless steel strap, inspired by motorsports for a bold and fashionable look.
  • Chronograph Functionality: Includes a 1/10-second stopwatch with dials for stopwatch seconds, minutes, and 1/10 seconds, perfect for precise timing.
  • Durable Stainless Steel Construction: Built with a robust stainless steel case and band, complemented by a screw-lock back and mineral glass for added durability.
  • 100M Water Resistance: Designed for daily wear, swimming, and light water activities, offering reliable performance up to 100 meters.
  • Convenient Date Display: Stay organized with a built-in date display for everyday practicality.

Choose an EFK-100D model for color and a lower launch price

The EFK-100D-2A, EFK-100D-3A, and EFK-100D-7A use electroformed dials with the forged-carbon look. That makes them appropriate choices if you prefer the blue, green, or white colorway, but the dial material should not be confused with the genuine forged carbon used on the CD model. The D models were also positioned below the CD in European launch pricing.

Choose the EFK-100XPB for the most unusual case treatment

The XPB-1A is the premium version, with forged carbon on both the case and dial, an all-black finish, and a matte-black resin bracelet with folding clasp. Its 40-millimeter case is slightly larger than the standard 39-millimeter models. Casio Europe lists it, but the current U.S. catalog reviewed for this article does not; buyers should verify local availability before treating it as a U.S. option.

What to check before buying

  1. Confirm the complete reference number. “EFK-100” covers materially different watches. Check whether the listing is for the CD, D, or XPB version.
  2. Verify the dial construction. The CD-1A has genuine forged carbon. The D models have electroformed patterns that reproduce its appearance.
  3. Check your regional catalog. The blue, white, and CD models appear in the current U.S. collection reviewed, while the green D-3A and XPB-1A are documented in European or international sources.
  4. Confirm current price and stock. The 2025 prices are useful reference points, not promises about current retail pricing.
  5. Account for mechanical-watch ownership. Expect the watch to require winding or wearing after it runs down, and remember that the stated -35 to +45 seconds-per-day specification is not quartz-level accuracy.
  6. Buy the watch, not an assumption. A product title that says “forged carbon” may refer to the actual CD dial, a visual reproduction on a D model, or the XPB’s forged-carbon case and dial. Read the exact specifications.

If you are comparing listings, begin with the Casio Edifice EFK-100 automatic watch series, then narrow the search to the exact reference number. That approach helps avoid confusing the genuine forged-carbon EFK-100CD-1A with an EFK-100D model that only reproduces the pattern.

Bottom line

The EFK-100 is an important Casio launch because it adds an automatic mechanical movement to the Edifice range and, according to Casio, marks the company’s first mechanical watch movement. Its strongest technical and design features are the approximately 40-hour power reserve, hacking function, visible caseback, sapphire crystal, 100-meter water resistance, and motorsport-inspired carbon theme.

The model distinctions matter. Buy the EFK-100CD-1A if genuine forged carbon is essential; select an EFK-100D for its color and forged-carbon-style appearance; and treat the EFK-100XPB-1A as a geographically limited premium version unless your regional Casio catalog confirms it. In every case, verify the exact reference, local availability, current price, and the difference between a real forged-carbon component and an electroformed imitation of its texture.
