The Casio G-Shock Rangeman GW-9400-1 is a strong pick if you want a rugged digital watch with solar charging, radio time calibration and an altimeter, barometer and compass. It is not an evidence-based choice for everyone: its case is 18.2 mm thick and weighs 93 g, while the GW-9500 Mudman is thinner and has a dual-layer display designed to make compass readings easier to see. The better watch depends on whether you value the Rangeman’s package or the Mudman’s slimmer profile and display.
What the GW-9400 Rangeman offers
Casio describes the GW-9400-1 as a Triple Sensor watch, with sensors for altitude, barometric pressure, temperature and direction. The official specifications also list shock resistance, 200-meter water resistance, Tough Solar charging and Multi Band 6 radio-controlled time adjustment. Casio’s GW-9400-1 product page is the reference for the model’s specifications.
It includes practical timekeeping functions alongside the sensors: world time covering 31 time zones and 48 cities plus UTC, sunrise and sunset display, a 1/100-second stopwatch, a 24-hour countdown timer, five daily alarms and a white LED backlight. The sensor time-stamp function can store up to 40 manual readings.
How large is the Rangeman?
Casio lists the GW-9400-1 at 55.2 × 53.5 × 18.2 mm and 93 g, with a resin case, bezel and band. Those dimensions make it a substantial watch; check them against your wrist and fit preferences before buying. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements.

What can its sensors measure?
Altimeter
The altimeter’s display range is -700 to 10,000 m, with a 1 m display unit (5 ft.). Casio lists 40 manual records, automatic high- and low-altitude records, cumulative ascent and descent, and a selectable measurement interval.
Barometer
The barometer display range is 260 to 1,100 hPa. The watch also has a 42-hour pressure-tendency graph and a pressure-change alert. These are atmospheric-pressure readings and features, not a guarantee of a weather forecast.

Compass
The digital compass displays 16 points over a 0–359° range, in 1° units, and supports 60 seconds of continuous measurement. Its listed functions include bidirectional calibration, magnetic-declination correction and bearing memory.
Thermometer
The thermometer’s stated range is -10 to 60 °C (14 to 140 °F). It reports ambient temperature; it should not be treated as a body-temperature measurement. Casio’s published specifications give ranges and functions but do not guarantee field accuracy under every condition.

Solar charging and time calibration
Tough Solar supplies power, while Multi Band 6 can adjust the time using radio signals. Casio estimates about eight months of operation after a full charge with no further light exposure, or about 23 months in darkness with Power Saving enabled. These are manufacturer runtime estimates under the stated conditions, not a promise for every pattern of use. Without signal calibration, Casio lists accuracy at ±15 seconds per month.

Durability claims and limitations
Casio says the GW9400-1 took part in an Element laboratory program involving selected environmental and mechanical tests. The manufacturer limits that testing claim to the GW9400-1 within the GW9400 collection and says the watches are not specifically endorsed by a military branch. It is therefore more accurate to describe this as testing under selected procedures than to call every GW-9400 variant military-certified or military-endorsed. See Casio’s Mil-Spec information.
The GW-9400 is a standalone watch; the cited specifications do not establish GPS navigation, smartphone connectivity or heart-rate tracking. Sensor readings also depend on conditions and use, so they should not be treated as guaranteed measurements for every situation. Casio lists 200-meter water resistance, but that rating is not a substitute for checking care guidance for the watch.

Who should buy the GW-9400?
- Consider it if you want a solar-powered, radio-calibrated digital watch with a compass, altimeter and barometer, plus conventional timing and alarm functions.
- Check the fit first if you prefer compact or low-profile watches; the published case dimensions and weight are substantial.
- Compare the GW-9500 if a thinner case and the dual-layer compass display matter more to you than choosing the GW-9400’s design.
- Verify the exact listing for your region and model suffix. No stable, region-independent current price or inventory figure is established here.
Casio’s published features make the GW-9400 a compelling outdoor-oriented G-Shock, but they do not establish it as the best G-Shock overall. Choose it for its particular sensor, charging and timekeeping combination, not on the basis of a universal ranking.
