Gerard Nijenbrinks’s review presents a lightweight, solar-powered sports watch with useful everyday features and one conspicuous flaw: its loose bezel can slip out of alignment.
What Fratello meant by “the cheapest watch ever covered”
Gerard Nijenbrinks used the phrase in his September 25, 2017 Fratello Watches review. It describes the watch’s place in the site’s coverage history at that time. It does not establish a current ranking of Fratello’s articles or a market-wide record.
The review listed a U.S. price of $49 and a then-current street price of $35 including shipping from Amazon and other dealers. Those are historical 2017 prices, not current offers. No current exact-reference Casio product page, production status, retailer listing, or live price is established here.
What the MRW S300H-8BVCF offers
Lightweight construction and fit
The review gives the case dimensions as 43 mm across and 12 mm thick, with a weight of 44 g. It describes a resin case and strap, a stainless-steel caseback, and a recessed acrylic crystal. Nijenbrinks liked how the strap met the case and reported that the watch wore comfortably.
#1 Best Overall
- 330 ft. (100 M) water resistance. In general, suitable for recreational surfing, swimming, snorkeling, sailing and water sports.
- 12/24-hour timekeeping, 43 mm resin case with mineral dial window, Japanese quartz movement; Analog: 3 hands (hour, minute, second)
- Case / bezel material: Resin; Rotating bezel
- Day and date display at 3 o’clock
- Analog display, molded resin band with buckle closure; Accuracy: ±20 seconds per month
Clear hands and numerals
Nijenbrinks praised the large white hands, prominent numerals, and bold, raised-looking indices for making the dial easy to read. He observed that the hands and numerals glow at night, while the indices do not; he still found the watch readable in the dark. These are the reviewer’s observations, not results from an independent legibility test.
Solar quartz movement
The review describes a Japanese quartz movement powered by a solar dial, with stated accuracy of 15 seconds per month. It also says a low-battery warning is shown by the second hand advancing in two-second intervals. Nijenbrinks claimed that less than 30 minutes of bright sunlight could fully charge the watch and keep it running for weeks; treat that as the review’s 2017 claim, not a general Casio guarantee.
Rank #2
- 100m water resistant, 3-hand analog, day/date display, 12/24 hr
- Bi-directional rotating bezel, battery: sr626sw, approx. Battery life: 3 years
- Quartz Movement
- Case Diameter: 43mm
- Water Resistant To 100m (330ft): In General, Suitable for Swimming and Snorkeling, but not Diving
Casio’s QW-5330/5493 operation guide describes a solar panel, two-second hand movement at low charge, and approximate charging times that vary with light conditions. The guide is useful context, but the available information does not verify that its specifications apply to this exact MRW S300H reference or its module.
Is it a dive watch?
No. Fratello describes the design as a “classic diver-look” and explicitly distinguishes its appearance from a diver’s watch. The review gives the water resistance as 100 meters and says that makes it suitable for swimming and snorkeling. That does not establish scuba suitability or professional dive-watch performance.

- LONG-LASTING BATTERY LIFE: Up to 3 years on a single battery means fewer interruptions and more time on your wrist — backed by quartz movement accurate to ±20 seconds per month for consistent, reliable timekeeping day after day.
The bezel is the main compromise
Nijenbrinks’s central criticism was that the bidirectional bezel turns too easily and often ends up off-center. That matters if you want a bezel to hold a precise timing position: a bezel that slips can undermine the timing reference. The reviewer joked that it was better suited to timing something like an egg boiling than to demanding timing use.

The exact reference, MRW S300H-8BVCF, is a useful search phrase because it identifies the watch in Fratello’s historical review. But the review’s old mention of Amazon does not verify a current listing, price, stock, or seller. Check that a listing matches the full reference and confirm its condition, region, and price before buying.

Do not confuse this solar MRW S300H with current MRW-200H variants. Casio’s MRW-200H-2B2V product page describes a related model, not the exact watch covered in Fratello’s review. Similar names do not establish identical power systems or specifications.
