The Catalyst 50M Waterproof Case with Band is the Series 1-specific option for a 42mm Apple Watch. Catalyst rates it to 165 ft (50 m) and recommends it for bathing, surface swimming and shallow snorkelling—but that rating is a manufacturer claim, not an independently verified test result in the sources reviewed. The key compatibility warning: this case fits the original Apple Watch and Series 1, not Series 2.
What the Catalyst Series 1 case is—and what it costs
Catalyst’s US waterproof collection lists the Catalyst 50M Waterproof Case with Band for 42mm Apple Watch Series 1 at $59.99 USD as of October 8, 2026. It is a protective housing sold with a band, rather than a standalone screen protector. Price, color choices and stock can change.
Do not confuse it with Catalyst’s separate 100M waterproof case with band for 42mm Series 2/3, listed at $69.99 USD, or the 100M sport-band version, listed at $79.99 USD on the same US collection page. Those are different products for different watch generations; the Series 2/3 model is not a substitute for a Series 1 watch.
Compatibility: Series 1 and original Apple Watch only
Catalyst says this 42mm case fits Apple Watch Series 1 and the original Apple Watch. It does not fit Series 2. Catalyst attributes the mismatch to a 0.9 mm depth difference: Series 2 is 11.4 mm thick, compared with 10.5 mm for Series 1 and the original Apple Watch. A case can look like the right size by screen diameter and still fail to fit because the watch body differs.

Check the generation of your watch before ordering. In particular, do not choose the 42mm Series 2/3 waterproof case for a Series 1 watch simply because both are 42mm.
What the 50 m waterproof rating means in practice
Catalyst states that the Series 1 case is IP68 certified and “100% tested IP68 waterproof,” with a stated depth rating of 165 ft (50 m). The reviewed product and FAQ pages do not independently substantiate the certification details or test conditions, so these should be understood as Catalyst’s specifications rather than an independent test finding.

Catalyst recommends bathing, surface swimming and shallow snorkelling. It warns that pressure can change quickly, including when starting a swimming stroke, and advises against pressing the watch buttons underwater because doing so may increase pressure on the case and let water in. The stated depth rating alone does not establish suitability for diving or every underwater activity.
Water protection and touchscreen behavior are separate issues. Catalyst notes that water can activate the capacitive screen: underwater, it may register continuous touch, and droplets can confuse input. Its FAQ addresses whether the Apple Watch can be used underwater with the case and whether the touchscreen functions normally; the practical answer is that the housing’s water-protection claim does not guarantee reliable touch control in water.

Controls, sensors and charging
Catalyst says the screen-less housing leaves the touchscreen and Force Touch accessible. The company also says heart-rate sensing continues with the same sensitivity, and that the magnetic charging dock, microphone and speaker work through the case. These are manufacturer functionality claims; the reviewed sources do not include independent testing of them.
Band dimensions and fit
Catalyst lists a 9.5 in (240 mm) band length, a maximum wrist diameter of about 2.8 in (73 mm), and a 24 mm band width for the 42mm Series 1/2 band. The FAQ does not give a minimum wrist measurement, so buyers with smaller wrists should not assume the band will tighten to a particular size based on the published dimensions alone.

Who should consider it?
- Consider it if you have a 42mm Series 1 or original Apple Watch and want Catalyst’s case-and-band setup for its stated bathing, surface-swimming or shallow-snorkelling use.
- Do not buy it for a Series 2 watch; Catalyst identifies a body-depth difference that prevents the Series 1 case from fitting.
- Look elsewhere or verify sizing first if the published maximum wrist diameter does not suit you or you need a stated minimum band fit.
- Keep expectations measured if you need dependable touch input underwater or protection for diving; Catalyst’s own guidance does not establish those uses.
At the listed US price, the decision rests on exact generation fit and whether Catalyst’s stated use cases match yours. The product information supports a narrowly defined case for older compatible watches, not a universal Apple Watch waterproof accessory.
