Cecil Purnell Pit Lane Tourbillon Watch Review

The Cecil Purnell Pit Lane pairs an open-worked racing-inspired design with a visible tourbillon. Here’s what current listings and historical reports establish—and what they don’t.

The Cecil Purnell Pit Lane is a 46mm, 10-piece skeletonized tourbillon watch offered in white gold and rose gold, with the brand listing prices from CHF 210,000. Its appeal is immediate and specific: an angular, racing-inspired case frames an exposed movement, a tourbillon at 6 o’clock and a big-date display near 12. The available product information supports a review of its design and specifications, but not claims about measured accuracy, comfort, or real-world legibility.

What the Pit Lane is—and what is currently listed

Cecil Purnell describes the Pitlane as a skeletonized tourbillon. The current product pages list two versions, white gold and rose gold, each with a 46mm case, 5 ATM water resistance, a 10-piece limited edition and a starting price of CHF 210,000. These are the manufacturer’s current listings, accessed in 2026; price and availability can change, and two product pages do not establish that either version is in stock. See the Pitlane White Gold and Pitlane Rose Gold pages.

The design language is deliberately mechanical and track-inspired: an open-worked dial, angular case geometry, exposed screws, dark accents and a notched bezel marked with track-like numerals. The manufacturer places the tourbillon at 6 o’clock and describes a skeletonized big-date mechanism near 12. Luminescent hands provide a conventional time-reading reference amid the visible mechanics.

How well does the design serve as a watch?

The layout makes the tourbillon and date part of the visual composition rather than hiding them behind a conventional dial. That makes the Pit Lane compelling as a display of mechanism, but it also creates a practical question: the open architecture and prominent complication compete for attention with the hands. The product descriptions establish the arrangement, not how quickly or clearly the time can be read in different lighting or at a glance. No independent legibility testing is documented here.

Likewise, the watch’s racing cues and large case may suggest a sporty purpose, but they do not establish wrist comfort or suitability for strenuous use. A 5 ATM rating is the manufacturer’s stated water-resistance figure; it should not be mistaken for a dive rating.

Specifications and historical reporting

Some older reporting gives figures that differ from the current product pages. The 2013 Montre24 report described a 45mm case and 50 meters of water resistance, while the current Cecil Purnell pages list 46mm and 5 ATM. Those source-specific figures should be kept distinct rather than treated as interchangeable confirmations.

Detail Current listing or historical report
Case and water resistance Current official pages: 46mm and 5 ATM. Montre24, 2013: 45mm and 50 meters.
Movement Montre24, 2013, identifies a manual-winding Cecil Purnell CP-V13 with 19 jewels, 21,600 vibrations per hour and a 60-hour power reserve. The current official product pages reviewed do not identify a calibre.
Functions and layout Hours, minutes, date and tourbillon were reported by Montre24 in 2013. The 2016 watchfeed account describes a skeletonized display and date discs at 12 o’clock.
Edition Current official pages list 10 pieces; watchfeed also reported a 10-piece edition in 2016.
Price Current official pages list prices from CHF 210,000. watchfeed reported approximately US$200,000 retail in 2016; that is a historical figure in a different currency, not a direct comparison or proof of a sale.

The historical movement details come from Montre24’s 2013 report on the Pit Lane; the earlier retail and edition reference comes from watchfeed’s 2016 Baselworld account. Neither historical account should be read as current manufacturer confirmation of the calibre or price.

What the price buys—and what it does not establish

At a listed starting price of CHF 210,000, the disclosed proposition is a precious-metal case, a conspicuously open-worked design, a visible tourbillon and a very small stated edition. The product pages identify white gold and rose gold, but do not provide a basis for attributing independently verified timing performance, enhanced accuracy, or a particular service experience to the price. A tourbillon is a visible complication; its presence alone does not prove that this watch keeps better time than a watch without one.

The current price is a listing, not evidence of a completed transaction or a stable market value. The approximately US$200,000 figure reported by watchfeed in 2016 is dated historical retail information, not a current conversion or a comparable sale.

Rarity, brand context and resale

The official pages specify a 10-piece edition, and watchfeed reported the same edition size in 2016. Cecil Purnell’s homepage says the brand typically produces up to fifty pieces annually; that is a brand-wide production statement, not the Pit Lane’s edition count. The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie dates Purnell’s creation to 2006 and notes its 2019 presentation of the Spherion triple-axis tourbillon, whose three cages rotate in 8, 16 and 30 seconds. Those cage times describe the Spherion, not the Pit Lane.

  • Genuine Offset Flying Tourbillon, 40H Power Reserve: 9 o'clock visible tourbillon, Caliber 8001 manual wind, no battery, NOT automatic, accuracy-tested 15+ days. Asymmetric layout breaks the traditional 6 o'clock convention — a distinctive gift for enthusiasts of geometric design and offset tourbillon mechanics.
  • Dodecagonal 12-Sided 316L Steel Case: 42mm twelve-facet case with brushed + polished finishes, higher machining complexity than a round case, catching light from every angle. Slim profile fits daily wear; architectural wrist presence that stands apart from conventional designs.
  • Full Skeleton Dial + Luminous Hands: exposed gear train with black striped bridges, golden gears and jewels; light-charged luminous coating for clear reading in the dark. Industrial mechanical beauty on the wrist, day and night.
  • Sapphire Crystal Front & Back (Mohs 9): scratch-resistant sapphire on both sides, second only to diamond; integrated 316L steel bracelet with solid 3-link construction and butterfly clasp for secure daily wear.
  • 5ATM (50M) Splash Protection Only: safe for rain, splashes and hand washing — NOT for swimming, showering or diving; rinse after saltwater; wind daily. 3-year movement warranty; gift-ready for dad, husband or boyfriend.

Phillips has auction records for other Cecil Purnell watches, including Spherion examples, but those records do not establish a Pit Lane auction result, resale price or performance. Rarity on paper is not a substitute for a model-specific transaction history.

The current product pages and historical articles cited above do not document Pit Lane-specific service costs or service terms. Obtain those details in writing before committing.

Verdict

The Pit Lane is best understood as a rare, high-priced mechanical showpiece for someone drawn to exposed movement architecture, racing-inspired styling and a prominent tourbillon. Its strongest documented case is visual and material, not a demonstrated advantage in timekeeping or day-to-day practicality. The current manufacturer pages establish the two precious-metal variants, dimensions, water resistance, edition size and starting price; the older movement figures remain historical reporting rather than current confirmation.
