The CIGA Design Blue Planet II Atlantic turns a rotating engraved globe into its minute display: one compass-style hand points to an inner minute scale and an outer hour scale. It is an unusually distinctive automatic watch, but its 46 mm-wide, 17.05 mm-thick case and 3 ATM water resistance make it a better fit for land-based wear than swimming or diving. Published launch prices were US$1,199 for stainless steel and US$1,399 for recycled titanium; check the selected variant’s current regional price before buying.
How does the CIGA Blue Planet II tell time?
There is one compass-style hand, not separate conventional hour and minute hands. Read its arrow against two scales: the outer ring gives the hour, while the inner ring gives the minutes. The globe and minute display rotate beneath the hand; the hour ring stays stationary. Once you know which scale to use, the display is read from the arrow’s position against both rings.
CIGA says the hour hand moves through a 30° arc while the minute dial completes a 390° rotation. That unusual motion is central to the design rather than a conventional hand-and-dial arrangement. It gives the watch its distinctive look, but requires more interpretation than a standard analog display, particularly for someone glancing at it for the first time.
What makes the Atlantic edition different?
The Atlantic edition’s engraved map is oriented around the Atlantic-facing geography, including North America, South America, and Europe. CIGA describes engraving that features the Rocky Mountains, Andes, Gulf of Mexico, and Mediterranean. Fratello places it within the Blue Planet II family and says its case is nearly identical to the Pacific version.
#1 Best Overall
- A Masterpiece of Art: Earth, our only blue sanctuary, has been made fragile by human actions. Inspired by the urgent need to protect our planet, the CIGA Design Blue Planet collection was created to embody this message. It urges everyone to listen to Earth’s pulse and protect our shared home.
- Challenge Watch Prize Winner of 2021 GPHG - Grand Prixd'Horlogerie de Genève, acclaimed as the watch industry "Oscars", an annual competition involving several hundreds of watches marketed during the year and attributing the highest awards in this domain, contributes to enhancing the traditions, skills and values of Swiss – and indeed universal – watchmaking culture.
- Self-developed automatic calibre integrated with 30 jewels. With a power reserve of 40 hours and a movement frequency of 28800 times/hour.
- CIGA Design Asynchronous-Follow Movement Technology: Revolutionizing traditional movement gear ratios, this innovative mechanism features a stationary hour dial paired with a dynamic minute dial on the same plane. In this unique configuration, the hour hand moves through a 30° arc while the minute hand completes a 390° rotation, allowing time to be indicated from a single reference point.
- A Minimalist Presentation - Booklet packaging and page-turning design fulfill the curiosity of every time-explorer, entirely made of eco-friendly premium book paper. The sporty yet stylish FKM strap (commonly called fluoro-rubber) naturally complements the dial and can be dressed up or dressed down.
The globe is more than a printed background: CIGA says the dial is CNC-engraved and describes four dial-making processes taking 68 hours. Those are manufacturer production claims, not independently audited figures. The broader Blue Planet lineage was shortlisted for the GPHG Challenge Watch Prize in 2019 and won the Challenge Watch Prize at the 19th GPHG in 2021. That recognition belongs to the original Blue Planet, not specifically to the Atlantic edition.
How large is it, and is it practical for everyday wear?
CIGA lists the case as 46 mm in diameter excluding the crown and 17.05 mm thick. Its official specifications also give a 220 mm watch length, a 22 mm fluororubber strap, sapphire glass, and a stainless-steel or recycled-titanium case. Fratello describes a lugless case, curved sapphire crystal, display caseback, blue fluororubber strap, and matching-material butterfly clasp.

The diameter and thickness suggest a prominent presence on the wrist, but actual fit depends on the wearer; no hands-on fit assessment is available here. The lugless construction may affect how the watch sits compared with a conventional lugged case, but it does not make the overall dimensions small.
Is the CIGA Blue Planet II Atlantic waterproof?
CIGA rates the case at 3 ATM, and Fratello reports the equivalent 30 m rating. Fratello advises keeping the watch on land. This is not a suitable choice for someone seeking a watch for swimming or diving. The fluororubber strap should not be confused with the water resistance of the watch case.

What movement and timekeeping figures are published?
CIGA identifies the automatic movement as its self-developed CD-04-E. Fratello describes it as custom-designed and Swiss-made, with 21 jewels. Both sources report a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour and a 40-hour power reserve. CIGA publishes an accuracy specification of -15/+30 seconds per day; that is the manufacturer’s stated range, not a result from an independent timing test.
These published figures describe the movement’s stated specification, but the available information does not establish independent timekeeping performance or comparative service costs. Buyers who prioritize conventional legibility or documented measured accuracy should weigh those needs against the appeal of the rotating globe display.

Verdict: who should consider the Blue Planet II Atlantic?
The Atlantic makes the most sense for someone who values an unconventional mechanical display and an engraved, geographically specific globe more than instant, conventional readability or compact dimensions. The movement specifications are clearly published, but no independent timing or durability testing is established here. Its case size and limited water rating narrow its practical use: it is a statement watch for land-based wear, not an all-purpose sports watch.
