The CIGA design Time Cipher is an automatic wandering-hours watch: a moving assembly travels around the dial to indicate minutes, while a rotating hour disc shows the hour against a fixed marker. It keeps a familiar minute pointer but makes reading the hour a matter of alignment. Its 45 mm case, unusual display and published specifications are worth weighing against your wrist size and legibility preferences.
How the Time Cipher tells time
The Time Cipher’s central assembly moves around a raised minute scale. That moving assembly acts as the minute indicator, while an hour disc rotates along its path. Read the hour where the disc aligns with a fixed marker. The result is a wandering-hours display: the hour indication changes position over time instead of staying in a conventional fixed window, while the moving pointer still gives a recognizable way to track minutes. Fratello describes the hour disc as travelling counterclockwise.
CIGA design’s official product copy describes the concept as time being “not announced, but deciphered—through motion, alignment, and attention.” In practical terms, expect to learn a different visual sequence than on a standard three-hand watch. Fratello’s reviewer said the display felt natural after about three looks; that is one person’s experience, not a guarantee that every wearer will read it as quickly.
Movement and published performance
The automatic CD-08 movement is described by CIGA design as self-developed and based on the Miyota 9000 series; Time+Tide also identifies the 9000 series. Fratello specifies a Miyota 9015 base modified for the wandering-hours mechanism. The sources therefore agree on the Miyota family, while Fratello gives a more specific base-calibre identification.

Will the size and display suit you?
At 45 mm in diameter, the Time Cipher is a large watch by case measurement. Fratello’s reviewer said it was not suited to small wrists, but that is an individual assessment rather than a universal fit test. If possible, try it on: wrist shape, strap position and personal preference all affect how a large case wears.
- Consider it if: you want an unconventional mechanical display and enjoy reading time by following a moving indicator and alignment.
- Try it carefully if: you have a small wrist, prefer compact watches, or need to read the time instantly at a glance. The 45 mm case and sequential display may be a poor match.
- Check before replacing the strap: the case is lugless, and the cited sources do not establish that ordinary 22 mm straps are compatible. Confirm model-specific fit rather than relying on width alone.
Price and purchase terms
The CIGA design official product page reviewed for the Netherlands market lists the Time Cipher at US$1,129. That is a market-specific listing, and local price, taxes and availability can vary. Time+Tide’s January 2026 article and Fratello’s launch coverage reported US$899; treat that as launch-era article pricing, not as a current worldwide quote.
