The CIGA Design Time Cipher is an automatic wandering-hour watch: a rotating disc carries the hour numeral while an openworked arm sweeps around a minute scale. It looks unlike a conventional watch, but the display has a simple logic once you know where to look. Its large, lugless case and integrated strap make fit a more important question than its relatively slim profile suggests.
How do you read the Time Cipher?
Rather than using separate hour and minute hands, the Time Cipher pairs a moving hour disc with a minute arm. CIGA says the assembly sweeps 360 degrees each hour: the skeletonized arm traces the minutes around the dial’s perimeter, and the disc rotates to show the current hour against a fixed marker. Fratello’s hands-on account likewise describes the arrow-like indicator as the minute display and the rotating disc as the hour display. CIGA Design’s product listing and Fratello’s hands-on article explain the arrangement.
Reading it at a glance
- Find the hour numeral on the rotating disc, aligned with the fixed marker.
- Read the position of the arm against the raised minute markers around the dial to determine the minutes.
The disc turns counterclockwise. Fratello author Jorg Weppelink noted that its direction took a few looks to feel natural; that is one reviewer’s experience, not a guarantee that every wearer will find the display difficult. Fratello labels the article a partnership post.
What makes the dial unusual?
CIGA describes the dial as “Super Black,” with raised minute markers, a skeletonized minute arm and dark-green Swiss Super-LumiNova on the display. The high-contrast effect is part of the watch’s appeal: the moving assembly stands out against the dark dial. CIGA claims the dial absorbs 99.4% of light; that figure is a manufacturer claim, not an independently established measurement in the sources cited here. In Fratello’s hands-on account, the example’s green lume made the hour and minute indications legible in darkness.

How large is the case, and how might it wear?
The published diameter is inconsistent. CIGA’s specification block lists 44.0 mm, while its product narrative and Fratello give 45 mm. Fratello additionally lists a 45 mm length. CIGA describes the profile as 11.8 mm thick, a figure also reported by Fratello. The official specification block also gives “48.0*40.8 mm” as a size, without resolving how those dimensions relate to its stated diameter.
Those numbers do not guarantee a particular fit. Fratello’s writer said the rounded 45 mm case felt less bulky than expected, while cautioning that it was not suited to small wrists. The case is lugless, so conventional lug-to-lug measurements are not supplied in the same way as for many watches. If possible, try it on or compare its actual footprint with a watch you already find comfortable.

Case, crystal and strap
CIGA lists a 316L stainless-steel case, domed sapphire crystal and black fluororubber strap with a hidden steel clasp. Fratello reports a 22/20 mm strap and quick-release spring bars, and describes the strap as supple and comfortable during its short hands-on period. Because the strap integrates into the lugless case, confirm the attachment and dimensions before looking for a replacement; compatibility with a generic strap is not established by these specifications.
What movement does it use?
The automatic movement is called the CD-08. CIGA says it is built on customized Miyota 9000-series architecture, while Fratello identifies a Miyota 9015 base reworked for the wandering-hour mechanism. The sources agree on a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and 24 jewels, but do not give a consistent power-reserve figure: CIGA’s specification panel says 40 hours, its product narrative says 42, and Fratello reports 42 hours. The exact base-caliber description and reserve should therefore be confirmed with CIGA for the specific production version.

Water resistance, price and purchase checks
CIGA rates the watch at 5 ATM; Fratello expresses the same rating as 50 meters (5 ATM). That rating alone does not establish a specific swimming or diving recommendation, so consult the current manufacturer instructions for intended water use.
The official listing showed US$899 when retrieved, and Fratello’s article also stated US$899. These are source-time prices, not a guarantee of today’s price or availability. Check the current listing for your market, stock, shipping, taxes, warranty and return terms. CIGA’s opened listing stated a 15-day return window and said buyers returning a watch without a quality issue were responsible for freight, customs duties and related costs; verify the terms on the listing for your region before purchase. Who is the Time Cipher for?
The Time Cipher makes sense for someone drawn to an unconventional mechanical display and comfortable wearing a visually assertive watch. Its wandering-hour layout is readable once learned, but it is not the familiar glance-reading experience of a standard dial. The published size discrepancies and large, lugless form make trying it on especially useful; the movement’s reserve and base-caliber descriptions are also worth clarifying if those details matter to your decision.
