Citizen Automatic Watches vs Seiko 5: Movements, Sizing, and Value

Citizen and Seiko 5 differ by reference, not just brand. Compare movement features, dimensions, materials, and the price and warranty details that determine value.

There is no single Citizen-versus-Seiko 5 winner: the answer changes with the exact reference. A useful comparison is Citizen’s 42 mm Sport Automatic NH7531-50E against Seiko’s 38 mm Seiko 5 Sports SRPK31. Their published power reserves are nearly identical, but their case sizes, crystals, water-resistance ratings, and movement features differ. For a smaller Citizen, the 40 mm and 37 mm TSUYOSA models offer useful alternatives.

Which Citizen and Seiko 5 models are being compared?

“Citizen automatic” and “Seiko 5” each cover multiple models, so brand-level claims can hide important differences. The specifications below apply only to the four cited references—not every automatic watch from either brand.

Reference Movement and winding Published power reserve Functions and other specifications
Citizen Sport Automatic NH7531-50E Caliber 8200, automatic 42 hours Day/date, hacking, sapphire crystal, 100 m water resistance
Seiko 5 Sports SRPK31 Caliber 4R36, automatic with manual winding Approximately 41 hours Stop-second-hand function, day/date, Hardlex crystal, 10 bar water resistance
Citizen TSUYOSA NJ0151-53M Caliber 8210, automatic 42 hours Date, hacking, sapphire crystal, 50 m water resistance
Citizen TSUYOSA NJ0200-50X Caliber 8210, automatic 42 hours Date, hacking, sapphire crystal, 50 m water resistance

The figures are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent measurements. Citizen’s cited NH7531-50E listing gives a 42-hour reserve; Seiko’s SRPK31 listing says approximately 41 hours. That small difference does not establish which watch keeps better time or has a more dependable movement.

How do the movements and features compare?

Winding and time-setting

The SRPK31’s 4R36 is explicitly listed as automatic with manual winding, and Seiko specifies a stop-second-hand function. Citizen lists hacking for the NH7531-50E and both TSUYOSA examples. Hacking stops the seconds hand while setting the time, making it easier to synchronize the watch precisely. The listed NH7531-50E has a day/date display, while the TSUYOSA references list a date display.

Crystal and water resistance

These particular references differ in materials and ratings: the NH7531-50E lists sapphire and 100 m water resistance, while the SRPK31 lists Hardlex and 10 bar. The two cited TSUYOSA models list sapphire and 50 m water resistance. These are specifications for the named watches, not rules that apply to every Citizen or Seiko 5. Water-resistance ratings also should not be read as a guarantee that a watch is suitable for every activity; follow the manufacturer’s guidance for the exact model.

What the specifications do not establish

The listings do not provide matched accuracy tests, long-term reliability evidence, or comparative service-cost data. A caliber name or reserve figure alone cannot settle those questions.

Which one is likely to fit better?

Reference Case width or diameter Lug-to-lug Thickness Lug width as listed
Citizen NH7531-50E 42 mm case width Not stated on the Citizen product page Not stated in the cited specifications 22 mm
Seiko 5 Sports SRPK31 38 mm diameter 44.2 mm 12.1 mm 20 mm
Citizen TSUYOSA NJ0151-53M 40 mm case width Not stated in the cited specifications Not stated in the cited specifications 9.1 mm, as labeled on the Citizen listing
Citizen TSUYOSA NJ0200-50X 37 mm case width Not stated in the cited specifications Not stated in the cited specifications 9 mm, as labeled on the Citizen listing

The product pages do not state the publication year for these dimensions. Citizen’s TSUYOSA listings label unusually small figures as “lug width”; confirm what that measurement refers to before relying on it for strap compatibility.

Use more than diameter to judge fit

Diameter is only one part of how a watch wears. Lug-to-lug length affects how far it spans across the wrist; thickness, bezel and dial proportions, bracelet shape and taper, and wrist shape also influence its presence. The available figures make the SRPK31 easier to compare on lug-to-lug and thickness, but the cited NH7531-50E listing does not give its lug-to-lug measurement.

When possible, try on the exact reference. Otherwise, compare its published dimensions with a watch you already wear comfortably, paying particular attention to lug-to-lug length and thickness rather than assuming a diameter will fit based on wrist circumference alone.

How should you judge value?

The cited product listings do not provide a matched, current street-price comparison, and they do not establish ownership costs. A value verdict therefore depends on the prices and terms available to you, not just the brand or movement.

  • Weigh the features you will actually use: size, date or day/date display, crystal, water-resistance rating, and winding or setting functions.
  • Confirm that the listed dimensions match the exact reference and configuration being offered.

For a larger case and the cited 100 m rating, the NH7531-50E presents a different feature set from the more compact SRPK31. The TSUYOSA models provide 40 mm and 37 mm Citizen options, but their 50 m rating and date-only display differ from the NH7531-50E. Whether any is better value depends on the local offer and which trade-offs matter to you.
