Citizen’s US product page records its launch on August 10, 2017, and lists Eco-Drive power, an altimeter, a compass and a date. The original syndicated hands-on excerpt calls the redesign a more mainstream reinterpretation of the previous generation; that is the reviewer’s characterization, not Citizen’s stated positioning.
Which Altichron was updated for 2017?
The watch in the syndicated hands-on title is the Citizen Promaster Altichron BN5058-07E. Citizen’s US product page independently confirms that reference and gives its launch date as August 10, 2017: Citizen BN5058-07E product page.
Model references matter here: Citizen’s separate 2017 global announcement covers the BN4044-15E, another Altichron, rather than the BN5058-07E. Its movement, measurements, water resistance, price and metric altitude range should not be treated as specifications for the BN5058-07E.
What does the BN5058-07E do?
Citizen lists the BN5058-07E as Eco-Drive powered and equipped with an analog altimeter, compass and date. The US product page states an altitude range of 1,000 to 32,000 feet. That is the model-specific range documented for this reference; it should not be replaced with the metric range Citizen publishes for the BN4044-15E.

The Altichron’s basic appeal is combining outdoor information with a conventional time display. In its Hong Kong announcement, Citizen says the analog layout lets wearers view information without leaving the time display. Citizen’s design description says it refined the colors and shapes of hands and printing to make two kinds of information easier to read together: Citizen Promaster design description.
What changed in the 2017 design?
The available excerpt from the original aBlogtoWatch hands-on article, attributed to Ariel Adams, describes the BN5058-07E as a more mainstream reinterpretation of the prior generation. Citizen’s design page supports a shift toward an analog-first presentation with adjusted hand and print treatments.
