The NY0040-17L’s listed crown position is a distinctive visual and practical detail for readers who specifically want an 8 o’clock crown. The NY0120-01E is one millimeter smaller in listed diameter, but its listed thickness is greater than the NY0040-09W’s; those measurements come from different regional references and should not be treated as a perfectly controlled comparison. A bracelet, dial color or calendar layout should likewise be checked against the precise reference being offered.

NY0040-09W
Citizen Spain’s NY0040-09W listing identifies Cal. 8204, a 42 mm by 12.5 mm case, full-lume dial, polyurethane strap, mineral crystal with anti-reflective treatment, ISO 6425 designation and 20 bar resistance. Its listed reserve is 42 hours. These are specifications for the -09W regional reference, not a guarantee that every NY0040 has the same dial, crystal treatment or movement details. What the NY0120 family offers
NY0120-01E
Citizen Spain lists the NY0120-01E with Cal. 8204, 41 mm diameter, 13.7 mm thickness, mineral crystal, unidirectional bezel, rubber strap, date/calendar, ISO 6425 certification and 20 bar water resistance. The same listing gives a 42-hour power reserve and an accuracy range of -20/+40 seconds per day. These figures describe that regional listing, not all watches in the NY0120 family. Other NY012 references
Citizen Philippines’ August 2023 launch announcement names NY0120-01E, NY0129-07L, NY0121-09X, NY0120-01X and NY0120-01Z. It describes the series as using Cal. 8204, with 41 mm cases, day/date, rotating bezels, mineral crystals, lume and 200 m water resistance, and gives an approximate 40-hour reserve. The announcement says availability and specifications may vary by market; its approximate reserve differs from the 42 hours listed for the Spanish NY0120-01E. Does “Challenge Diver” mean these are the same watch?
No. Citizen’s Philippines announcement says the NY012 series was inspired by the brand’s diver watches of the 1970s and 1980s. The affordable NY0040 and NY0120 are Promaster automatic diver families; “Challenge Diver” is useful heritage context, not a name that should be applied literally to every variant.

For a more direct, premium heritage reinterpretation, Citizen positions the Fujitsubo NB6021 as inspired by its 1977 Challenge Diver. Citizen’s US product page tells the story of a watch reportedly found on an Australian beach in 1983 after years underwater, still ticking and covered in barnacles. That is Citizen’s product narrative, not independently established salvage history. The NB6021-17E listing specifies a 41 mm Super Titanium case, sapphire crystal, Cal. 9051 automatic movement, 42-hour reserve, black polyurethane strap and 200 m water resistance. It is a different, higher-tier option—not a substitute for the affordable NY0040/NY0120 models. The US page showed it sold out in the search result; check current stock directly. How to choose and verify a reference
- Decide on fit. The cited NY0120-01E listing gives 41 mm diameter; the cited NY0040 references are 42 mm. Compare thickness as well as diameter where the local listing provides it.
- Choose the design details you want. The NY0040-17L listing specifies an 8 o’clock crown; the NY0040-09W has a full-lume dial; the NY0120-01E has a date/calendar and rubber strap. Confirm each feature against the full reference, not a family-level description.
- Check the local specification page. Look for the exact reference, movement, reserve, crystal, calendar, band, water resistance and ISO 6425 wording. Regional pages do not establish that every market has identical specifications or stock.
- Check the local price and availability. Citizen Italy’s NY0040-17L listing showed €258 and Citizen Spain’s NY0120-01E listing showed €268 when accessed 2026-10-08. Those are dated regional listing examples; they do not establish a current price in another country.
What ISO 6425 and 20 bar tell you
The cited Citizen pages describe these particular references as ISO 6425 professional divers and list 20 bar water resistance. Use the certification and depth rating attached to the exact reference rather than assuming every watch with a similar family name has identical specifications. For care and use, follow the watch’s manual and the local manufacturer guidance; a stated water-resistance rating is not a recommendation to operate the crown underwater.
