Founder Claudio D’Amore described that approach in a 2021 interview as a choice to explain the company’s decisions and let people judge for themselves. That is a record of the brand’s stated philosophy, not evidence of an independent audit.
What CODE41 meant by transparency
D’Amore told Time+Tide that when he started the business in 2016, he wanted to explain the reasons behind the company’s choices: “Okay, let’s be transparent. I will explain why we make all of our choices and maybe people will understand and will like it.” The December 2021 interview describes CODE41 sharing component costs and origins, down to small parts such as clasps and casebacks.

The company’s own January 2022 retrospective frames its mission, dating to 2016, as making fine watchmaking more accessible by removing intermediaries, explaining development and production costs, and using a low markup. This is CODE41’s account of its business model; the sources do not establish that the figures or disclosures were independently verified.
How CODE41 said it priced and sold its watches
In the 2021 interview, D’Amore said, “We have a mark-up of 2.3 or 2.5 sometimes.” That was his description of the pricing structure in some cases, not a universal rate or an independently checked margin calculation. The interview also says CODE41 sold watches online direct to customers to avoid distributor and retailer markups.

The practical distinction is that CODE41 presented cost and origin information as a way for customers to assess its pricing, rather than relying only on conventional luxury-watch marketing. The available accounts describe the company’s approach at that time; they do not establish today’s prices, margins, sales channels or disclosure practices.
Customers had a role in product development
CODE41’s community story included specific opportunities to provide input, not just a general invitation to follow the brand. For the X41 case, the 2021 interview says the company presented three lug designs—clean, hollow and faceted—and invited consumers to register a preference.
In its 2022 retrospective, CODE41 also described community participation in developing the NB24 Creator Edition and requests for feedback on the finish of Mecascape. Those examples show how the brand connected participation with particular products; they do not establish that customers controlled the final design decisions.
Mechanical design was its own strand of the story
D’Amore’s interest in watch mechanics helps explain CODE41’s visual identity, but the interview does not present skeletonization as a consequence of its transparency policy. He said he wanted to see the “motor” and moving parts; that enthusiasm informed the X41’s movement and its exposed-mechanics design.

The interview also described Mecascape—short for “mechanical landscape”—as a large, flat display of mechanical components, with aspects of a desktop clock, pocket watch and art object. D’Amore gave an estimate of CHF 6,000–8,000 in that 2021 interview. It was an interview-era estimate, not a verified final price or a current listing.

The available figures offer a snapshot of CODE41’s scale and activity around 2021, not current company totals. Time+Tide reported in December 2021 that the team had 25 people and the community more than 500,000 members. In its January 2022 retrospective, CODE41 reported 25 individuals and 530,000 registered members, with membership rising by 132,000 during 2021.
That retrospective also reported that 1,601 NB24 Creator Edition and Edition 2 pieces were sold, and that watches were delivered to 42 countries in 2021. These are historical figures reported by CODE41; neither source supplies a current equivalent.
What this profile can—and cannot—tell a prospective buyer
CODE41’s retrospective lists NB24, ANOMALY Evolution, X41 and DAY41 among its 2021 launches or available projects. It also says the R41 rubber strap came in six colors and was compatible with all CODE41 collections at the time. That is a historical company statement, not confirmation of present availability or fit for a particular watch. Check model-specific compatibility and current stock before buying.
