That restraint comes with a real trade-off: you wind it by hand, and a watch from around 1974 needs its own condition and water resistance checked rather than assumed.
What the Rolex 6694 is—and what “circa 1974” means
The reference 6694 is a stainless-steel, manual-wind Rolex Oysterdate Precision with a date display. “Precision” matters: Sotheby’s describes the model as not chronometer-certified, so it should not be confused with Rolex models carrying chronometer certification.

Second Vintage documents examples spanning 1963 through 1982, a reported range rather than a verified production ledger for every serial number. A circa-1973 example at Sotheby’s and a catalog extract describing a circa-1974 watch offer context, but neither establishes the exact production year of any particular 6694. Treat “circa 1974” as an approximate identification and verify the individual watch’s details and documentation.

What ownership feels like: winding, date, and size
Manual winding is part of the routine
The 6694 is hand-wound, not automatic. You need to wind it regularly to keep it running; a seller’s claim that a watch runs does not establish its accuracy, power reserve, or future reliability. Pay attention to how the crown and stem feel, and ask a watchmaker to assess them if winding feels rough, loose, or inconsistent.
Expect a compact watch, but measure the actual example
Published measurements vary: Second Vintage records 34 mm and 36 mm examples, while Sotheby’s lists its circa-1973 watch at 35 mm. These figures are not a guarantee of the dimensions of a particular watch. Check the case measurements of the exact example and, if possible, try it on; fit depends on more than the diameter alone.

Movement details need individual verification
Second Vintage documents caliber 1225 with 17 jewels for one 1982 example. That does not establish that every 6694, including one identified as circa 1974, has that caliber or jewel count. Ask for a qualified watchmaker to inspect the movement rather than treating a model-level description as proof of what is inside a specific watch.

Choosing a dial and judging originality
Documented 6694 configurations include black dials with gilt-tone text and blue sunburst dials with applied gold-tone indices. Color alone is a weak basis for choosing between them. Look for a dial, hands, and luminous material that form a coherent configuration, and ask whether the dial is original to the watch or a factory service replacement. A replacement may be legitimate, but it is not the same claim as an untouched original dial.

- Check that printing, finish, indices, and date display look consistent with the claimed configuration.
- Compare the hands and lume for a coherent appearance; mismatches deserve an explanation, not an assumption that they are harmless or proof of a fake.
- Ask for clear photographs and documentation, then have a specialist inspect the dial and hands in person if originality matters to your decision.
How to assess a used 6694 before buying
Evaluate the exact watch, not just the reference number or the word “running.” A useful inspection connects the visible condition, internal components, service history, and seller’s terms.
- Establish what is being represented. Ask for the serial and case details, the seller’s basis for the circa-1974 date, and any available papers or provenance. Documentation can support a claim, but it does not replace inspection.
- Inspect the case. Look at lug shape and the transitions between surfaces. Rounded edges or softened lines can indicate heavy polishing. Ask whether the case has been polished and whether any work is documented.
- Have the watch opened by a qualified specialist. Request inspection of the movement and case details, and ask whether the movement is appropriate to the watch. A matching movement identification by itself does not prove that the case, dial, and movement originally belonged together.
- Ask for service specifics. Find out what was done, when, by whom, and whether parts were replaced. “Serviced” without details is not enough to establish current condition.
- Check the winding mechanism and operation. The crown and stem should be assessed, and the watch should be evaluated for timekeeping and power reserve. A listing that says it was running at cataloging is not a performance test.
- Review the transaction terms. Understand the seller’s return policy and what, if anything, is guaranteed about authenticity or condition. Compare those terms alongside originality, case condition, service records, provenance, and fit.
Sotheby’s circa-1973 listing illustrates why the condition report matters: its particular watch was described as heavily worn and needing restoration. Although it was running when cataloged, accuracy and power-reserve duration had not been tested. That is evidence about that auction example, not a blanket description of all 6694s.

Water resistance and servicing: do not rely on the Oyster name
Do not assume a vintage 6694 is safe for swimming or other water exposure because it has an Oyster case. Its present water resistance is unknown unless the individual watch has been tested, and a test is only meaningful for its condition at that time. Seek a current test and follow the inspecting watchmaker’s advice before exposing it to water.

Is the 6694 the right kind of Rolex entry?
The 6694 suits someone who values a restrained vintage Oyster design and accepts the involvement of daily watch ownership: manual winding, careful vetting, and uncertainty that only an inspection of the individual watch can reduce. Its appeal is not that it removes the risks of buying vintage, but that it pairs a familiar Rolex case and date with a more hands-on routine.
There is no defensible current fair-price range established here. Asking prices and auction results for individual watches should not be treated as a valuation without accounting for originality, condition, service, provenance, and seller terms.
