A watch movement—also called a caliber—is the mechanism that keeps time and drives the display. The main choice is between mechanical movements, which use a wound mainspring, and quartz movements, which use an electrical supply and a quartz oscillator. Automatic and manual-wind watches are both mechanical; solar and radio-controlled watches are types of quartz, while Spring Drive combines a mainspring with electronic regulation. Which suits you depends on the particular watch and the routine, accuracy, design, and servicing you prefer.
What does a watch movement do?
The movement stores or receives energy, regulates timekeeping, and transfers power to the hands or display. Its design determines how the watch is wound or charged, how it behaves when left unworn, and what maintenance it may need. The name of a movement family is a useful starting point, but performance and service requirements depend on the specific caliber.

How do mechanical watches work?
In a mechanical watch, winding tightens a mainspring inside a barrel. As it unwinds, gears carry energy to an escapement, which releases it in controlled intervals and sustains the balance wheel’s oscillation. That regulated motion drives the display. Mechanical watches do not need a battery, and their many interacting parts can be cleaned, adjusted, or repaired when parts and suitable expertise are available.
Manual-wind: winding is part of the routine
Turning the crown winds the mainspring. Manual-wind movements are generally thinner than comparable automatics because they do not need a rotor and its winding system. WatchTime says a manual watch is usually wound once a day, but the right cadence depends on the watch’s power reserve and its instructions. Stop if the crown meets clear resistance; forcing it can damage or break the mainspring.

Automatic: wrist motion helps wind the spring
An automatic is a mechanical watch with a rotor. Wrist motion turns the rotor, and a gear train transfers that energy to the mainspring. Many automatic watches can also be wound at the crown, which may help restart a stopped watch, but follow the model’s instructions. Wearing one does not guarantee it will stay fully wound: the amount of motion and the movement’s power reserve both matter. A watch winder is optional, not a requirement for every automatic.
How does a quartz watch work?
A quartz movement uses an electrical source to power a quartz crystal oscillator. WatchTime’s September 26, 2026 article says a typical quartz crystal oscillates at 32,768 Hz; an integrated circuit derives a timing signal from that frequency and a motor drives the gear train and hands. Quartz watches are generally more accurate and easier to maintain than mechanical watches, but exact performance varies by caliber. Some basic quartz movements are replaced as units rather than repaired, while higher-end examples may include temperature compensation, refined finishing, and long-term serviceability.

Quartz movements can drive either analog or digital displays. A seconds hand that ticks once per second can be a clue to quartz, but the hand’s motion alone is not a definitive way to identify every movement design.

Solar quartz
A solar watch is a quartz watch whose energy storage is charged by light captured by a solar cell beneath or integrated with the dial. It can reduce the need for regular battery changes, but its rechargeable storage cell can age and eventually require replacement.

Radio-controlled quartz
A radio-controlled watch adds a receiver that can take a time signal and correct the time; it may also update the date or daylight-saving setting. Reception depends on signal availability. When it cannot receive a signal, the watch continues to run as a conventional quartz watch.
What are Kinetic and Spring Drive?
Kinetic: motion generates electricity
Seiko Kinetic uses a motion-driven mechanism similar in principle to an automatic winding system to generate voltage for a capacitor or rechargeable lithium cell, according to American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute training material. That describes how it generates electricity; it does not mean a mainspring mechanically drives the hands. Storage and care instructions vary by model, so consult its manual.

Spring Drive: mainspring power with electronic regulation
Spring Drive is a distinct hybrid, not an ordinary battery-powered quartz watch. Seiko says it runs on a mainspring, while a quartz oscillator and electronic regulation control the rate in place of a conventional escapement. A glide wheel generates the small amount of electricity needed by the oscillator and circuit, and electromagnetic braking regulates its speed. The seconds hand moves continuously rather than in discrete ticks.
Seiko’s official FAQ states one-second-a-day accuracy for Spring Drive; that is the manufacturer’s stated specification, not an independent comparison across watches. Seiko’s technical explainer gives a 72-hour power reserve for the Spring Drive chronograph described there, including with the chronograph running. Its figures of 416 parts, 50 jewels, 140 oil points, and five lubricants also refer to that specific chronograph, not every Spring Drive caliber.

How should you compare movements?
| What to compare | Question to ask | What the movement family tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Accuracy | How much rate variation is acceptable for this watch? | Quartz is generally more accurate than mechanical, but compare the exact caliber’s published specification. Mechanical rate can be affected by position, shocks, magnetism, and mainspring tension. |
| Winding or charging | Do you want to wind by hand, rely partly on wrist motion, or use light or an electrical supply? | Manual-wind asks for regular crown winding; an automatic uses wrist motion to help wind. Solar quartz charges its energy storage with light. |
| Power reserve | How long will this watch run when unworn or uncharged? | Compare the model’s stated reserve rather than assuming a category-wide figure; reserve varies by movement. |
| Maintenance | What battery, rechargeable cell, seal, lubrication, or movement service does this model need? | Use the maker’s guidance for the specific watch rather than assuming a universal service interval. |
| Serviceability | Can a qualified independent watchmaker get the parts and technical information? | Supplier calibers may be easier to service where parts and documentation are accessible. Proprietary calibers may require brand service. |
| Design and feel | Do thickness, seconds-hand motion, sound, or visible mechanics matter to you? | Manual-wind movements may be thinner than comparable automatics. Mechanical designs have visible mechanical action; Spring Drive has continuous seconds-hand motion. |
| Caliber provenance | What does “in-house” or “manufacture” mean for this model? | Ask who designed and makes key components, who assembles and regulates the caliber, and whether it is exclusive. The label has fluid boundaries and does not by itself establish superior accuracy or reliability. |
Which movement is right for you?
- Choose manual-wind if you value a thinner mechanical design and enjoy winding as part of wearing the watch.
- Consider automatic if you want a mechanical watch that can use wrist motion to help maintain its mainspring’s charge, and you are comfortable with model-specific winding and reserve needs.
- Consider quartz if you prioritize generally higher accuracy and a simpler routine over the mechanical winding experience.
- Consider solar quartz if charging from light suits your habits and you want to reduce regular battery changes.
- Consider radio-controlled quartz if time-signal reception is useful where you live or travel, while recognizing that correction depends on reception.
- Consider a hybrid if its specific combination of energy source and regulation appeals to you; Kinetic and Spring Drive work differently, so assess the individual caliber rather than treating hybrids as one category.
What care and service should you expect?
Follow the watch’s own user guide: winding, battery or cell replacement, water resistance, and service needs are model-specific. Patek Philippe recommends an eight-to-ten-year service interval for its quartz and manually wound or self-winding mechanical watches; that is the brand’s guidance, not a universal interval. It also says quartz battery life is two to three years, with actual life affected by model and usage.
Patek Philippe’s care guidance advises returning crowns and pushers to their correct positions and avoiding shocks, prolonged vibration, extreme temperature changes, and magnetic fields. It advises taking an exposed watch to an official service center or authorized retailer for demagnetization, and not operating controls underwater or while the watch is wet. Follow the instructions for your own watch and use a qualified service channel for work on its movement or rechargeable cell.
