Its compact case, simple high-contrast dial and fixed bars give it a distinct period character; the Sellita movement, modern lume and service-friendly caseback make it a contemporary watch rather than an issued vintage original. Whether that combination is appealing depends chiefly on how you feel about hand winding and limited strap choice.
What the CWC Mellor-72 is—and what it isn’t
The Mellor-72 is CWC’s modern reissue of an early-1970s General Service pattern. CWC traces the company’s founding to Ray Mellor in 1972 and presents the watch as the beginning of its story. The original pattern was associated with British Army W10, Royal Navy 0552 and RAF 6BB issue designations. The current Mellor-72 is not itself a vintage military-issued watch; it is a new watch based on that design. CWC’s history article sets out the background and the differences.
The design keeps a tonneau-shaped case, the pre-1982 CWC logo, broad-arrow and T dial markings, a hand-wound movement and an acrylic crystal. There is a meaningful construction change: the original used a one-piece case with a split crown stem accessed from the front, while the reissue has a two-piece case with a press-on/off caseback. CWC says the newer arrangement makes servicing easier. Super-LumiNova and contemporary materials also distinguish the reissue from its period inspiration. How big does the Mellor-72 wear?
The 38mm headline measurement includes the crown, so it overstates the width across the case itself. Hodinkee describes the case as about 35mm wide excluding the crown and gives the same 42mm end-to-end measurement; Fratello likewise warns readers to account for the crown-inclusive figure. The short 42mm lug-to-lug and compact case are central to the watch’s vintage military proportions, but wrist fit is personal. Hodinkee’s hands-on review and Fratello’s review discuss the dimensions and wearing impression.
Reviewers describe a simple, high-contrast dial that is easy to read. Hodinkee found nighttime legibility less convincing, especially with the relatively slender hands. Fratello praised the dial’s simplicity and the feel of winding the SW210, while noting reflections from the domed acrylic and a cosmetic detail around the lug holes. These are individual hands-on impressions, not controlled comparisons or guarantees of how every wearer will experience the watch.

What strap fits the Mellor-72?
The bars are fixed, so a conventional strap designed to attach to removable spring bars is not a direct fit. Look for a pull-through NATO- or Zulu-style strap that can pass between the bars and behind the case. CWC lists the supplied strap as 18mm, while the bars are specified at 18.5mm; do not assume every aftermarket strap labelled 18mm or 18.5mm will fit neatly. Check the strap maker’s stated compatibility and dimensions before ordering. Both CWC’s listing and the Hodinkee review identify the fixed-bar constraint.
Should you choose the reissue or a vintage issued watch?
Choose by what matters more: a contemporary watch with a known specification and stated warranty, or an original example with period issue provenance. The Mellor-72 reissue has the SW210, Super-LumiNova, a removable caseback and CWC’s stated three-year international warranty. A vintage W10, 0552 or 6BB may offer genuine period history, but condition, originality and mechanical health vary from watch to watch. Before buying a vintage example, assess its provenance, case and dial condition, service history, movement and the availability of suitable service or parts. An issue designation alone does not establish that a particular watch is authentic or sound.

Is the Mellor-72 worth it for you?
The case for the Mellor-72 is specific: restrained military styling, a hand-wound movement, compact proportions and a design connected to CWC’s early history. It makes sense for someone who wants those traits in a newly made reissue and accepts acrylic, fixed bars and daily winding. It is a less natural choice if you want a quick-change strap system or prefer the provenance and individuality of a vintage issued watch.
There is also a contemporary field-watch alternative to consider: Hodinkee compares the CWC with the Hamilton Khaki Pilot Pioneer Mechanical. Compare their dimensions, movement and stated power reserve, water-resistance rating, crystal, strap-bar design and fidelity to the CWC military pattern. The Hamilton price cited in that review reflects its publication period, not a current quote, so check current listings before making a price comparison.
