Why the Dan Henry 1937 looks Art Deco
Dan Henry calls the watch a tribute to “the cosmopolitan Art Deco style of the 1930s when watches such as these were worn by stylish New Yorkers from Rockefeller Center to Wall Street.” The design makes that reference legible through its details rather than relying on the label alone.
- Sector dial and tachymeter: The segmented dial and printed scale give the face a measured, instrument-like structure.
- Applied numerals and leaf-shaped hands: These add period-inspired ornament without abandoning the functional chronograph layout.
- Square pushers: Their shape reinforces the watch’s vintage character.
- Engraved locomotive caseback: A decorative detail on the screw-back case.
Together, those elements position the 1937 as a dress chronograph with an explicitly retro design, rather than a plain modern watch with a stopwatch function.

The 3 ATM marking is a listed rating, not evidence of tested suitability for swimming. The 20 mm lug width is useful when looking for another strap, but confirm the attachment and fit; the listed package includes tan and black leather straps described as easy release.
Choose the exact dial and layout, not just the model name
The current page offers gold, silver, gilt and onyx dial choices, along with date and no-date versions and different subdial orientations. Its silver-dial description specifies gold applied numerals, a tachymeter, gold leaf-shaped hands, blued chronograph hands and silver subdials. It also describes a 60-minute chronograph and a 24-hour indicator.

Those descriptions should not automatically be applied to every configuration. The subdial arrangement and displayed functions can differ, so check the selected listing and the relevant instructions before assuming what each subdial measures. Dan Henry’s instruction manual index is the official place to look for variant guidance.
- Compare the dial color and whether you want a date display.
- Check whether the subdials are arranged horizontally or vertically.
- Confirm the function shown by each subdial and the movement fitted to that exact configuration.
- Consider the 38 mm diameter alongside the 12.7 mm thickness and 46.1 mm lug-to-lug length when judging likely fit.
How the current listing differs from launch-era coverage
Time+Tide’s July 22, 2020 launch coverage described four models, a 39 mm case, a $270 USD recommended retail price, and different movements by layout: VK61 for vertical dials and VK64 for horizontal dials. It described the horizontal subdials as a 60-minute totalizer and 24-hour indicator, and the vertical arrangement as a 60-minute totalizer and running seconds. Those are historical launch details, not universal specifications for every watch currently listed.

By contrast, Dan Henry’s current product page lists a 38 mm case, a $300 USD price and a VK64 movement. The two sources therefore should not be blended into one specification set: use the present product page for its current offer, and verify the chosen configuration and its manual for variant-specific details.
