The Dan Henry 1972 Maverick is a more accessible watch with design cues associated with the Porsche Design Chronograph 1, not a mechanical or feature-for-feature substitute. The current black chronograph is a 41mm quartz watch with day-date; Dan Henry listed it at $380 USD when its product page was accessed. Price and availability can change.
What makes the Dan Henry 1972 a Porsche Design alternative?
The resemblance is principally about appearance. Worn & Wound’s 2018 review identified the Orfina Porsche Design Chronograph I as the 1972’s clear inspiration, pointing to a blocky, hooded-lug case, a 6/9/12 subdial arrangement, tachymeter, and high-contrast dial cues. It also noted changes made by Dan Henry. Read Worn & Wound’s 2018 first look.

That lineage does not make the watches equivalent. The current black Dan Henry chronograph is quartz-powered, has a day-date display, and uses its own case and feature set. If your priority is the black-case-and-bracelet look, white hands, and a red chronograph hand, it may fit the brief; if you want the Porsche Design itself or a mechanically comparable watch, treat it as a different purchase.

Variant names matter because the current chronograph is not the same specification as the earlier alarm model covered in older reviews.

What are the black chronograph’s specifications?
These are manufacturer-stated specifications for the black PVD chronograph, not specifications for every 1972 variant.

How does it compare with other routes to the look?
A March 2025 ZEIGR comparison identifies several distinct options: a vintage Orfina Porsche Design, Sinn 144, Dan Henry 1972, and Buler Grand Prix. These are not interchangeable alternatives; choose based on whether you value the original design lineage, a contemporary watch, or simply some of the same visual cues. - Built on Bulova’s vibrant history in motorsport – from soap box derbies to the upper echelons of auto racing – the new men’s Racer chronograph watch is fine-tuned and designed for performance. The contoured black IP stainless steel case features a unique design evoking the aerodynamic curves of the world’s fastest automobiles.
- A two-tone orange and black tachymeter ring offers further functionality, while pronounced pushers provide a distinctively automotive aesthetic. The black 5-hand chronograph dial features an orange and white racing pattern chapter ring, with a date display at 6 o’clock and black subdials displaying the chronograph minutes and the 24-hour time
- A bold orange chronograph seconds hand ensures optimal legibility no matter the speed. The dial is appointed with applied silver-tone markers and matching beveled hands, all filled with a super-luminous material for low-light visibility.
- The watch is paired with a perforated black leather racing-style strap with a pin buckle closure.
- Whether gripping the wheel around the bend at the track or on your daily commute, the Bulova men’s Racer chronograph is a stylish expression of racing history and a passion for speed.
- Vintage Orfina Porsche Design: The closest route to the historical watch discussed as the 1972’s inspiration, but a vintage purchase depends on the exact reference, condition, service history, and parts or serviceability. ZEIGR specifically cautions buyers to research condition and variant.
- Sinn 144: A separate design option identified by ZEIGR, including a customized black-coating approach. Confirm the exact reference and configuration; do not assume every Sinn 144 has a black case or matches the 1972’s details.
- Dan Henry 1972: A current, separately made quartz option with the black chronograph configuration and day-date described above. Its appeal is the look and accessible listed price, not mechanical equivalence.
- Buler Grand Prix: ZEIGR notes that this option lacks chronograph functionality and uses plastic, so it is a visual alternative rather than a functional chronograph substitute.
ZEIGR’s marketplace prices are observations from its March 2025 article, not dependable current quotes. Check current listings and the precise watch being offered before comparing costs.
What should you check before buying?
- Confirm the variant. Make sure the listing says 1972 Maverick Chronograph and identifies the intended case finish and movement. The current black chronograph is the 0S00 day-date version, not the older 0S80 alarm model.
- Check the live price and availability. Dan Henry displayed $380 USD for the 1972 Maverick Chronograph when its official page was accessed; this is a page observation, not a guaranteed current offer. Verify the current price and selected variant on the manufacturer’s listing.
- Judge the fit from the full dimensions. Compare your preferred watch’s 41mm diameter, 45.7mm lug-to-lug, and 12.7mm thickness with a watch you already wear.
- Read the warranty terms. Dan Henry states that its international warranty lasts one year and covers material or workmanship defects. The manufacturer lists exclusions including straps, glass, batteries, misuse, and unauthorized service; check the current terms for details.
- For vintage choices, inspect the individual watch. Verify the reference, condition, service history, and seller’s return terms rather than relying on a model name or an old marketplace price.
Is the Dan Henry 1972 the right choice?
It makes sense if you want a black quartz chronograph with Porsche Design-inspired styling, a day-date display, and the current manufacturer-listed 41mm case. It is not the right choice if your deciding requirement is owning a Porsche Design Chronograph 1, getting an alarm function from the older 1972 model, or matching another watch mechanically.

A reader in an October 9, 2026 Reddit post said they chose the Dan Henry 1972 Maverick Day-Date after searching for a Porsche Design Chronograph 1-like watch, and cited the black steel bracelet as part of the appeal. That is one buyer’s account, not a product test; the author also described the comparison montage as AI-assisted rather than a photograph of the two watches together.
