The new Hamilton American Classic Cushion Mechanical and Timex Marlin Chatham Automatic take the cushion case in different directions: Hamilton offers smaller, hand-wound designs rooted in its 1926 models, while Timex pairs a 36mm case with an automatic movement and a lower observed US price. Which is more appealing comes down to proportions, winding preference, and the style you want—not specs alone.
Two cushion cases, two different design stories
Hamilton announced its American Classic Cushion Mechanical on October 1, 2026, describing it as a revival of its Cushion Plain and Cushion Engraved designs from 1926. The brand calls out Art Deco geometry and architectural influence in the collection’s design. That is Hamilton’s own account of the lineage, not an independent historical assessment. Hamilton’s launch announcement describes the new collection as drawing on “the geometric forms, distinctive proportions and architectural influences that defined the Art Deco era.”

Timex announced the 36mm Marlin Chatham Automatic on October 6, 2026. Timex positions it as a softer, mid-century-inspired extension of the Marlin line; its launch article opens with the observation, “It starts with the 36mm cushion case.” That description is brand-authored positioning, rather than a neutral design judgment.

The Timex dimensions are not a direct fit guarantee: diameter and lug-to-lug length do not capture how a curved cushion case sits on an individual wrist. The 44.5mm lug-to-lug length and 12mm height are listed for TW2Y84500 specifically; do not assume every variant has identical measurements.

What wearing and winding them may feel like
Hamilton: a smaller case and a daily winding ritual
At 30mm and 34mm, Hamilton gives buyers two options below the Timex’s 36mm diameter. Its hand-wound H-42 means the wearer must wind the watch rather than relying on wrist motion to keep an automatic movement running. Some people enjoy that deliberate daily interaction; others would rather avoid it. Case dimensions alone cannot establish comfort, especially with cushion-shaped cases.
Timex: automatic convenience, with a thicker profile than some expect
The Timex’s Miyota 8215 is automatic, and the silver-tone model’s product page lists approximately 42 hours of power reserve and 21 jewels. The gold-tone model’s listing gives a 12mm case height. One commenter in the reader discussion calls 12mm “pretty thick for a vintage inspired dress watch”; that is an individual reaction, not a consensus or an independent measurement. Dial choices, finishes, and practical details
Hamilton’s collection varies more than just in size: its listings include Arabic- and Roman-numeral layouts, small seconds at six, and plain or engraved case finishes. The Timex launch presents two clear palettes: silver-tone with a white dial, and gold-tone with a black dial. If you prefer a restrained modern look, the silver-and-white combination may appeal; the gold-and-black version makes a stronger contrast. Those are aesthetic preferences, not objective advantages.

For practical specifications, the cited Timex gold-tone listing states 50m water resistance and a 20mm band width. Treat that band measurement as specific to TW2Y84500 and confirm compatibility before buying a replacement strap. The Hamilton collection page cited here identifies its open caseback, but the available launch and collection details do not establish comparable water-resistance or strap-width figures for every Hamilton version.

Prices and the decision that matters
At the US pages consulted, Hamilton’s collection starts at $995, with some versions listed at $1,095. Timex lists TW2Y84300 at $289 and TW2Y84500 at $299. These are observed US prices, not a global or like-for-like comparison, and can change.
- Choose the Hamilton if its 1926 design lineage, 30mm or 34mm sizing, hand-wound movement, and dial or case options are the combination you want.
- Choose the Timex if you prefer a 36mm automatic, one of its two specified colorways, and the lower listed US price.
- Before deciding on fit, try on the actual case if possible; neither diameter nor the listed lug-to-lug figure can predict comfort on every wrist.
Neither launch material establishes real-world accuracy or comfort, and specifications cannot substitute for a timed accuracy test or a wear test. For a first impression, the Hamilton is the more historically specific and size-flexible proposition; the Timex is the more straightforward automatic alternative. Which looks better is genuinely a matter of taste.
