For David Langsam, two watches hold two different parts of his life: a Cyma Navystar given by his parents for his Bar Mitzvah, and an Omega Flightmaster his mother bought him in 1970, when he was dreaming of becoming a pilot. In a 2016 interview with Time+Tide, Langsam described the family memories, journeys and aviation fascination attached to each.
Why the Cyma Navystar matters to David
Langsam said his parents gave him the Cyma Navystar for his Bar Mitzvah. “This watch was a gift for my Bar-Mitzvah. It’s very plain, but it means a lot to me.” The watch’s importance, as he told it, is not a technical specification but the personal message on its back: wearing it feels like a tribute to his parents.

In the 2016 interview, he said, “I’ll have been wearing this watch for 50 years in July.” That is Langsam’s recollection of his ownership, not an independently verified record. The interview presents the watch as an occasional companion that he had also worn regularly over the years.
Where the Cyma travelled
Langsam recalled taking the Navystar on extensive travels and described places and encounters associated with wearing it. Those memories make the watch a record of a life lived in motion, as well as a family keepsake. The journeys are his recollections from the interview, rather than independently documented travel records.

How the Omega Flightmaster arrived
The Flightmaster connects to a different memory: Langsam’s teenage ambition to fly. “In 1968 at 15, all I ever wanted to do was be a pilot,” he recalled. After a trial instructional flight left him captivated by flying, his mother bought him a new Flightmaster in 1970, duty-free, while returning from England via Hong Kong.
Langsam remembered that it cost “about $400” at the time. The interview does not identify the currency, so the figure should be understood only as his recollection—not as a current price or a basis for estimating the watch’s value today.

What the Flightmaster’s functions meant to him
Langsam described the Flightmaster as an instrument-like watch whose functions suited his fascination with flying. He recalled using its stopwatch, its 24-hour dial settable to GMT, and its movable outer chapter ring to time flight legs. He also said GPS had made those functions largely unnecessary for him: “A cheap GPS makes it pretty much redundant, but it’s still an amazingly cool object.”
That is a personal account of how he understood and used the watch, not a current accuracy assessment or a technical specification for every Flightmaster. The interview offers no movement calibre, reference number, dimensions, authentication details or service history beyond Langsam’s comment that it had been serviced occasionally.

Two watches, two kinds of memory
In Langsam’s story, the Cyma stands for his parents’ gift and decades of travel; the Flightmaster preserves the excitement of discovering aviation and the memory of his mother’s gift. One is not presented as better than the other. Their meaning comes from the lives he associates with them, not from a comparison of performance.
The interview documents Langsam’s account of the watches; it does not independently authenticate either example. It also does not establish present-day availability or market value, and neither watch is described as being for sale.
