The 7016’s angular dial, distinctive hands and more purposeful case-and-bezel character offer a different design brief from the early Submariner cues behind Tudor’s current Black Bay 54. That is a case for a new watch, not a report of a Tudor reissue announcement.
Why the 7016 is worth reviving
The 7016 arrived in Tudor’s 1969 catalogue as part of the second era of Tudor Submariners. It was the no-date counterpart to the 7021, which added a date at 3 o’clock. Tudor’s historical account describes the 7016 as a 39 mm watch with a Rolex-signed case, 200-metre water resistance and an automatic ETA 2483 movement running at 18,000 beats per hour. The 7021 used ETA calibre 2484. Tudor’s Submariner history and its 7016 reference history document the distinction.
The watch’s strongest case for a modern return is not nostalgia alone. The flat, thick, prominent Plexiglas crystal, large square hour markers, shield logo and angular Snowflake hands gave the 7016 a visual identity that stood apart from the familiar round-marker, Mercedes-hand Submariner formula. A new watch could retain that legibility-driven design while using modern materials and construction.
Snowflake was a functional design choice
Tudor says Snowflake hands first appeared in its 1969 catalogue on the 7016 and 7021. Their broad, square luminous sections were intended to make the hands easier for divers to read. The design remained exclusive to Tudor diving watches until the mid-1980s, according to the brand, and returned to the collection in 2012 with the Black Bay and Pelagos. Tudor’s account of the Snowflake design supports the functional rationale, not just its later collector appeal.

Fratello’s account also connects the design’s development to Tudor’s work with the French Marine Nationale and requests for larger luminous hands and markers. That military context helps explain why the Snowflake treatment feels like equipment rather than decoration, though it should be understood as Fratello’s account of the development story. Fratello’s case for a modern 7016-inspired Submariner is a personal design argument, not a Tudor product plan.
“7016” does not describe one identical configuration
Collectors distinguish early 7016 “Mk1” examples from later “Mk2” versions. Fratello describes early examples with a rose logo, semi-pointed crown guards and a different dial layout; later examples have the shield, rounded crown guards and the familiar Snowflake dial and hands. These are collector labels and descriptions, not a guarantee that every surviving watch fits a neat dividing line.

Fratello also notes that early painted and lacquered dials can show deterioration or bubbling, often associated with water ingress or poor maintenance. Those observations are not a diagnosis of any particular watch: condition, originality and service history require inspection of the individual piece.
The 7016 belongs to a broader, varied family. Tudor says it produced more than 20 Submariner references from 1969 to 1999; that is the brand’s historical count for the stated production and catalogue period, not a count of surviving watches or a market estimate. The later 9401/0 replaced the 7016 in the mid-1970s, and Tudor records versions with blue or black dials and either Snowflake or traditional Submariner hands and markers. A credible revival should therefore identify which 7016 configuration it draws from instead of treating the reference as a single frozen specification.

What a 7016-inspired modern Tudor should get right
Keep the design brief distinct
Jorg Weppelink’s Fratello article puts the request plainly: “I’d love to see a modern, vintage-inspired version of the Tudor Submariner ‘Snowflake’.” That is the author’s opinion. Its most useful implication is that a new watch should do more than reuse Snowflake hands: it should draw on the 7016’s dial, case and bezel character as a coherent tool-watch design.
Weppelink contrasts that proposal with the 39 mm Black Bay 58 and 41 mm Black Bay, which he sees as drawing more heavily on early Rolex Submariner aesthetics. The point is not that those watches are poor designs; it is that a 7016 revival could occupy a different visual lane, with a tougher-looking case and bezel and the square-marker, Snowflake identity at its centre.

Balance vintage cues with everyday ownership
A revival need not copy the original’s Plexiglas or movement to respect its purpose. Modern water resistance, a robust crystal and a serviceable contemporary movement could make the watch more practical for regular wear, while carefully proportioned case geometry and a restrained dial preserve the historic character. Tudor would need to make that balance explicit: fidelity to the 7016’s silhouette and legibility matters more than reproducing every period material or specification.
Size is another design choice, not a simple instruction to reproduce 39 mm exactly. The original’s 39 mm case is a useful reference point; a modern model could retain its presence while adjusting thickness, lug shape and bezel proportions for contemporary wear. The goal should be a distinct 7016-inspired watch, not a Black Bay with a different dial.

How the current Black Bay 54 compares
The Black Bay 54 is the most relevant current Tudor for someone drawn to Snowflake hands, but its stated historical inspiration is different. Tudor describes the model as its most true-to-form Black Bay interpretation of the first Tudor diver, reference 7922. It is not a 7016 reissue. As of October 8, 2026, Tudor lists a 37 mm case, 200 m water resistance, Manufacture Calibre MT5400 and Snowflake hands; the blue version is described as a new addition. Specifications and availability can change. Tudor’s Black Bay 54 family page provides the current details.
| Option | Historical or design connection | Size and water resistance | Movement | Price information |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vintage Tudor Submariner 7016 | Original 1969-era no-date Snowflake reference; individual dial and hand configuration varies | 39 mm; 200 m | ETA 2483 automatic, 18,000 beats per hour | Current transaction value not established |
| Proposed modern 7016-inspired Tudor | Would take cues from the 7016; no reissue has been announced in the material cited | Not specified | Not specified | Not specified |
| Black Bay 54 | Tudor identifies the 7922 as its historical inspiration; includes Snowflake hands | 37 mm; 200 m | Manufacture Calibre MT5400 | US suggested retail prices shown at research time: $4,725 bracelet, $4,475 rubber strap |
The Black Bay 54 is the practical modern alternative for a buyer who wants Tudor’s Snowflake hands and a contemporary dive watch. It does not deliver the 7016’s specific case-and-dial proposition. Its US suggested retail prices above were listed when checked on October 8, 2026; Tudor notes that prices and models may change, so consult the current product page for your market before buying.
Why an original 7016 is a different proposition
An original offers period construction and the character of a vintage watch, but it also brings variation and condition risk. The reference alone does not establish that a particular example has its original dial, hands or components, nor does it tell you whether the watch has been maintained well enough for its intended use. A purchase decision should turn on the individual watch’s originality, condition and service history—not on the romance of the reference name.
No current, location-specific vintage transaction values are established here, so an original 7016 should not be assigned a price benchmark by comparison with the Black Bay 54’s current US retail pricing. Anyone considering a vintage Tudor Submariner 7016/0 should seek a specialist inspection and verify the watch’s configuration and condition before purchase.

Tudor’s own history shows why a 7016-inspired watch would be more than a cosmetic variation: the reference introduced the Snowflake identity in a no-date Submariner form, with square markers and a case built for a clear tool-watch presence. The Black Bay 54 demonstrates that Tudor can make a current watch with Snowflake hands, but its official 7922 inspiration leaves room for a model rooted in the 7016 instead. Give that model its own case and bezel character, preserve the high-visibility dial, and make it a genuine modern interpretation—not a claim that the vintage Submariner has simply returned.
