Deep Freeze: The Nivada Grenchen Antarctic’s History

Nivada Grenchen links its Antarctic watch to the U.S. Navy’s 1955–1956 Operation Deep Freeze I, but its own pages disagree on the model’s introduction year.

The Nivada Grenchen Antarctic is an automatic watch collection whose history the brand places in the 1950s. Nivada says members of the U.S. Navy’s Operation Deep Freeze I wore the watch on their 1955–1956 expedition to the South Pole. That connection is part of the brand’s account: the government record reviewed confirms the expedition, but does not mention the watch.

What was Operation Deep Freeze?

Operation Deep Freeze I was a U.S. Navy Antarctic operation that ran from 1955 to 1956. A 1959 entry in the Congressional Record describes the establishment of two shore stations in the Ross Sea and records Rear Admiral George Dufek and a Navy crew landing at the South Pole on October 31, 1956. The record helps establish the expedition’s setting and timeline; it does not identify Nivada Grenchen or the Antarctic watch.

Was the Nivada Antarctic worn during Operation Deep Freeze?

Nivada Grenchen says that “the watch was worn by the members of the American Navy’s Deep Freeze 1 during their expedition to the South Pole from 1955 to 1956.” That is the brand’s historical claim, as stated on its Rebirth page. The Congressional Record corroborates the operation’s context, not the watch’s presence. The distinction matters: the available government record is not independent confirmation that Antarctic watches accompanied the expedition.

When was the Nivada Grenchen Antarctic introduced?

Nivada Grenchen’s current pages give three different dates, so a precise introduction year is not settled by the brand’s own published accounts:

  • What Is In The Package: Men's Stainless Steel Band Wrist Watch x 1.
  • 1950: The Rebirth page says the Antarctic was created as the company’s first waterproof automatic watch.
  • 1954: The brand’s anniversary timeline says it was introduced that year and calls it “the first watch to reach Antarctica.” That is promotional brand copy, not independent verification.
  • 1957: The museum page gives this as the introduction year. It dates the Super Antarctic to 1958 and describes it as a tougher evolution associated with American Navy Deep Freeze Antarctic expeditions.

Accordingly, the most careful summary is that the Antarctic emerged in the 1950s. The conflicting dates are not reconciled on the cited pages, and the government record does not resolve them.

How the modern Antarctic and Super Antarctic differ

Nivada Grenchen revived the brand in 2018, with the Antarctic among its leading models, according to the Rebirth page. The anniversary timeline separately dates the modern Antarctic re-editions to 2020 and the Super Antarctic’s return to 2021. These are distinct milestones; the pages do not explain how the dates relate.

The manufacturer’s specifications reviewed on October 8, 2026, describe both current models with 38 mm stainless-steel cases, double-domed sapphire crystals, and 20 ATM water resistance. Their movements and strap dimensions differ:

Specification Antarctic Super Antarctic
Case 38 mm stainless steel; 11.5 mm thick 38 mm stainless steel; 11.5 mm thick; 45 mm lug-to-lug
Movement Self-winding, three-hand Sellita SW200 Self-winding, three-hand Soprod P024
Crystal Double-domed sapphire Double-domed sapphire
Listed dimensions for strap or lugs 20 mm strap width 20 mm lug width; 16 mm strap width
Water resistance 20 ATM 20 ATM

These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. The Super Antarctic page lists both a 20 mm lug width and a 16 mm strap width; check the exact reference and its actual strap dimensions before choosing a replacement. Do not assume the Antarctic name guarantees a universal strap size.

What the history and specifications do—and do not—establish

The Antarctic’s name and the brand’s Deep Freeze story connect the collection to a real period of Antarctic exploration. But the sources support different kinds of claims: Nivada supplies the watch-history account and current product specifications, while the government record establishes expedition context without documenting the watch. Likewise, a modern specification of 20 ATM water resistance does not demonstrate that a current model was tested in Antarctica or reproduce the performance of a historical watch.
