Yes. Francis Ford Coppola’s unique F.P. Journe FFC Prototype sold at Phillips’ New York auction in December 2025 for $10,755,000. The “$1 million” figure was the pre-sale estimate—Phillips estimated the watch at more than $1 million, not that it ultimately sold for that amount.
What watch did Coppola sell?
The lot was the F.P. Journe FFC Prototype, a one-of-a-kind platinum watch made for Coppola and dated circa 2021 in Phillips’ official catalogue. Phillips describes its unusual display as animated fingers indicating digital hours, alongside a rotating dial for the minutes.
The catalogue identifies the watch as a prototype and records that it came from Coppola’s collection. It also lists a remontoir d’égalité, a mechanism used to deliver more consistent force to the escapement. Phillips’ full lot description calls it “a unique and historically important prototype platinum wristwatch with instantaneous digital hours indicated by animated fingers, rotating minute dial, remontoir d’egalité, Certificate of Authenticity, and presentation box, made for Francis Ford Coppola, from the collection of Francis Ford Coppola.”
How much did the watch sell for?

Why was Coppola described as “broke”?
The description traces to Coppola’s comments about the money he put into Megalopolis. Speaking with Rick Rubin on the Tetragrammaton podcast in March 2025, he said: “I don’t have any money because I invested all the money, that I borrowed, to make ‘Megalopolis.’” He added: “It’s basically gone. I think it’ll come back over 15 or 20 years, but I don’t have it now.” The San Francisco Chronicle quoted those remarks in its October 2025 report.
Those comments describe how Coppola said he felt about funds committed to the film at that time. They are not an audited statement of his finances, and the available reporting does not establish that he is currently insolvent.

What do the reported film figures show?
The Chronicle reported an approximately $120 million investment in Megalopolis attributed to Coppola and about $14 million in box-office receipts. Both are approximate reported figures. They provide context for his comments, but do not amount to a complete accounting of the film’s financing, eventual returns, or Coppola’s overall personal finances.
