The watch named in the viral claim is real: Patek Philippe’s limited-edition Nautilus reference 5810G-001, made for the brand’s 50th anniversary of the Nautilus. The Argentina farewell is also documented. What the available sources do not establish is that Lionel Messi wore this exact reference at that match. Until a clear event photograph, a credible caption, or an independent watch identification confirms it, the sighting should be treated as unverified.
What the viral claim says
The claim circulating online is that Messi wore Patek Philippe’s 50th-anniversary Nautilus 5810G during his farewell from the Argentina national team. A Reddit post in r/horologicalpost, dated October 8, 2026, repeats the claim in its headline. That post is user-generated and does not cite a photograph, a caption, or an independent source identifying the watch, so it confirms only that the claim is circulating.
What Patek Philippe confirms about the 5810G
Patek Philippe’s own product page lists the model as 5810G-001 and describes it as a special 50th-anniversary Nautilus. The specifications on the Patek Philippe page for reference 5810G-001 are:
- Case: white gold, 41 mm diameter, 6.9 mm thick, 30 m water resistance
- Movement: self-winding caliber 240, an ultra-thin movement with a 22K gold off-center minirotor, and a stated minimum power reserve of 48 hours

- Strap: navy composite with a fabric pattern and cream stitching
- Price on the page: $75,019, as displayed when checked on October 9, 2026. Listed prices can change, so confirm the current figure on the manufacturer’s site before relying on it.

5810G versus the 5810/1G
Patek Philippe released a second 2026 anniversary reference, the 5810/1G, which is easy to confuse with the 5810G in photographs. The two are distinguished by strap or bracelet, hour-marker style, and edition size.
| Feature | 5810G-001 | 5810/1G |
|---|---|---|
| Case material | White gold | White gold |
| Diameter | 41 mm | 41 mm |
| Movement | Self-winding caliber 240 | Self-winding caliber 240 |
| Thickness and water resistance | 6.9 mm; 30 m | Not stated in the Patek Philippe material reviewed |
| Dial | Sunburst blue, horizontally embossed | Not stated in the Patek Philippe material reviewed |
| Hour markers | Baguette-cut diamonds, 0.39 carat total | Baton-style markers |
| Strap or bracelet | Navy composite strap with fabric pattern and cream stitching | White-gold bracelet |
| Limited edition | 1,000 pieces | 2,000 pieces |
| Listed price | $75,019 on Patek Philippe’s page, checked October 9, 2026 | Not stated in the Patek Philippe material reviewed |
The case material and movement match, so a photograph that shows only the case and movement will not separate the two references. The dial, hour markers, and strap or bracelet are the reliable differences. The 5810/1G product page is on Patek Philippe’s site under the 50th anniversary collection.

What the sources confirm about the farewell

“Después de una charla con el técnico de la Selección, Lionel Scaloni, hemos tomado la decisión de invitar a nuestro capitán para que pueda tener la despedida que realmente se merece el 6 de octubre, acá, en Argentina.”

Linking Messi to a specific reference requires evidence that connects the watch to him at that event. The sources available for this article do not provide that link:

- No clear event photograph has been located that shows the dial, hour markers, and strap of a 5810G on Messi’s wrist at the match.
- No official photo caption, news photo credit, or independent watch report identifies the reference.
- No direct statement from Messi, his representatives, or Patek Philippe confirms he wore the watch.
- The Reddit post repeats the claim without citing its source, so it cannot serve as confirmation.
The official sources establish two separate facts: the watch exists as a limited anniversary model, and the farewell took place as described. Neither establishes the connection between them.
How to check a watch sighting yourself
- Find the original image. Search for the photograph’s source, not a repost, and note the photo agency or outlet that published it.
- Read the caption. A credited agency caption that names the event and date is more reliable than a social media caption.
- Check the dial and hour markers. Sunburst blue with baguette diamonds points to the 5810G. Baton markers on a white-gold bracelet point to the 5810/1G.
- Check the strap. A navy fabric-pattern composite strap with cream stitching matches the 5810G; a white-gold bracelet does not.
- Look for an independent identification. Watch publications and collectors often confirm references from high-resolution images. If none exists, treat the identification as unconfirmed.
If a high-resolution photograph from the match or a credible watch report later establishes the reference, that evidence should be checked against the steps above before the identification is accepted.
Buying the 5810G-001
The 5810G-001 is a real manufacturer listing with a stated 1,000-piece limit, but the sources reviewed for this article do not establish which retailers stock it, whether any listing is authorized, or what its availability is. Check Patek Philippe’s site and its authorized dealers directly before comparing prices.
The reference can be searched by its full model number, Patek Philippe Nautilus 5810G-001, to find listings. Any listing should be checked for seller authorization and for its current price against the manufacturer’s page.
Reader phrasing
Readers searching for this topic often ask “What watch did Messi wear for his Argentina farewell?” or “Is Messi’s watch the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5810G?” The first question remains unanswered by the available evidence. The second can be answered only in part: the 5810G is a real reference that matches the viral claim, but its connection to Messi at the match is not confirmed.
