Caliber 9RB2, which Grand Seiko rates at ±20 seconds per year. The “most accurate wristwatch movement powered by a mainspring” wording is Grand Seiko’s own claim, made in an April 1, 2025 announcement and qualified by the company as “as of April 2025, based on Grand Seiko’s research.” Read it as a manufacturer rating and a dated company claim, not as an independent test result.
What the SLGB009 is
The SLGB009 is an Evolution 9 model in Grand Seiko’s White Birch family. Grand Seiko says the dial’s pattern and delicate coloring capture the quiet mood of white birch forests near its Shinshu Watch Studio in Nagano Prefecture, and the blue Spring Drive seconds hand sits against that birch-inspired surface. The design inspiration is the maker’s own account.
The headline change in this model is the movement. Grand Seiko pairs the birch dial with Caliber 9RB2, a movement from its U.F.A. line. The sources used for this article do not spell out what the U.F.A. abbreviation stands for, so this article uses the name as Grand Seiko writes it.
How Spring Drive U.F.A. works
Spring Drive is a mainspring-powered movement, but its timekeeping is governed electronically. A quartz oscillator and an integrated circuit regulate the mechanical train. Grand Seiko’s April 2025 announcement credits the U.F.A. accuracy to enhanced manufacturing and processing methods for a quartz oscillator that was aged for three months, together with a newly designed IC. That is Grand Seiko’s description of its development approach. The sources contain no independent laboratory comparison and no test of an individual watch.

What ±20 seconds per year means in practice
- Daily equivalent. ±20 seconds per year works out to roughly ±0.055 seconds per day (20 ÷ 365).
- The monthly figure is an approximation. Dividing 20 seconds by 12 gives about 1.7 seconds, not 3. Grand Seiko’s “approximately ±3 seconds per month” is therefore not a straight conversion of the annual rating, and the sources do not state its basis.
- Different test standards. The Swiss COSC chronometer certification is expressed per day, with a tolerance of −4/+6 seconds per day for mechanical movements. It is a separate test with separate conditions, so a per-year rating from Grand Seiko should not be ranked directly against it.
- Power reserve. With about 72 hours of reserve, a watch left unworn for more than about three days will stop and need winding before it runs to its rating again.
The “most accurate” claim, read carefully
Grand Seiko’s April 1, 2025 announcement states that the automatic U.F.A. movement “has an astounding annual rate of ±20 seconds, making it the most accurate wristwatch movement powered by a mainspring today.” The release footnote adds: “As of April 2025, based on Grand Seiko’s research.”
- Who makes the claim. Grand Seiko, in its own press release.
- What it compares. Wristwatch movements powered by a mainspring, not all wristwatch movements.
- When it applies. The footnote fixes the claim to April 2025.
- What it rests on. Grand Seiko’s own research. The sources for this article include no independent comparative test.
- What it cannot tell you. Whether a later release has overtaken it as of October 2026. This article cannot confirm the current position of any competing movement.

Grand Seiko’s April 2025 announcement names its boutiques and select retail partners as sales channels for U.F.A. models. Buying from one of those channels is the most direct way to confirm that the seller is authorized.
How it compares
The evidence supports comparison along a few specific axes: the rated annual accuracy and how Grand Seiko defines it; the approximately 72-hour power reserve; the case dimensions and Ever-Brilliant Steel construction; the dial design and its stated inspiration; and regional price, warranty and availability. The sources do not support a wider ranking of competing watches.

Do not transfer dimensions from the earlier U.F.A. models. Grand Seiko’s 2025 release lists SLGB001 and SLGB003 as the first U.F.A. creations, with a 37 mm case. The SLGB009’s 40.0 mm case is its own specification.

- Confirm the current price and stock on the seller’s page, because the listings above are dated.
- Confirm the seller is a Grand Seiko boutique or a listed retail partner.
- Ask the seller for the warranty terms that apply in your country.
- Check the 40.0 mm diameter and 47.2 mm lug-to-lug length on your wrist. Lug-to-lug length often matters more than diameter for fit.
The SLGB009 is a credible choice for a buyer who values a mainspring movement with an electronically governed rate and a dial rooted in a specific place. Its accuracy rating is strong on paper, but it is Grand Seiko’s rating, and it should be judged as such.
