Enamel and hand-painted dials are rare enough that a shortlist has to be built from what makers document, not from sales rankings. The five entries below are three Breguet references whose enamel or painted work the brand describes in specific terms, plus two houses whose enamel-painting craft is documented at brand level only. This is a craft-led selection, not a tested or ranked recommendation, and it does not check current prices or stock.
How this shortlist was chosen
- The maker must state, in its own published description, that the dial is enamel or hand-painted.
- The technique must be named or described precisely enough to tell it apart from other methods, such as grand feu enamel, petit feu enamel, or a sapphire dial painted by hand.
- Entries that only have a brand-level craft statement, with no verified specific reference, are kept separate and labelled as such.
Independent testing, comparative value, current pricing and retail availability are outside the scope of this list. Specifications and availability change, so confirm them on the maker’s current product page before making any buying decision.
What the enamel and painting terms mean
Vacheron Constantin describes enamel as finely ground glass mixed with oxide pigments, applied in layers to metal and then fired. Its catalogue distinguishes several methods, each with different requirements. The table below sets out the terms that appear in this shortlist.
| Term | What it means | Where it appears in this shortlist |
|---|---|---|
| Grand feu enamel | Glass enamel layered onto a metal base and fired, producing a smooth, glass-like surface | Breguet Classique Souscription 2025 (white grand feu dial) |
| Petit feu enamel | Enamel applied in smaller, finer work, used here for detail elements | Breguet Classique Souscription 2025 (numerals, markers and signature) |
| Cloisonné | Thin metal partitions form cells that are filled with enamel | Named as a distinct technique in Vacheron Constantin’s catalogue; no specific reference is verified here |
| Champlevé | Recesses cut into the metal are filled with enamel | Named as a distinct technique in Vacheron Constantin’s catalogue; no specific reference is verified here |
| Hand-painted sapphire | Decoration applied by hand to a sapphire crystal dial | Breguet Marine Hora Mundi 5555 |
| Enamel painting | Images painted onto enamel | Jaquet Droz, on selected pieces; Vacheron Constantin’s miniature painting work |
Enamel and hand-painted are not the same thing
An enamel dial is a fused glass layer on a metal base. A hand-painted dial carries decoration applied by brush. The two can appear together, which is why a single label is not enough. Breguet’s Marine Hora Mundi 5555 description combines them: a sapphire dial hand-painted in three phases on both sides, with phosphorescent enamel. When comparing watches, ask which surface carries the enamel and which carries the paint, and use the maker’s exact wording rather than a general label such as “enamel dial.”

The five entries
1. Breguet Classique Souscription 2025, ref. 2025BH/28/9W6
This is the clearest documented grand feu example in this shortlist. Breguet describes the face as “adorned with a dazzling white, grand feu enamel dial that faithfully reproduces the spirit of the timepieces once produced at the Quai de l’Horloge workshop, such as the No. 246, No. 324 and No. 383 watches.” The numerals, markers and signature are in petit feu enamel, and the watch has a single hand. Breguet dated the announcement 24 April 2025. The quotation is the brand’s own description, not an independent evaluation.
2. Breguet Tradition Seconde Rétrograde 7035
Breguet describes this model as having a hand-made enamel dial with a Quai de l’Horloge guilloché design. The announcement is dated 16 May 2025. The maker’s description does not specify which enamel method is used, so this entry should not be read as a grand feu example. Its interest here is the combination of hand-made enamel with the engine-turned guilloché motif that the brand links to its Quai de l’Horloge heritage.
Rank #2
- Material: Steel
- Size: 38.9mm
- Color: As picture
- Second at 6 o'clock Suitable For ETA 6498. For Seagull (ST3620 series)
3. Breguet Marine Hora Mundi 5555
This is the only painted-sapphire entry in the shortlist. Breguet describes a sapphire dial painted by hand in three phases on both sides, combined with phosphorescent enamel. Because the decoration runs on both sides of the sapphire, the painted work is visible from the front and the reverse. The maker’s description does not provide the announcement date or the case specifications for this reference.
4. Vacheron Constantin Métiers d’Art (brand-level entry)
Vacheron Constantin’s 2025–26 catalogue describes miniaturized artistic work, including enamel and miniature painting. No specific reference from that range is verified for this shortlist, so this entry identifies the craft line rather than a watch to buy. Look up the current Métiers d’Art references in the catalogue before comparing them with the Breguet models above.
Rank #3
- Mineral crystal lens
- Burgundy mother-of-pearl dial with genuine diamond at 12; rose gold-tone hands and markers
- Rose gold-tone bangle with burgundy enamel filling; adjustable end links; jewelry clasp and extender
- Water resistant to 100 feet (30M)
5. Jaquet Droz enamel-painted watches (brand-level entry)
Jaquet Droz states that enamel painting appears on selected pieces. The statement does not name a current reference, and it does not indicate which models carry the work. Treat it as a craft direction to explore in the brand’s current collection, not as a specific recommendation.
Side-by-side: what each documented entry states
The table covers the three entries with a model-level description from the maker. Where the maker’s description does not state a value, the cell says so.
Rank #4
- Material: Metal
- Hour hand length: approx.5.2mm
- Minute hand length: approx.12.2mm
- Second hand length: approx.16.5mm
- Second at 6 o'clock Suitable For 6498 ST3620 series
| Watch | Reference and announcement date | Enamel or painted method (maker’s description) | Artwork placement | Dial display |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Breguet Classique Souscription 2025 | ref. 2025BH/28/9W6; announced 24 April 2025 | White grand feu enamel | Dial face; numerals, markers and signature in petit feu enamel | Single hand (Breguet description); legibility not stated |
| Breguet Tradition Seconde Rétrograde 7035 | Announced 16 May 2025 | Hand-made enamel dial; enamel method not stated | Dial with Quai de l’Horloge guilloché motif | Not stated in the maker’s description |
| Breguet Marine Hora Mundi 5555 | Announcement date not stated in the maker’s description | Sapphire dial hand-painted in three phases on both sides, with phosphorescent enamel | Both sides of the sapphire dial | Not stated in the maker’s description |
For all three Breguet models, the maker’s description does not state case size, case material, movement, water resistance, price, warranty or current availability. Those details belong on the current product page and should be confirmed there.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to verify before you buy
- Ask for the enamel or painting method in writing, using the maker’s terms: grand feu, petit feu, cloisonné, champlevé, or hand-painted.
- For a painted sapphire such as the Marine Hora Mundi 5555, confirm which sides are decorated and whether the phosphorescent enamel is applied on the dial or the hands.
- Match the reference number to the maker’s current catalogue. Reference numbers and collections change between seasons.
- Confirm case size, movement, water resistance, warranty and service terms directly with the maker or an authorized retailer.
- If possible, examine the dial in the lighting you will wear it in. Enamel and painted surfaces can look different under daylight and artificial light.
Where to start
If you want a documented enamel dial with a specific reference and a precise description of its technique, the Breguet Classique Souscription 2025 is the most fully described entry here. If hand-painted decoration on sapphire is the priority, the Marine Hora Mundi 5555 is the only painted-sapphire example in the shortlist. The Vacheron Constantin and Jaquet Droz entries are best approached through their current catalogues, where specific references can be compared directly.
