MIDO had credible value credentials, including COSC-certified automatic models and an Ocean Star 600 Chronometer specified with a silicon balance spring, up to 80 hours of autonomy and 600 m water resistance. But the available evidence does not establish a like-for-like set of 2021 prices or verify movement provenance across the relevant models. That is not enough to call MIDO the best-value maker of Swiss in-house chronometers for that year.
What MIDO’s COSC range tells us
MIDO’s official Chronometer Watches (COSC) collection identifies COSC-certified automatic watches, including Multifort and Ocean Star variants. The current collection also names Commander and Baroncelli chronometer models. Those current listings confirm the brand’s range now; they should not be treated as a complete or unchanged record of what was offered in 2021.
MIDO describes COSC as the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute and says its models are tested and certified by that body. For a comparison, certification should be confirmed for the exact reference, rather than inferred from a collection name or from another watch in the same family.
What the Ocean Star 600 Chronometer offers
MIDO’s official Ocean Star 600 Chronometer M026.608.11.051.00 page specifies a COSC-certified movement, a silicon balance spring, up to 80 hours of autonomy and water resistance to 60 bar / 600 m. These features make it a compelling specification-led example of MIDO’s chronometer proposition, particularly for a buyer seeking a highly water-resistant watch.
#1 Best Overall
- Swiss Made Watch
- Movement: Automatic MIDO caliber with Day/Date calendar - Power reserve 80 hours
- Case Type: Diver-style Titanium case with black rotating bezel - Capable of withstanding pressures of up to 20 bar (200 m/660 ft), and equipped with a screw-down crown, this watch offers optimal protection against water.
- Case Size: 42.5mm - Case Thickness: 11.8mm - Anthracite color dial offering indexes filled with Super-Luminova and skeletonised hands - Crystal: Sapphire crystal with double sided anti-reflection treatment
- Band Type: Titanium bracelet - Folding clasp with diving extension - Band Width: 22mm
That page documents the current model’s stated specifications, not necessarily the precise configuration, availability or price of a 2021 watch. The brand’s Europe 2021 catalogue provides dated lineup context, but it does not supply the cross-brand price comparison needed to prove a value ranking.
Why “best value in 2021” is not established
Value is comparative: it depends on the price actually available in a defined market and the attributes a buyer prioritizes. The evidence here does not establish comparable 2021 prices for MIDO and competing COSC-certified watches. Current MIDO prices are geographically specific and change over time, so they cannot stand in for historical prices.
Rank #2
- Swiss Made Titanium Watch for Men and Women
- Movement: Automatic Mido Caliber - Power reserve 80 hours
- Case Type: Titanium TV-shaped case with see-through case back and screw-down crown with crown guards
- Case Size: 40mm - Case Thickness: 11.48mm - Crystal: Sapphire crystal with double sided anti-reflection treatment
- Strap: Titanium Bracelet with Folding Clasp Closure - Lug Width: 22mm
A contemporaneous review published in November 2021 reported a price of €1,150 / $1,250 for the Ocean Star Decompression Timer 1961 limited edition. That is a different model and is not evidence of the price of a MIDO COSC chronometer. Swatch Group’s announcement about the reissue likewise does not establish COSC certification for it.
Without matching exact references, sales year, market, condition and price type, there is no sound basis for naming a universal winner. A retail price in one country, a street price elsewhere and a pre-owned listing are not interchangeable comparison points.

Does “MIDO caliber” mean “in-house”?
Not by itself. The available brand pages identify MIDO models and movements, but they do not establish a consistent, reference-by-reference definition of “in-house” or independently demonstrate the manufacturing provenance of every relevant 2021 movement. Buyers who consider in-house production essential should verify the movement source for the exact reference and define what they mean by the term—for example, whether they require the movement to be designed and manufactured by the watch brand itself.
How to make a fair comparison
To decide whether a specific MIDO was good value against another watch, compare the same kinds of evidence for each candidate:

- Swiss Made Automatic Watch
- Movement: Automatic Movement Mido Caliber 72 - With 72 hours of power reserve and nivachron balance spring
- Case Type: 316L Stainless steel diver style with screw-down crown and unidirectional rotating bezel
- Case Size: 39mm - Band Width: 20mm - Case Thickness: 10.5mm - Sapphire crystal with double sided anti-reflection treatment
- Band: Satin-finished stainless steel bracelet and folding clasp with diver’s extension, with polished centre link bevels, MIDO quick-change system.
- Reference and year: identify the exact watch and confirm it was sold in the market and year being considered.
- Price basis: record the country, date, currency, condition and whether the figure is retail, street or pre-owned.
- Certification: check that COSC status applies to the exact model or reference.
- Movement provenance: establish the movement’s source and use the same meaning of “in-house” for every brand.
- Specifications and use: weigh power reserve, materials, water resistance, case dimensions and wearability against how the watch will be used.
- Ownership considerations: consider warranty terms and access to servicing alongside the purchase price.
Verdict
MIDO’s documented COSC models and the Ocean Star 600 Chronometer’s stated specifications support a case for strong value, but not a defensible claim that MIDO offered the best value among all COSC-certified Swiss in-house chronometers in 2021. The missing like-for-like historical prices and unverified movement provenance prevent that broader conclusion.
