Greubel Forsey Hand Made 1: My Unattainable Grail

Greubel Forsey’s Hand Made 1 turns traditional watchmaking skills into a personal grail: a hand-built tourbillon with rare production and dated price references.

The Greubel Forsey Hand Made 1 is an unattainable grail not simply because its price is extraordinary, but because it gives physical form to an ideal: watchmaking in which traditional hand skills remain central. Greubel Forsey describes it as assembled, decorated, and machined entirely by hand; the figures and production details below are the maker’s claims or, where noted, those of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG). The grail idea is personal rather than a universal measure of what collectors should want.

What makes the Greubel Forsey Hand Made 1 special?

Greubel Forsey presents Hand Made 1 as a statement about how a watch can be made, not only what complications it contains. The company says its parts are machined, finished, and assembled by hand, using processes that require considerable time and skill. That is a maker description, not an independent audit of every production step.

The GPHG record for reference P521, launched in October 2019, reports that 95% of the watch is made using hand-operated tools and that its creation takes 6,000 hours. It also says 308 components required more than 800 individual parts to be made to meet Greubel Forsey’s criteria. Those are figures published by the award organization, not independently measured estimates.

Handwork in the regulating organ

Greubel Forsey says the regulating organ is made by hand in its workshops, including a balance spring formed from an in-house alloy. The maker describes casting only a few springs at a time, rather than producing industrial runs of hundreds. The point is not that every hand operation is automatically superior; it is that this approach preserves techniques and tolerances that large-scale production is designed to avoid.

#1 Best Overall
13 mm green luminous second hand watch hands for NH35 NH36 movement(-1)
  • 1. Highlighted bright green luminous, clear time display at night
  • 2. Standard size of 13mm, accurate dimensions for a smooth fit
  • 3. Compatible with mechanical movements NH35 and NH36
  • 4. Material construction, sturdy and wear-resistant
  • 5. Easy installation, great accessory for watch customization

The GPHG record adds a striking example of the challenge: it describes the tourbillon carriage as comprising 69 components and weighing 0.521 g. It says making the carriage by hand presented a geometry challenge compared with CNC manufacture. These details help explain why “handmade” here refers to demanding component-level work, not merely hand assembly.

Finishing that rewards close attention

Greubel Forsey lists hand-finished movement details including bridges with polished inner and outer vertical flanks, a “gratté main” mainplate, and wheels with hand-polished bevels. The dial decoration is hand-enamelled, while the hands are flame-blued. The maker also says one five-spoke wheel contains 40 sharp internal angles. These are small features, but they make the watch’s craft proposition legible: the labor is visible in surfaces, edges, and geometry, not just in a headline production-hour figure.

What are the Hand Made 1’s specifications?

Greubel Forsey’s current product page gives the following figures for Hand Made 1. The watch is manually wound and features a tourbillon and small seconds.

Specification Greubel Forsey published figure
Case material White gold
Diameter 43.50 mm
Height 13.50 mm
Water resistance 30 m
Power reserve 60 hours
Frequency 21,600 vibrations per hour
Winding Manual
Complications and display Tourbillon and small seconds

A 2025 Quill & Pad review gives the height as 13.6 mm rather than the maker’s 13.50 mm and reports a 52.2 mm lug-to-lug measurement. The slight height discrepancy is worth noting; these figures should not be silently combined as if they came from one specification sheet.

How many Hand Made 1 watches are made each year?

Greubel Forsey says the watch is made at the pace of “a single timepiece each year.” That is the manufacturer’s published production statement, not a promise of annual availability, a confirmed allocation, or a guarantee that a buyer can place an order. The product page provides an “Express my interest” route and concierge contact, but no public wait time, live stock, or order guarantee.

How much does a Greubel Forsey Hand Made 1 cost?

There is no current public price on Greubel Forsey’s product page. Published figures provide historical context, not a reliable quote for a purchase in 2026.

Why call it an “unattainable grail”?

In the matching Fratello essay, watch writer Thor Svaboe calls it “the Hand Made 1 remains my unattainable grail watch.” His framing is personal: the watch represents an ideal of preserving watchmaking skill, rather than a simple ambition to own an expensive object. Readers may share that sentiment or define a grail differently; the phrase is most useful as a way to describe what the object means to one enthusiast.

That distinction matters. A grail can be a reference point—a reminder of what meticulous handwork, patience, and inherited craft can mean—even when the price, scarcity, or practical realities put ownership beyond reach. The Hand Made 1 makes that ideal unusually tangible through its maker-described methods and the technical detail recorded by GPHG.
