A dive watch’s depth rating is not a complete safety guarantee or a substitute for the manufacturer’s instructions. It tells you only part of the story: ISO 6425 also covers features such as a secured diving-time indication visible in darkness, while a watch’s actual water resistance can be affected by damage. Here’s what the rating can—and cannot—tell you.
Does a water-resistance rating mean you can dive to that depth?
No. A printed depth rating does not, by itself, establish that a watch is suitable for a particular dive or will remain water-resistant in its present condition. Nor does the available standard information provide a universal chart that converts ratings into safe limits for swimming, snorkeling, or scuba diving.
Follow the specific watchmaker’s intended-use guidance. A rating is one specification, not a guarantee about an individual watch’s condition or a recommendation for a dive. Use dive equipment and procedures appropriate to the dive.
What does ISO 6425 mean on a dive watch?
ISO 6425:2018 is the fourth edition of the International Organization for Standardization’s divers’ watch standard. ISO says it “specifies requirements and test methods for divers’ watches and for saturation divers’ watches for use in deep diving.” Its scope applies to watches designed for at least 100 m and equipped with a secured diving-time indication visible in darkness. ISO lists the edition as reviewed and confirmed in 2024, and current. See ISO 6425:2018.

- Stainless Steel case with Black Resin Band
- Black Dial with date window at 3 O'clock
- Luminous markers and hour hands; sweep second hand
- Anti-reverse bezel
- Water-resistant to 200 M (660 feet)
That scope shows why a depth number alone is not the whole story. Citizen describes diver’s watches as meeting ISO 6425 and identifies readability, magnetic resistance, shock resistance, and strap strength among the requirements. These are characteristics associated with the standard, not facts established by a water-resistance number alone. Citizen’s explanation of diver’s watches.
Terminology can vary by manufacturer. Citizen says it reserves “diver’s watch” for watches conforming to ISO 6425. Treat that as Citizen’s stated policy—not as proof that every brand uses the term identically or that there is one universal naming rule. When comparing watches, check whether the maker documents conformity rather than inferring it from the styling or a depth rating.

- The waterproof level of this watch has reached 10 ATM waterproof, which can work normally at a depth of 100 meters (330ft) underwater. It is not only suitable for wearing in water activities such as swimming, diving, snorkeling, surfing, rowing, water skiing, but also suitable for wearing in daily life and outdoor sports, such as jogging, hiking, climbing, cycling, etc.
- The built-in stopwatch and timer function of the watch can meet the precise timing needs of exercise and sports competitions.
- The dual time zone display function will make your trips more convenient; 12/24 hour format display can meet the time reading habits of different people.
- Support multiple useful functions, such as: alarm clock, hourly chime, calendar and back light.
- The watch battery is replaceable. If you find that the watch is not working or the text on the display is not clear, please replace the watch battery in time.
Is a 200 m water-resistant watch safe for scuba diving?
The number alone cannot answer that. Check the exact model’s manufacturer guidance and whether the maker documents ISO 6425 conformity. The rating does not independently establish the watch’s diving-time indication, its visibility in darkness, or other relevant features; it also cannot tell you whether a particular watch has been damaged since manufacture.
Do not treat “200 m” as a promise that you can safely dive to 200 m, or as a general conversion rule for recreational activities. The available ISO scope specifies a minimum design depth for watches covered by the standard; it is not a consumer chart assigning every rating to a swimming or diving activity.

- 330 ft. (100 M) water resistance. In general, suitable for recreational surfing, swimming, snorkeling, sailing and water sports.
- 12/24-hour timekeeping, 43 mm resin case with mineral dial window, Japanese quartz movement; Analog: 3 hands (hour, minute, second)
- Case / bezel material: Resin; Rotating bezel
- Day and date display at 3 o’clock
- Analog display, molded resin band with buckle closure; Accuracy: ±20 seconds per month
Can a knock or scratch affect water resistance?
Yes. Citizen warns that scratches or damage to the crystal and deformation of components may impair water resistance. An original rating should not be assumed to describe a watch’s current condition after visible damage. Citizen’s water-resistance guidance.
If the watch has been knocked hard or shows damage, ask the manufacturer or a qualified service provider about it before relying on its water resistance. A home inspection cannot establish that the watch is safe for use underwater.

- DIVER-INSPIRED DESIGN — Inspired by the sea, the MDV-106B is styled after classic dive watches and delivers 200-meter water resistance at an unbeatable price point. The black resin band and stainless steel case give it a classic look, while the anti-reverse rotary bezel adds authentic dive-watch character.
- STAINLESS STEEL CASE WITH SCREW-LOCK CROWN & CASEBACK — The MDV-106B features a stainless steel case and a reliable screw-lock crown for enhanced water resistance protection. Screw-down crown and screw-lock caseback work together to keep the movement sealed and secure during water activities — a construction standard found on dive watches far above this price range.
- LARGE FLUORESCENT HANDS & INDICES FOR INSTANT READABILITY — The dial features hands and hour indices with large fluorescent areas for easy reading in low-light and underwater conditions. The clean 3-hand analog layout with date display at 3 o'clock keeps the dial uncluttered and immediately legible at a glance.
- 44MM STAINLESS STEEL CASE | 22MM LUG WIDTH | MINERAL GLASS — The case measures 44mm in diameter, 12mm in height, with a 49mm lug-to-lug length and a standard 22mm lug width — making strap upgrades effortless with a vast range of aftermarket options. Mineral glass protects the dial from everyday scratches and impacts.
- 3-YEAR BATTERY & 200M WATER RESISTANCE — Powered by an SR626SW battery with an approximate 3-year life, the case measures 49.5 × 46.3 × 12.1mm and weighs 92 grams. At 200 meters of water resistance, the Duro is versatile and suitable for all situations — whether in the water, hiking, running, or at the office.
Does a dive watch need a helium escape valve?
No—not as a universal requirement for every diver or every dive watch. A helium escape valve is a specialized feature associated with saturation diving. Citizen’s manual explains that helium can penetrate a watch during deep diving and that the valve discharges that gas. Read Citizen’s helium escape valve manual.
The documented function is specific to that use case. The source does not establish that the valve is necessary for ordinary recreational diving, so its presence should not be treated as a general measure of whether a watch is suitable for a diver.

How to assess a dive watch before buying or using one
For a prospective purchase, use the manufacturer’s information for the exact model. For a watch you already own, include its current condition in the decision rather than relying only on the original specification.
Quick Recap
- Check the stated water-resistance rating and the manufacturer’s guidance on intended use.
- Look for explicit manufacturer documentation of ISO 6425 conformity; do not infer it from the dial or appearance.
- Check how elapsed diving time is indicated and whether that indication is legible in darkness, as relevant to the ISO scope.
- Review other manufacturer-documented features relevant to your use, including readability, magnetic or shock resistance, and strap strength.
- Consider the watch’s condition and maintenance history, particularly after a knock or visible damage.
- Consider a helium escape valve only in relation to the specific saturation-diving use case described by the manufacturer.
