ISO 6425:2018 also specifies a secured way to measure dive time that can be seen in darkness.
What makes a watch a dive watch?
The standards-based reference is ISO 6425:2018, Horology — Divers’ watches. ISO says it applies to watches designed to withstand diving at depths of at least 100 m and equipped with a secured measuring system to indicate dive time that is visible in darkness. The depth and the dive-time indication are parts of the same definition; neither should be treated as the whole test.

That means a watch marked “100 m” is not automatically proven to conform to ISO 6425. The marking communicates a depth rating, while conformity is a claim about the watch meeting the standard’s requirements. To assess a particular watch, look for manufacturer documentation that explicitly identifies the exact model as conforming to ISO 6425.

What does ISO 6425:2018 establish?
ISO lists the current reference as ISO 6425:2018, Edition 4, published in October 2018. The organization says the edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2024 and remains current in its official listing: ISO 6425:2018 — Horology — Divers’ watches.
#1 Best Overall
- Stainless Steel case with Black Resin Band
- Black Dial with date window at 3 O'clock
- Luminous markers and hour hands; sweep second hand
- Anti-reverse bezel
- Water-resistant to 200 M (660 feet)
The standard’s stated scope sets a design depth of at least 100 m and requires a secured dive-time measuring system visible in darkness. This scope is useful for understanding the category, but it does not show that any particular watch has been tested or certified. Check the maker’s documentation for the specific model rather than inferring compliance from its name, appearance, or depth figure.
How to evaluate a specific dive watch
- Check the exact model’s documentation. Look for an explicit statement that the watch conforms to ISO 6425; do not assume that a brand’s general description applies to every model.
- Read the stated depth rating in context. ISO’s scope refers to at least 100 m, but a depth number by itself does not establish conformity or suitability for diving.
- Look for the secured dive-time indication. ISO’s description includes a system for measuring dive time that is visible in darkness. Confirm that the manufacturer documents this feature for the model.
What a depth rating does—and does not—tell you
The 100 m figure in ISO 6425:2018 is a minimum in the standard’s stated scope, not a universal diving recommendation for every watch carrying a 100 m marking. A rating alone does not tell you whether the watch conforms to the standard. Treat the two claims separately: the stated depth rating and documented ISO 6425 conformity.
Rank #2
- The waterproof level of this watch has reached 10 ATM waterproof, which can work normally at a depth of 100 meters (330ft) underwater. It is not only suitable for wearing in water activities such as swimming, diving, snorkeling, surfing, rowing, water skiing, but also suitable for wearing in daily life and outdoor sports, such as jogging, hiking, climbing, cycling, etc.
- The built-in stopwatch and timer function of the watch can meet the precise timing needs of exercise and sports competitions.
- The dual time zone display function will make your trips more convenient; 12/24 hour format display can meet the time reading habits of different people.
- Support multiple useful functions, such as: alarm clock, hourly chime, calendar and back light.
- The watch battery is replaceable. If you find that the watch is not working or the text on the display is not clear, please replace the watch battery in time.
For a comparison between watches, use model-specific evidence: documented conformity, the stated depth rating, and a secured dive-time measuring system visible in darkness. If manufacturer materials do not establish one of those points, regard it as unverified rather than filling the gap with assumptions.
