Amazfit’s instructions for several specific models use Zepp for initial pairing and firmware updates. What remains available offline depends on your exact watch, so check its manual before relying on a particular feature.
What “working without Zepp” means
There are two different situations: using a watch after it has already been set up, and trying to set it up or maintain it without the app. Official instructions for the Cheetah 2 Ultra and T-Rex 3 use Zepp for first-time pairing and system updates, but those instructions do not establish that every function stops when the app is unavailable.

Offline capabilities are model-specific. The available official materials do not provide a complete list of functions that work without Zepp across all Amazfit watches. Check the manual for your model rather than assuming that all workouts work offline—or that the watch becomes unusable.

Can you set up an Amazfit watch without Zepp?
For the Cheetah 2 Ultra, Amazfit’s setup instructions direct you to install and open Zepp, log in, and scan the QR code displayed on the watch. The T-Rex 3 instructions also use the watch’s QR code and Zepp for pairing. These examples establish the app-based setup flow for those models; they do not prove that every Amazfit model has identical instructions.

The Active Edge manual calls Zepp a “must-have app for this watch” and describes app-based pairing. That wording applies to the Active Edge documentation, not automatically to every Amazfit watch.
Do Amazfit watches need Zepp for updates?
For the Cheetah 2 Ultra and T-Rex 3, Amazfit’s instructions route system updates through Zepp while the watch is connected to a phone. Menu names and locations can vary by model and app version, so follow the matching manual or support page rather than relying on a path from another watch.

If an update fails on a GTS 2 Mini, Amazfit’s troubleshooting guidance includes reopening Zepp, signing out and back in, reconnecting the watch, or reinstalling the app. That model’s support page also advises fully charging the watch or having at least 10% battery before updating. Treat that battery advice as specific to the GTS 2 Mini guidance, not a universal requirement for every model.

Some features need an active connection between the watch and phone. The Balance manual identifies notifications and Bluetooth calling as phone-connected features. It also says that if the phone terminates Zepp in the background, the watch disconnects and cannot receive app notifications.

This does not mean that every watch function requires the phone continuously. The available manuals do not establish a universal offline-feature list, so check your own model’s documentation for the functions you plan to use away from your phone.

What to do before using your watch without your phone
- For a new watch: Follow the pairing instructions for its exact model. The Cheetah 2 Ultra and T-Rex 3 use Zepp and the watch’s on-screen QR code.
- For firmware updates: Connect the watch to the phone and use the update control in Zepp if that is what your model’s instructions specify.
- If an update will not start: Use your model’s support steps. GTS 2 Mini guidance includes reopening Zepp, signing out and back in, reconnecting, or reinstalling the app.
- For daily offline use: Check the manual for your model, especially if you depend on notifications, Bluetooth calling, syncing, or another phone-connected feature.
