A watch can be mechanically sophisticated yet show only the time. Removing a familiar function does not necessarily make it incomplete: it can shift the emphasis to legibility, slimness, or another design goal. Anders Modig Davin explores that idea through three watches in his October 7, 2026, WorldTempus editor’s letter, “Like a Soup without Salt?”
What does “a chronograph without a chronograph” mean?
It describes a watch whose movement or engineering is associated with a function that the dial does not display. Davin’s examples ask whether something has been lost when a watch departs from familiar expectations: a chronograph-related movement used for a simpler display, a chronometer with no seconds hand, or a tourbillon presented alongside other complications.

The question is not simply how many functions a watch has. It is whether the movement, display, and design serve a coherent purpose. A stripped-back dial may prioritize the time, while a watch with additional indications may make its mechanical features part of the visual experience.

| Watch | What the wearer sees | Documented movement and features | Price information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zenith Chronomaster Solo Sport | Three-hand display, with date and no-date variants | Zenith identifies the El Primero 3620 as a 5 Hz movement (36,000 vibrations per hour) with 60 hours of power reserve. | CHF 9,900 for the date references listed on Zenith’s pressroom page when accessed; not a universal or timeless retail price. |
| Omega Constellation Observatory | Two hands; presented by Davin as a certified chronometer | Davin discusses the design and testing rationale. The details in his account are not independently verified here. | Not stated in the cited article or verified product information. |
| BA111OD Chapter 4 Infinity Flying Tourbillon | Time display with small seconds, moon phase, and flying tourbillon | BA111OD lists a 41 mm stainless-steel case, hand-wound movement, 120-hour power reserve, and chronometer certification. | CHF 12,200.00 on BA111OD’s official product page when accessed; not a guaranteed transaction price. |
Why show a high-frequency movement with a simpler display?
The Chronomaster Solo Sport pairs a three-hand presentation with Zenith’s El Primero 3620, which the brand lists at 5 Hz, or 36,000 vibrations per hour. The pressroom also lists 60 hours of power reserve and date and no-date versions. In this example, the dial need not display a chronograph function for the movement to be technically notable: the design presents a high-frequency movement in a straightforward time display.

Zenith’s pressroom lists CHF 9,900 for the cited date references. That is the brand’s listed figure at the page’s access time, not a promise of current availability or the price in every market. Zenith pressroom.
Why would a chronometer have no seconds hand?
Davin describes the Omega Constellation Observatory as a two-hand certified chronometer. He says the choice is tied to slimness, distinctiveness, and the watch’s connection with a testing facility; he also writes that adding a seconds hand would make it “at least 1/3 of a millimeter thicker.” That thickness rationale and the testing discussion should be understood as claims in his letter, not independently confirmed product or standards information.

In the same letter, Davin contrasts what he describes as 15 readings over 15 days for COSC and METAS with continuous sonic measurement and “some 120’000 impressions in 15 days” at Laboratoire de Précision. Those figures and comparisons are his account; they do not establish that certification systems are interchangeable or provide a verified, like-for-like standards comparison.
Can a watch have more complications and still fit the same idea?
Yes. The BA111OD Chapter 4 Infinity Flying Tourbillon takes the opposite visual route from a stripped-back two-hand watch: its listed features include a flying tourbillon, moon phase, and small seconds. The official product page describes a 41 mm stainless-steel case, hand-wound movement, 120-hour power reserve, and chronometer certification.

The WorldTempus letter prints the price as “12’2000 CHF,” an apparent formatting error. BA111OD’s product page lists CHF 12,200.00. Not by definition. Fewer displayed functions can be a deliberate choice, just as a more elaborate dial can make complications central to a watch’s identity. The useful question is what the design is trying to emphasize and whether the visible indications suit that aim.

Davin’s “soup without salt” framing captures the feeling that something expected may be missing. His examples suggest a different reading: simplifying a watch can be a design decision rather than a defect. As he concludes, “We are talking about stripping watchmaking down to the bare essentials – sometimes less is more.”
