No—you can use the core Fitbit app without a paid subscription. Fitbit Premium became Google Health Premium on May 19, 2026, and the paid tier adds coaching, deeper insights, and a changing library of workouts and mindfulness content. Whether it is worth paying depends on which extras you will use, whether your device and country are supported, and the price offered at your checkout.
What changes when you pay for Google Health Premium?
Google Health Premium is the current name for Fitbit Premium. The free app continues to offer basic health and fitness tracking, basic insights, and introductory fitness and wellness experiences. The subscription adds a broader set of tools, but availability depends on the device, country, language, and current app offering.

Paid features
Google describes Premium as including personalized weekly fitness plans created with Google Health Coach, personalized insights, and a library of workout and mindfulness content. The older Fitbit comparison chart lists examples such as Daily Readiness, expanded sleep and stress-score details, health-metrics trends, wellness reports, challenges, workouts, and mindfulness sessions. It also gives historical figures of 200+ workouts, 200+ mindfulness sessions, and 90 days of health-metrics trends. What remains free?
You do not need Premium simply to use the app’s basic tracking. If your main interest is seeing everyday activity, sleep, and other basic app data, start with the free features and check what your specific device displays before subscribing.
Do you need a Fitbit or Pixel Watch?
Yes. Google says a Fitbit or Pixel Watch is required for Premium access. Premium is also included at no extra cost for Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers, but the device requirement still applies. Check the current eligibility details in Google Health Premium subscription help before buying a separate membership.

If you do not already own a compatible Fitbit or Pixel Watch, the subscription alone will not give you access. Confirm your particular device’s compatibility in Google’s current service information rather than assuming every Fitbit product supports every feature.
How much does Fitbit Premium cost now?
The reviewed Google help information does not establish a single current standalone price for all customers. It says subscribers can choose monthly or one-year billing after an eligible trial. Prices and offers may vary by market and purchase channel, so check the amount, currency, and renewal interval displayed in your Google Health app, Google Store, or applicable app store before agreeing.

Do not rely on an old device-promotion price or a price quoted for another country as your current subscription cost. Google’s Fitbit Premium help page describes the plan and billing choices.
Who can use Google Health Premium and its coaching?
Google lists Premium coaching and Google Health Coach for users aged 18 or older who have a Fitbit or Pixel Watch. Is a Premium subscription worth it for you?
Decide based on the paid features you will actually use, not the size of the feature list. Make a short list of the Premium tools you expect to use each week, then compare that use with the recurring price shown for your account.

- Check your existing plan first if you subscribe to Google AI Pro or Ultra, since Google says Premium is included for those subscribers when they meet the device requirement.
- Use a trial carefully if one is offered and you want to test whether the extras fit your routine. Note the trial’s end date and the renewal price before starting.
Google says eligible new or returning Google Account users who update to the Google Health app are offered a three-month Premium trial. This is not universal eligibility: account status and offer terms matter, and device promotions may have different trial lengths or conditions. What happens if you cancel?
Subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled. Under Fitbit’s paid-service terms, cancellation takes effect at the end of the current subscription term; it ordinarily stops future charges rather than refunding the paid period already underway. A free trial can convert to recurring paid billing unless you cancel before it ends. Review the applicable terms at Fitbit Terms for Paid Services.
Cancel through the channel where you originally subscribed—such as your Google Account or Google Store, Apple App Store, Google Play, or another purchase channel. The route differs by seller, so use the cancellation instructions for that original channel. Google’s Fitbit Premium help page also outlines subscription management.
What are the alternatives?
The simplest alternative is the free Fitbit app, if its basic tracking meets your needs. A like-for-like comparison with another wearable or wellness subscription depends on your country’s recurring price, device compatibility, which tracking tools remain free, the coaching or content you would use, and each plan’s trial and cancellation terms. The available information does not establish that a competing subscription is better overall, so compare those details for the specific products available to you.
