There is no universal Fitbit-versus-Garmin winner: the right choice depends on the exact models and whether you want a compact everyday tracker or a watch with deeper running tools. Fitbit Charge 6 is a compact option with built-in or phone-connected GPS and sleep and wellness features. Garmin’s range includes everyday watches and running-focused models; the Forerunner 165, for example, adds GPS running features and adaptive training tools. Compare the device you might actually buy, not the brand names in the abstract.
How do Fitbit and Garmin differ?
Fitbit Charge 6 is a tracker-oriented example, while Garmin sells a wider range of watches, including everyday and running-focused models. The feature sets vary by device. Google’s inventory lists GPS, activity, sleep, and wellness functions for Charge 6, while Garmin’s comparison shows that features such as mapping and multi-band GPS are limited to particular models. Google’s Fitbit and Pixel Watch feature inventory and Garmin’s product comparison are useful starting points for checking a specific model.

| Sleep and wellness | Charge 6 lists sleep stages and score, plus several health metrics. | Garmin describes sleep score and stages, HRV status, and stress tracking for Forerunner 165. | Similar feature names do not establish equivalent measurement accuracy. |
Which is better for running?
If you want a running watch with structured guidance, Garmin Forerunner 165 is the clearer example in this comparison. Garmin describes adaptive training plans, suggested workouts, running metrics, and recovery insights for this model. Higher-tier Garmin models add capabilities such as multi-band GPS, maps, and training readiness, but those features depend on the model. See Garmin’s Forerunner 165 Series announcement and verify the feature list for the watch you are considering.

Does Fitbit or Garmin have better GPS?
The available official product information does not establish that one brand is generally more accurate. The practical difference is often how a specific device obtains GPS data. Charge 6 offers Dynamic, built-in, and phone GPS modes. In Dynamic mode, it uses phone GPS when the phone is carried, and built-in GPS when the phone is nearby but stationary at workout start. Built-in GPS records route, pace, distance, and related workout statistics, but can reduce tracker battery life; phone GPS can help preserve it. Details are in Google’s GPS guidance for Fitbit devices and Pixel Watch.
Garmin’s GPS capabilities also vary by model: its product comparison lists multi-band GPS on some Forerunner watches, but not all. Satellite signal conditions matter regardless of brand. Google notes that a weak signal can affect GPS route and activity data, and that GPS needs a direct path to satellites. Wear and profile settings can also affect Fitbit activity calculations. For more, see Google’s GPS guidance, Google’s explanation of Fitbit accuracy, and how Fitbit calculates daily activity.

How long does the battery last?
Battery estimates are useful only when the mode and conditions match. Garmin states that Forerunner 165 lasts up to 11 days in smartwatch mode and up to 19 hours in GPS mode. These are Garmin’s manufacturer estimates from its February 20, 2024 announcement; settings and use affect battery life. The official materials cited here do not provide a matched current Charge 6 figure, so they do not support a numeric battery-life winner between the brands.

What about sleep tracking and wellness features?
Google’s inventory for Charge 6 lists sleep logging, sleep stages and score, stress-management features, heart rate, resting heart rate, HRV, breathing rate, SpO2, and skin-temperature variation. Garmin’s Forerunner 165 announcement describes sleep score and stages, HRV status, and stress tracking. These are manufacturer-described features, not proof that the devices measure the same thing in the same way or with equal accuracy. Availability and behavior can also vary by feature and context.
How have Fitbit’s app and membership names changed?
Google says the Fitbit app became the Google Health app starting May 19, 2026, and that Fitbit Premium becomes Google Health Premium in the redesigned experience for subscribers in supported countries. Google also describes changes to how fitness and sleep information and metrics are presented. Availability and membership terms can vary by country, so check Google’s current information about the redesigned Google Health app for your region before choosing based on an app feature or paid plan.

How should you choose between a Fitbit and a Garmin?
- Choose Charge 6 as a candidate if you want a compact tracker and value its listed everyday activity, sleep, wellness, and GPS features.
- Choose Forerunner 165 as a candidate if running is central and you want Garmin’s described adaptive plans, suggested workouts, running metrics, and recovery insights.
- Look at a higher-tier Garmin model if you specifically need a feature such as multi-band GPS, built-in mapping, or training readiness; check that it is included on the exact model.
- Compare GPS modes and battery needs if you record outdoor workouts often, especially if you do not want to carry a phone.
- Check the app and membership in your country if sleep presentation, paid features, or account experience will influence your decision.
There is no head-to-head evidence here establishing a general winner for GPS, heart-rate, step, or sleep accuracy. Treat product specifications as descriptions from their manufacturers, and choose based on the model-specific features that fit your routine.
