If your Fitbit stats are stale, a manual sync fails, notifications stop arriving, or the tracker says your phone is disconnected, start with Bluetooth, internet access, and proximity. Then check for competing connections, restart and update your devices, and verify the permissions for your phone’s operating system. Save removing and setting up the Fitbit again for last.
Google’s help center now refers to the companion app as Google Health. The steps below use that current name where useful; the familiar “Fitbit app” still describes the app many Fitbit users are looking for.

Start with the phone and connection
A stale dashboard or failed manual sync can mean the tracker is no longer communicating with the phone it is paired to. Check the basic connection before changing settings or removing the device.
- Bring the Fitbit close to the phone it is paired with.
- Make sure Bluetooth is on and the phone has internet access through Wi-Fi or cellular data.
- Open Google Health (formerly the Fitbit app) on that phone and try a manual sync.
The app needs internet access to sync. If you have more than one phone or tablet nearby that uses the same account, or several Bluetooth devices connected, temporarily reduce those competing connections before retrying.

Rule out other phones and Bluetooth connections
A Fitbit may be paired with another nearby phone or tablet, which can make it harder to tell which device is managing the connection. Google’s iPhone and Android guidance recommends checking for the app or pairing on other nearby devices using the same account.
- Check nearby phones and tablets signed into your account for the Google Health app or a Fitbit pairing.
- If syncing still fails, temporarily turn Bluetooth off on other nearby devices, then retry from the phone you intend to use.
Restore any connections you turned off once you have identified whether they were contributing to the problem.

Restart the Fitbit, phone, and app
Restarting is less disruptive than rebuilding the pairing. Restart the Fitbit using the instructions for your exact model, then restart the phone and try syncing again. If the app is still unresponsive, force-quit it and reopen it.
Fitbit restart procedures differ by model. Use Google’s Fitbit device troubleshooting and restart guidance rather than assuming one model’s button sequence applies to another.

Install available updates
Check for available updates to the phone’s operating system, Google Health app, and Fitbit device. Keep the app available in the background while a sync or device update is underway.
Ordinary syncing and firmware updating are different tasks. If the problem occurs while a Fitbit update is downloading or installing, follow Google’s separate troubleshooting steps for updating a Fitbit device; an update that fails or stops may need more than the basic sync checks.

Check permissions for your phone
Permission requirements differ by platform. Follow the branch for the phone paired to your Fitbit; do not apply one platform’s permission list to the other. Settings names can vary with operating-system version.

iPhone or iPad
In Settings, check that Google Health has access to Bluetooth, Background App Refresh, and Cellular Data. Google’s iPhone and iPad Fitbit sync guidance also covers checking for another nearby phone or tablet using the same account.

Android
Check that Google Health has Location permission and, on Android 12 or later, Nearby devices permission. Use Google’s Android Fitbit sync guidance for the relevant setup and troubleshooting steps; Android menu labels can differ by version.
Connect the Fitbit to its charger
Google includes connecting the Fitbit to its charger in later troubleshooting steps. This is a useful check if the device is low on charge or behaving unexpectedly, but buying a replacement charger is not a general fix for Bluetooth, internet, or permission problems. Consider replacing the cable only if the one you have is missing, damaged, or failing to charge the device, and verify compatibility with the exact Fitbit model.
Remove and set up the Fitbit again only as a later step
If the simpler checks fail, Google’s advanced reconnection process removes the Fitbit from the companion app and forgets it in the phone’s Bluetooth settings before setting it up again through the app. Leftover pairing information can interfere with setup.

- In Google Health, remove the Fitbit from the account or device list using the app’s current device-management instructions.
- In the phone’s Bluetooth settings, forget the Fitbit pairing.
- Return to Google Health and set up the Fitbit through the app, following the instructions for your model.
Do not try to complete setup by pairing from the phone’s Bluetooth screen alone. If you are considering reinstalling Google Health, first check the current Google guidance for your platform. On iPhone or iPad, Google’s update troubleshooting says to forget the device in Bluetooth settings first. On Android, confirm that the phone’s operating system is supported before uninstalling; an older OS may prevent you from reinstalling the app.
When to contact Google or Fitbit support
If syncing still fails after the relevant steps, contact Google or Fitbit support. Include the exact Fitbit model, phone model and operating-system version, app version, any error text, and which troubleshooting steps you have already tried. These details help distinguish a tracker, phone, permission, or pairing issue; no single step is guaranteed to fix every cause.
