Premium is mainly a subscription for interpretation, coaching, adaptive plans, and guided content. As of May 19, 2026, Fitbit Premium is being referred to as Google Health Premium, and its main coaching feature is Google Health Coach, built with Gemini. You are paying less for extra sensor data than for help turning your data into recommendations and routines.

What you get with Fitbit free
Activity and exercise tracking
The free tier is sufficient for ordinary activity tracking. It records or displays steps, calories, distance, cardio load, and supported exercises. Compatible Fitbit devices can track a broad selection of workouts through the device’s Exercise app.
The current app uses a personalized weekly cardio target rather than relying only on the older daily-goal model. That change affects how goals are presented, not whether the underlying activity tracking is free.
Sleep tracking
Free users can see the core sleep information collected by a compatible device, including:
- Sleep score
- Total sleep duration
- Sleep schedule
- Sleep stages, when the device supports them and enough data is recorded
The important distinction is that Premium does not generally unlock the existence of your sleep record. It adds more interpretation: personalized summaries, coaching insights, sleep-goal guidance, and the ability to discuss sleep data with Google Health Coach.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHealth metrics and wellness logs
Depending on the device and region, the free Google Health experience can include heart rate, heart-rate variability, breathing rate, blood oxygen, and resting heart rate. You can also log weight, food, water, moods, and menstrual-cycle information.
These metrics are not guarantees of medical-grade measurement or diagnosis. A model may lack a particular sensor, and readings can depend on fit, wear time, software support, and local availability.
Daily Readiness is no longer a Premium-only reason to subscribe
Older Fitbit articles often describe Daily Readiness as a Premium feature. That is no longer a sound general recommendation: Daily Readiness is available to everyone using Google Health with a compatible device.
The score uses factors including heart-rate variability, resting heart rate, and recent sleep. You generally need about seven nights of wear before the app can establish an initial baseline. Free users can view the score; Premium changes what the service does with it by letting Google Health Coach use Readiness to help shape training and weekly targets.

Syncing and basic app access
Premium is not required to pair a Fitbit, sync it, or view basic data. Fitbit devices sync with the Google Health app throughout the day when they are nearby. Google lists Android 11 or later and iOS 16.4 or later for the Google Health app, along with a Google Account for setup and pairing. Check the current compatibility requirements before buying a device because phone support and app requirements can change.
If you need a compatible wearable rather than a subscription, a device such as the Fitbit Charge 6 fitness tracker is one example of the hardware used with the Google Health ecosystem. Buying a Fitbit does not, by itself, make Premium necessary.
What Google Health Premium adds
Google Health Coach
The central Premium benefit is Google Health Coach, built with Gemini. It can use information from a paired Fitbit or Pixel Watch, your profile, and connected third-party apps to provide personalized guidance. Depending on availability and the feature version, that can include:

- Answers to general wellness questions
- Fitness and sleep trend analysis
- Morning, post-workout, or evening-style feedback
- Personalized messages and reminders
- Suggestions based on health metrics and recent activity
This is an informational coaching feature, not a clinician. It should not be used to diagnose a condition, interpret an emergency, replace professional medical advice, or decide whether to start or stop treatment.
Adaptive fitness plans and workouts
Premium is more compelling if you want the app to create a plan instead of merely showing charts. You can use the Coach to create personalized weekly fitness plans based on goals, current circumstances, challenges, and progress. Recommendations can be adjusted, including targets such as repetitions, sets, or workout duration.
That makes Premium potentially useful for someone who wants a single service to combine wearable data with an evolving routine. It is less valuable if you already follow a coach, training plan, or workout app and only want to record the activity.
More detailed sleep guidance
Premium’s sleep advantage is primarily interpretation. The free tier already provides ordinary sleep tracking on supported hardware. Premium adds personalized sleep summaries, coaching insights, sleep-goal guidance, and conversations with the Coach about your sleep data.
In other words, Premium is not necessarily buying more hours of sleep data. It is buying recommendations about what the data might mean for your routine.

Proactive insights and medical-record summaries
Google also positions Premium as a way to receive proactive guidance across fitness, sleep, and health metrics. Where the relevant Google Health features are available, Premium can provide summaries of connected medical records and let you ask questions that inform deeper Coach recommendations.
Use these features as organizational and informational tools. A generated summary can be incomplete or require context, and it should not be treated as a diagnosis or a substitute for a qualified medical professional.
Workout, mindfulness, sleep, and stress content
Premium includes a content library with workout videos led by expert trainers, along with mindfulness, sleep, and stress-management material such as meditation, guided breathing, and relaxation sessions.
This benefit depends heavily on your habits. If you want one subscription that combines tracking, plans, exercise videos, and relaxation content, it may be useful. If you already use free workout videos, a separate meditation app, or a gym program, the library may not justify another recurring charge.

Some features depend on the watch or tracker
Premium does not make every Fitbit or Pixel Watch feature identical. Google’s support information, for example, identifies personalized running-form insights for Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Watch 4. Other features can depend on model, language, country, and app version.
Do not subscribe on the assumption that Premium adds a sensor, improves sensor accuracy, or gives every device the same measurements. The sourced benefits are coaching, interpretation, planning, and content—not more accurate hardware.

Who should skip Fitbit Premium?
You should probably stay with the free tier if your main needs are:
- Counting steps and tracking distance or calories
- Recording workouts
- Reviewing ordinary sleep information
- Checking supported heart and health metrics
- Logging food, water, weight, moods, or cycles
- Viewing Daily Readiness
- Syncing a Fitbit and using the basic app
Premium is also a poor fit if you do not want AI-generated coaching, rarely review recommendations, already use another training or mindfulness service, or prefer to set your own targets.

Premium is easier to justify when you want several of these things at once:
- An adaptive weekly fitness plan based on your progress and circumstances
- Workout recommendations that respond to your goals
- Sleep coaching rather than sleep charts alone
- Proactive interpretation of trends in activity, sleep, and health metrics
- One integrated library of workouts, meditation, breathing, and relaxation sessions
- A way to ask Google Health Coach questions about your data
- Help organizing or summarizing connected medical information, with appropriate caution
The value is greatest for people who will actually follow the plans and return to the recommendations. If you only want the watch to collect data, the free experience does most of the important work.
Price, trial, and cancellation details
Google’s U.S. Google Store page lists Google Health Premium from $9.99. That starting price should not be treated as a universal final cost: billing cadence, taxes, country, promotions, and checkout terms can vary. Confirm the price shown for your account before subscribing.
Google says new or returning Google Account users may be offered a three-month trial after updating to the Google Health app. Trial eligibility and exact terms can vary. Subscriptions automatically renew until canceled, so cancel before the trial ends if you do not want the applicable recurring charge.

Google Health Premium is included at no additional cost for subscribers to Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra in supported locations. You still need a Fitbit or Pixel Watch to access the Fitbit and Google Health features, and the inclusion may depend on country and current plan terms.
If you already pay for an eligible Google AI plan, check its benefits and the Google Health activation path before purchasing a separate Premium subscription. Do not upgrade to a more expensive AI plan solely for this inclusion without comparing the total cost and deciding whether you need the plan’s other benefits.
Eligibility and availability limits
Google Health Coach and Premium coaching features require a Fitbit or Pixel Watch, an eligible country, and an age of over 18. The United States is included in Google’s current availability information, but availability can change. Some features may initially be English-only or limited by device, language, country, or app version.

The May 19, 2026 naming change also matters when searching for help or subscription settings: older documentation may say Fitbit Premium, while the current product name is Google Health Premium. The comparison remains the same in practical terms—free tracking versus paid coaching and content—but labels and menus may change during the transition.
Our verdict
Start with Fitbit free. For most owners, it provides the core value of a Fitbit: activity, exercise, sleep, supported health metrics, wellness logs, syncing, and Daily Readiness. You do not need Premium to make a Fitbit useful.
Choose Google Health Premium only if you specifically want Google Health Coach, adaptive training plans, personalized sleep guidance, proactive data interpretation, or the included workout and mindfulness content. Try the free tier first, use the trial if one is offered, and check whether Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra already includes the subscription. Premium is a coaching upgrade—not a prerequisite for basic Fitbit tracking.
