Yes. The Garmin vívoactive 5 works with an iPhone, and Garmin’s setup instructions for this model pair it through the Garmin Connect app. Connect is needed for pairing and syncing; other connected features also depend on Bluetooth and, depending on what you use, iPhone notification, location, or background-refresh settings. One notable iOS limitation: you can’t reply to SMS messages from the watch.
What works with an iPhone—and what needs a connection?
The key distinction is between functions the watch performs itself and services that rely on the phone. The vívoactive 5 can record and display watch-based information without every feature requiring a live iPhone connection. Pairing, syncing and certain connected services rely on Garmin Connect and Bluetooth; notifications and other iPhone-mediated features also depend on iOS settings.

| Function | What it depends on |
|---|---|
| Pairing and syncing | Garmin Connect and Bluetooth. Garmin says Bluetooth is required to sync a Garmin device with the Connect app. |
| Phone notifications | Bluetooth connection plus the relevant iPhone notification settings and permissions. |
| Local weather and connected GPS | Location permission, where required for those location-linked features. |
| Music controls | A connection to Garmin Connect; the widget controls the last media player used on the iPhone. |
| Replying to SMS | Unavailable on iOS when a Garmin watch is paired with an iPhone. |
This is not the same as saying Garmin Connect must remain open at all times for every watch function. Requirements vary by feature. Garmin’s warning about force-closing Connect applies specifically to app version 5.20 or older, so it should not be treated as a universal description of current app behavior.
How to pair the vívoactive 5 with an iPhone
- Install Garmin Connect from the iPhone’s App Store.
- Open Garmin Connect and start the vívoactive 5’s first-time setup in the app. Garmin’s model-specific instructions direct users to scan the watch’s setup code and complete Bluetooth pairing through Connect.
- Allow Bluetooth access when prompted so the app can sync with the watch.
- Choose which iPhone apps may send notifications to the watch, then configure their notification delivery in iOS.
Use Garmin’s vívoactive 5 iOS pairing instructions if you need the model-specific setup flow.

Set up iPhone notifications correctly
Notification mirroring requires more than pairing. Garmin’s guidance for iOS 16 or later says to enable notifications for each app you want on the watch and allow delivery to Notification Center. To see message previews, set iOS previews to Always or When Unlocked. If an app’s alerts are not reaching the watch, check both that app’s iPhone notification settings and Garmin Connect’s access.
Even when alerts appear, the experience is not full messaging control: Garmin says SMS replies from a watch are not available on iOS. See Garmin’s guides to choosing which notifications display and interacting with notifications on Garmin watches.

What Garmin Connect and iPhone permissions affect
Bluetooth: pairing and syncing
Bluetooth is the link between the iPhone and watch for syncing through Garmin Connect. Garmin also identifies it as necessary for Find My Phone and Bluetooth connection alerts. If syncing or these connected features stop working, check that Bluetooth is enabled and that Connect has Bluetooth access.

Background App Refresh: background updates
Garmin lists Background App Refresh among the iOS permissions relevant to Connect background content updates. If information is not refreshing while the app is in the background, check that setting. Garmin’s separate force-close troubleshooting notice is explicitly limited to app version 5.20 or older, so its broader list of affected functions may not describe current versions.
Garmin’s iOS permissions guide describes the permissions and their roles.

Music controls are not the same as music storage
The music control widget on the vívoactive 5 can control the last media player used on the iPhone while the watch is connected to Garmin Connect. That phone-control feature is distinct from the watch’s separate ability to store and play music; controlling an iPhone player does not mean the audio is stored on the watch. Garmin explains the widget in its music controls guide for the vívoactive 5.

Garmin’s regional compatibility pages do not give a consistent minimum: one current regional page lists iOS 18 or later, while another lists iOS 15 or later. Those conflicting listings do not establish a universal minimum. Before relying on an older iPhone, check the Garmin Connect listing in your local App Store and Garmin’s compatibility page. The regional page with the older stated minimum is Garmin’s India compatibility listing.

If a connected feature stops working
- Pairing or syncing fails: confirm Garmin Connect is installed, Bluetooth is on, and Connect has Bluetooth access; start or complete pairing in Connect.
- Notifications are missing: check iPhone notification permissions for the desired apps, Notification Center delivery, and Connect’s notification access.
- Message previews are hidden: review the iOS preview setting and choose Always or When Unlocked if you want previews.
- Weather or connected GPS lacks location: review Connect’s location permission.
- Background content is stale: check Background App Refresh. Garmin’s force-close advice for older app versions should not be assumed to describe current behavior.
