It has an unusually intricate watch crystal, but there is no evidence to establish it as the most complicated ever. The Prokop & Brož Spiral 85 l.e. uses angled, metalized glass layers above part of its dial—a striking construction that the maker calls the most technically difficult part of producing the watch. No source here compares it with watch crystals across the industry or defines a way to rank their complexity.
What makes the Spiral’s crystal unusual?
A conventional watch crystal is usually a single piece of sapphire, according to Fratello Watches. The Spiral instead places a layered glass assembly over the lower part of its dial. Its angled, reflective surface partly obscures the display and changes how light appears across the watch.
Prokop & Brož says the assembly contains twenty glass components, glued together in a vacuum with adhesive chosen to have a refractive index matching ordinary clear glass, limiting visible distortion. Fratello’s June 2020 account describes a sandwich of twenty-two components. The sources do not explain the discrepancy, so the counts should be treated as different descriptions rather than reconciled into one figure.
How is the glass assembly made?
The maker says the layered glass is inclined at 51 degrees toward six o’clock. It says that angle was selected to achieve the desired light and reflection effect; that is the maker’s design explanation, not an independently verified account of the optical result. Prokop & Brož credits Václav Cigler with the initial idea and says Jan Prokop and Petr Kubík developed it. The maker describes making the sandwiched, metalized glass as the most difficult technical and technological part of producing the Spiral.

Fratello’s 2020 article gives a more detailed manufacturing account: calibrated laboratory glass plates are metalized, glued, then diamond-cut and polished. It reports that the process takes about four months and that roughly 150–200 crystals are made to select one acceptable final piece. These are figures reported by Fratello at the time, not independently audited production data.
How does the crystal relate to the watch’s display?
The glass is part of an artistic design built around time and duality, not simply a protective cover. Prokop & Brož describes a dial disc that moves beneath a fixed reading pointer to show time on a 24-hour display. The layered glass covers part of that display, adding a reflective, partly concealed visual effect. Fratello’s 2020 specifications identify the manual-winding movement as the PB11 HS.

Does “most complicated ever” hold up?
The Spiral’s construction is clearly more involved than the single-piece crystal described as typical by Fratello, and its reported production process is demanding. But “most complicated ever” is a ranking claim. The maker and the independent coverage cited here do not provide a survey of other watch crystals, a shared measure of complexity, or evidence that the Spiral outranks every other design. The defensible conclusion is that it is an unusually elaborate crystal—not that it is proven to be the most complicated ever.

Prokop & Brož describes the Spiral as an 85-piece limited edition. Fratello’s June 2020 report listed a 43.5 mm stainless-steel case, 10 ATM water resistance and a €17,000 price, and said pieces were custom made.
