No official evidence establishes that the Rado Captain Cook Bronze will stay golden. Rado identifies the case, bezel and crown of its 2020 Captain Cook Bronze Automatic as CuAl bronze, but does not describe a special anti-patina treatment or publish measurements showing how the alloy’s color changes over time. The watch’s gold-toned look is not a promise of permanent color.
Does the Rado Captain Cook Bronze stay golden?
That claim needs qualification. Rado’s February 2020 press release calls the case, turning bezel and screw-down crown “bronze (CuAl),” but it does not say CuAl keeps the watch golden. Nor does it explain a coating or other treatment intended to prevent patina. The release’s phrase “Designed to look good for life” is promotional language, not evidence of color retention. Rado’s 2020 release provides specifications, not a long-term patina test.
Bronze can develop a surface patina, but the official materials reviewed here do not establish how quickly this particular alloy changes, what color it will take, or whether its appearance will remain uniform. Rado does not provide alloy percentages or quantified comparisons with other bronze watch alloys in these sources. So the defensible answer is: the watch is made with CuAl bronze, but a lasting golden color is not substantiated.
What is bronze on the 2020 Captain Cook?
Rado’s February 2020 specification describes reference 763.0504.3.131. Its bronze components are the brushed case, turning bezel and screw-down crown. The bezel has a polished green high-tech ceramic insert; the screw-down case back is circular-brushed titanium. This construction pairs bronze-colored metal with green and titanium, rather than making every visible component bronze. Rado’s press release names CuAl but does not give a fuller alloy formula or surface-treatment details.

What the official specifications say
| Specification | 2020 reference 763.0504.3.131 | US reference R32504317 |
|---|---|---|
| Source and scope | Rado Switzerland, February 2020 press release | Rado US product listing, accessed October 8, 2026 |
| Case size | 42.0 × 48.6 × 12.5 mm | 42 mm case diameter |
| Movement | ETA C07 automatic | Caliber R763 automatic |
| Power reserve | Up to 80 hours | 80 hours |
| Water resistance | 30 bar (300 m) | Not stated on the cited listing |
| Strap | Green leather, with a bronze CuAl pin buckle | Green fabric/NATO strap |
| Bezel | CuAl bronze turning bezel with polished green high-tech ceramic insert | Bronze and high-tech ceramic are listed; the cited page does not specify insert finish |
These are separate references and configurations, not interchangeable descriptions of one watch. Rado’s current US page for R32504317 specifies caliber R763 and a NATO fabric strap; those details should not be substituted for the ETA C07 and leather strap listed for the 2020 763.0504.3.131. See Rado US’s R32504317 listing for that reference.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Will the bronze case develop a patina?
It may change in appearance as the bronze surface ages, but the available official information does not establish the timing or the result for this watch. Neither Rado source reports a measured patina rate, names an independent color-retention study, or quantifies how CuAl compares with other bronze alloys. A precise promise—such as that it will stay golden, or that it will patinate at a particular rate—would go beyond the evidence.

What to consider if you want a bronze watch
- Expect the possibility of change. If maintaining a consistent gold-toned appearance is essential, do not treat the CuAl label as a guarantee of color stability.
- Check the exact reference. The 2020 press-release model and the current US R32504317 listing differ in their stated movement and strap configurations.
- Separate specifications from wear results. Rado’s stated dimensions, power reserve and water resistance describe the 2020 reference; they do not establish how its bronze will look after months or years of wear.
