The Grand Seiko SBGE253, SBGE255, and SBGE257 share the same core specification: a 40.5 mm stainless-steel case, ceramic bezel, and Spring Drive 9R66 GMT movement. The main visible difference is the colorway: black and red, blue and light blue, or green and yellow-gold. Choosing among them comes down chiefly to which dial and GMT-hand combination you prefer, how the 14.7 mm case suits your wrist and cuff, and how each looks in person.
What’s the difference between the SBGE253, SBGE255, and SBGE257?
Grand Seiko presents these as three color versions of the same Sport Collection Spring Drive GMT design. Fratello reviewer Balazs Ferenczi, writing about the trio on September 23, 2020, likewise described them as differing by color while sharing the general design and size. That is a reviewer’s characterization; the specifications below are from Grand Seiko.
| Reference | Dial and bezel | GMT hand |
|---|---|---|
| SBGE253 | Black | Red |
| SBGE255 | Blue | Light blue |
| SBGE257 | Green | Yellow or gold-tone |
Grand Seiko says the SBGE257’s green dial is inspired by Japanese moss; that is design context, not a performance distinction. Color and contrast are the practical visual differences established by the product presentations. A listing photo cannot establish how a dial or hand will look in changing light, so compare reliable photographs under different conditions or view the watches in person if legibility is a deciding factor.
Shared specifications
Grand Seiko’s official product pages list the following specifications for all three references. These are manufacturer figures, not independent measurements or results from testing by this writer.

How do the watches wear, and is the SBGE257 too thick for a cuff?
The 40.5 mm diameter is only part of the fit picture. The 48.7 mm lug-to-lug measurement indicates how far the watch spans across the wrist, while its 14.7 mm thickness may affect how it slips under a shirt cuff. Monochrome’s reviewer discusses the proportions and wrist presence, but comfort depends on wrist shape, the fit of the strap or bracelet, and personal preference. No single dimension can guarantee that a particular wearer will find it comfortable or cuff-friendly.

Use the lug-to-lug and thickness measurements alongside your own wrist and clothing, rather than judging from diameter alone. If possible, try the watch on; otherwise, compare those dimensions with a watch you already know fits you. The available evidence does not establish that one color reference wears differently from the other two.
What does the 9R66 Spring Drive GMT offer for travel?
Grand Seiko lists a 24-hour hand for dual-time display and calendar-linked time-difference adjustment on these watches. The 9R66 is a self-winding movement that can also be wound manually. Grand Seiko describes Spring Drive as a mechanism that “combines the motive force of a mainspring with the high precision of a quartz watch.” That is the manufacturer’s explanation of its technology.

Those are official specifications; the sources cited here do not provide an independent accuracy test of these three watches. The cited specifications identify the travel functions but do not establish operating instructions for changing the time, so consult the relevant manual for the procedure.
What does the 20-bar water-resistance rating mean?
Grand Seiko lists 20 bar water resistance for each reference. Treat that as the manufacturer’s stated specification, not a guarantee about a particular watch’s current condition—especially if you are considering a used example. The rating alone also should not be read as blanket advice for every water activity. For a specific use, check Grand Seiko’s guidance and have the watch’s condition assessed as appropriate.

Can you change the strap on an SBGE255?
The official specification gives a 20 mm band width. That measurement does not by itself confirm that every 20 mm strap will fit correctly with a particular watch, end link, or clasp. Verify the strap’s construction and compatibility with the exact reference before buying; no specific third-party strap fit is established here.
