The Fitbit Versa 4 is a good Apple Watch alternative if you value long battery life, sleep and fitness tracking, and compatibility with both iPhone and Android. It is not a full replacement for Apple Watch: its app ecosystem and iPhone integration are more limited, and Bluetooth calls require your phone nearby. Think of it as a fitness-first smartwatch, not an Apple Watch in a different case.
What kind of Apple Watch alternative do you need?
“Alternative” can mean several things: a watch that tracks workouts, one that handles notifications and payments, one that fits into an iPhone ecosystem, or one that lasts longer between charges. The Versa 4 is most compelling for fitness basics, sleep tracking, and battery life. It offers useful smartwatch functions, but it does not match Apple Watch’s app breadth or deep iPhone integration.

Battery life is its clearest advantage
Google advertises 6+ days of battery life, making the Versa 4 more convenient than a watch that typically needs charging every day or two. That can make overnight wear and sleep tracking easier to maintain. The figure is a manufacturer estimate, not a guarantee: always-on display, frequent GPS workouts, screen brightness, notifications, sensor use, and battery age can all affect actual runtime. Google specifically warns that always-on display can require more frequent charging. The same product listing says a day’s charge can be obtained in 12 minutes; treat that as Google’s charging claim, with actual results dependent on use and conditions. Battery and charging details.
How it compares with Apple Watch
The watches overlap on everyday fitness and smartwatch basics, but they serve different priorities. Apple Watch is the more natural choice for an iPhone owner who wants Apple’s integrated services and apps. Versa 4 is a better fit for someone who prioritizes endurance between charges or wants a watch that also works with Android.
| Priority | Fitbit Versa 4 | Apple Watch |
|---|---|---|
| Battery life | Google advertises 6+ days; actual life varies with settings and use. | Generally a shorter battery-life proposition; exact runtime depends on model and use. |
| Phone compatibility | Android and iPhone, subject to Google’s stated OS requirements. | Primarily for iPhone users. |
| Fitness and sleep | Activity, workout, GPS, and sleep tracking; longer battery life can simplify overnight wear. | Strong fitness features; charging schedule may affect overnight use. |
| Apps and iPhone integration | More limited app ecosystem and less native iPhone integration. | Broader app ecosystem and tighter integration with Apple services. |
| Payments and assistant | Google Wallet and Alexa. | Apple Pay and Siri. |
| Calls | Bluetooth calling with the phone nearby. | Cellular independence is available on cellular models; model and plan matter. |
| US price in the cited listing | $199.95 on Google Store US, August 16, 2026; three-month Premium trial included. | Varies by model and configuration; no current price established here. |
“Works with iPhone” does not mean the Versa 4 duplicates Apple Watch’s native Apple Health, Apple Pay, iMessage, Siri, or broader ecosystem experience. Notifications and their available controls can vary by phone, country, operating system, and app version. Google’s Bluetooth calling description also does not establish cellular independence for the Versa 4.
Fitness, GPS, sleep, and wellness: what to expect
Workouts and GPS
The Versa 4’s built-in GPS can record outdoor pace and distance without carrying a phone. Google lists more than 40 exercise modes, including running, cycling, weights, yoga, and kayaking. That is useful for casual workouts and general activity, but built-in GPS alone does not establish class-leading accuracy. Reviews have raised concerns about fitness accuracy and the watch’s limited smartwatch functionality compared with Apple Watch and Garmin devices. TechRadar’s Versa 4 review and Tech Advisor’s review discuss those limitations. Serious runners and multisport athletes should compare current, specific models before buying.
Sleep and recovery
The watch tracks sleep duration and stages and offers sleep and wellness metrics such as resting heart rate, HRV, breathing rate, SpO2, stress-related measures, and Daily Readiness Score. Google says Daily Readiness uses recent activity, sleep, and HRV to estimate whether to exercise or prioritize recovery. These are trend and wellness tools—not diagnoses, proof of health, or substitutes for clinical testing. Google explicitly says SpO2 and skin-temperature information is not intended to diagnose or treat medical conditions. Google’s specifications and health-feature qualifications.
Google Health and the Premium subscription
Fitbit’s app became the Google Health app beginning May 19, 2026, and Fitbit Premium was renamed Google Health Premium. A Google account and the Google Health app are part of the current experience. Google’s transition information.
Core activity, sleep, health, and wellness tracking is available through Google Health with a compatible wearable. Premium adds features Google describes as including Google Health Coach powered by Gemini, adaptive fitness plans, detailed sleep insights, proactive health insights, workout and mindfulness content, personalized coaching, and medical-record summaries. Google’s US Premium page displays pricing “from $9.99”; confirm the billing period, country availability, and checkout terms for your account. The Versa 4 listing currently includes three months, not a permanent subscription. Google Health Premium details.

Google says Premium coaching availability is subject to age, device, and supported-country restrictions. Alexa also has a practical dependency: Google says the Google Health app must be running in the phone’s background. Alexa setup requirements.
Compatibility and everyday smartwatch limits
Google’s stated requirements are Android 11.0 or newer, or iOS 16.4 or newer, plus Bluetooth Low Energy, internet access for syncing, a Google account, and the Google Health app. Older phones may not support setup or all notification features. Device requirements.
Maps, Wallet, Alexa, alarms, weather, notifications, and phone-nearby calls cover common needs. However, the Versa 4 has a smaller app ecosystem than Apple Watch and is not the choice for a wrist-first productivity setup, broad third-party apps, or cellular independence. Google’s current product materials do not establish a cellular Versa 4 option.

Google still lists the Versa 4 for sale, but it is a smartwatch design launched in 2022, not Google’s newest wearable platform. Google’s current lineup includes Pixel Watch products alongside Fitbit devices. That makes the Versa 4 an older Fitbit-branded option in a wearable lineup increasingly centered on Pixel Watch; no specific end-of-support date is established here. Who should buy the Fitbit Versa 4?
- Battery-conscious iPhone owner: You want workout and sleep tracking without charging every day, and accept less Apple integration.
- Android user seeking a simple smartwatch: You want fitness features, notifications, Wallet, Maps, and a watch that is not tied to Apple’s ecosystem.
- Casual runner or active walker: Built-in GPS and exercise modes meet your needs, and you do not require advanced training analytics.
- Sleep tracker: Longer advertised battery life makes overnight wear easier to fit into a routine.
- Buyer comfortable with Google services: You are willing to use Google Health and can decide whether Premium’s coaching is worth its ongoing cost.
Who should skip it?
- Apple ecosystem loyalists: Choose Apple Watch if native iPhone integration and its app ecosystem matter most.
- Cellular-watch shoppers: The Versa 4’s Bluetooth calls require a nearby phone.
- App-heavy smartwatch users: Its app and productivity experience is more limited.
- Serious athletes: Compare a specific Garmin or other sport-focused model for training load, structured workouts, and multisport analysis.
- Subscription-averse buyers: Core tracking remains a use case, but deeper coaching and insights are part of Premium’s pitch.
- Buyers seeking medical monitoring or emergency functions: Do not treat its wellness metrics as medical or safety-equivalent monitoring.
Alternatives to consider
| Alternative | Consider it if… | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel Watch | You want Google’s fuller, more current smartwatch platform. | It may be less attractive if maximum battery life is your priority; compare the specific model. |
| Fitbit Charge 6 | You want a smaller, lighter Fitbit tracker and care more about fitness than a traditional smartwatch look. | Smaller display and less smartwatch-like design. |
| Garmin | You prioritize serious running, multisport training, and sports analytics. | Models vary substantially, and the experience is more training-oriented than a general-purpose smartwatch. |
| Samsung Galaxy Watch | You use Android, especially a Samsung phone, and want a fuller Wear OS smartwatch. | Battery life is generally less compelling than the Versa 4; some health features depend on phone and region. |
| Apple Watch SE | You have an iPhone and want Apple integration, apps, payments, and safety features at a lower entry point than higher-end Apple Watch models. | iPhone-only and more frequent charging may complicate sleep tracking. |
