One Rolex Oyster has a clear, museum-documented connection to a named WWII pilot: Flight Lieutenant Keith William “Bluey” Truscott of the Royal Australian Air Force. The Tudor story is less certain. Tudor’s own chronology places the company’s creation in March 1946, after the war, while collector reporting describes engraved Canadian naval-reserve Tudor Oysters without establishing whether they were officially issued or privately bought.
Did Rolex watches see action in WWII?
Yes. The strongest specific example is a 1930s Rolex Oyster Chronometer, reference 3116, cataloged by the Australian War Memorial as belonging to Truscott, a pilot with 452 Squadron, RAAF. The museum records that on 7 November 1941 he bailed out of his Spitfire into the English Channel. Immersion ruined the watch.
The same collection record says a replacement Rolex was later supplied through a London jeweller after funds were raised by Lord Somers’ Camp and Power House. That is evidence of one documented wartime association, not proof that reference 3116—or Rolex Oysters generally—was standard military issue. Australian War Memorial collection record
What made the Rolex Oyster an early wartime watch?
Rolex dates the Oyster’s introduction to 1926, describing it as a waterproof and dustproof wristwatch. The company dates its patented self-winding Perpetual rotor to 1931. Both developments predated Truscott’s watch and the 1941 incident. Rolex Oyster history

In 1948, Hans Wilsdorf described Oysters as having endured conditions ranging from Everest and deserts to jungles and Arctic cold “without ever altering the precision of their movement.” That company statement captures the durability image Rolex cultivated; it does not establish that all Oyster watches were invulnerable. Truscott’s damaged watch is a reminder that a waterproof case was not protection against every circumstance, particularly a prolonged immersion after an aircraft bailout.
Were Tudor Oyster watches worn in WWII?
There are reports of Tudor Oysters associated with Canadian naval reservists, but the evidence cited here does not establish that they were official wartime issue. Fratello’s 10 February 2024 article describes engraved Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve (RCNVR) examples, often marked “Oyster” or “Oyster Raleigh.” It says the watches may have been acquired by the Navy for officers or bought and engraved by the officers themselves; the purchase-versus-issue history remains unclear. An Oyster case or naval-style engraving alone cannot settle whether an individual watch was government-issued, privately purchased, or worn on a particular wartime mission. The RCNVR examples are a suggestive collector-reported connection, not evidence of a standardized Tudor military supply program.
Where Tudor fits in the wartime chronology
Tudor’s official history says Montres TUDOR S.A. was created by Hans Wilsdorf on 6 March 1946, just after WWII. Wilsdorf described the aim as making a watch that agents could sell at a more modest price than Rolex while meeting Rolex’s standard of dependability. This places Tudor’s corporate beginning after the war, although it does not by itself resolve the history of any individual watch bearing a Tudor name.

- Tudor Royal Automatic Silver Dial Men's 41 mm Watch M28603-0001
In its 1947 chronology, Tudor presents Oyster reference 4463. The company describes a 34 mm waterproof Oyster case, luminous markers and hands, a red seconds hand, screw-down caseback, mechanical Calibre 59, and a riveted Oyster-type crown. This is a postwar Tudor Oyster, not proof that the model served during WWII. Tudor’s official history, 1926–1949

For a specific watch, keep the object’s age, its markings, its ownership history, and its military status as separate questions. A period-correct-looking watch may be old without having documented wartime provenance.

- Date and chronology: Check whether the claimed model and company timeline fit the period. Tudor’s official account places the company’s creation in 1946 and reference 4463 in its 1947 chronology.
- Dial and case markings: Record the exact wording and location of engravings. “Oyster,” “Oyster Raleigh,” or a naval-reserve marking can be relevant clues, but none independently proves official issue.
- Documented provenance: Look for a credible record linking that particular watch to a named person or event. The Australian War Memorial record supports Truscott’s reference 3116 association; it does not authenticate unrelated watches offered for sale.
- Issue versus personal purchase: Seek evidence specific to the watch and its owner. The available report on RCNVR-engraved Tudor Oysters leaves open whether the watches were supplied by the Navy or purchased and engraved by officers.
The documented history supports a named Rolex Oyster connection to WWII and a qualified, unresolved Tudor connection through reported Canadian naval-reserve examples. It does not establish how many servicemen wore either brand or that a particular modern vintage listing has wartime provenance.
