eBay Australia is extending its Authenticity Guarantee to eligible watches, and it is pointing to its own research showing that younger Australians are more interested in analogue timepieces. According to Christopher Kelly’s report in Ragtrader on 8 October 2026, the company is positioning physical authentication as the answer to the trust gap that keeps some buyers away from pre-owned luxury watches. Every survey figure below comes from eBay Australia and is reported as company data. The report does not give the sample size, fieldwork dates or methodology behind the survey, so these numbers describe what eBay says its respondents think, not verified national behaviour.
What eBay Australia says younger buyers want from analogue watches
The headline figure is that 30% of Australians aged 25 to 34 say they are more interested in owning or wearing an analogue watch than they were two to three years ago. The report does not say how the comparison period was measured, so read it as a self-reported change in interest rather than a sales trend.
Watches as a style statement
Among Gen Z respondents who are interested in analogue watches, 47% reportedly see them as a fashion statement tied to personal style and identity. That framing matters for the way the category is marketed: buyers are choosing a watch to say something about themselves, which makes design, case size and strap choice part of the decision rather than an afterthought.
Nostalgia, heritage and time without a phone
Among potential analogue-watch purchasers, 36% cite nostalgia and heritage as part of the appeal. Another 20% value being able to check the time without reaching for a phone or receiving smartwatch notifications. Those two reasons point in different directions. One is about the past and the object’s history; the other is about stepping back from a device that is always on. Both are reasons a smartwatch does not replace.

eBay Australia’s country manager, Alaister Low, framed the finding this way in the report: “What’s interesting is that the generation most surrounded by smart technology is also finding new reasons to embrace analogue.” He added that “a watch can be about style and identity, but it can also carry a story, a memory or a connection to another person or moment in time.” These are company statements about the trend, not independent findings.
What is actually selling on eBay Australia
eBay Australia also reports platform activity for the previous 12 months. These are marketplace figures from one platform, so they show what eBay shoppers searched for and bought there, not what the broader Australian watch market looks like.
- Leading search term: “Vintage Watch” was the top eBay Australia watch search, ahead of “Omega Watch” and “Cartier Watch”.
- Leading model queries: the Omega Seamaster was the top specific model search, followed by the Cartier Tank and the Omega Speedmaster.
- Average daily sales: the report states an average of one Omega Seamaster and around six Seiko watches sold per day on the platform.
The mix of search terms suggests that buyers are looking at pre-owned and vintage pieces as much as at new releases. The Seiko figure is worth noticing because it sits well below the luxury names in search terms but ahead of them on reported daily sales volume, which is a reminder that search interest and sales volume do not always move together.

Why buyers hesitate before buying a pre-owned luxury watch
The report’s most useful section for buyers is about trust. eBay Australia’s research found that 53% of Australians would hesitate to buy a high-value pre-owned luxury item online because of counterfeit concerns. A further 40% say they are not confident identifying a counterfeit luxury item without expert help.

The report says 67% of respondents did not know that a watch they believed genuine could contain replacement, modified or non-original components. Separately, 30% said concerns about modified or non-genuine internal parts would make them hesitant to buy a high-value pre-owned luxury item online.
On the other side of the same survey, 44% said physical verification through an Authenticity Guarantee would make them more likely to buy a pre-owned luxury watch online. Also, 27% said they would gladly pay more for a verified authentic pre-owned item, rising to 42% among 25 to 34-year-olds. Those are stated willingness figures, and the report does not show what people actually paid.

Lauren Baker, authentication operations manager for Australia and Japan, described the programme’s purpose in the report: “eBay’s physical authentication gives buyers added confidence, knowing an expert has carefully inspected the watch and checked it against the original listing before it reaches them.” That is the company’s own description of the service.
How the Authenticity Guarantee applies to watches
According to the report, a physical inspection covers the dial, case, bezel, crown, movement, bracelet or strap, clasp, and serial or reference details, which are checked against the listing. A watch that passes receives a digital authenticity card and is then securely packaged and shipped.
The report also states the cost structure below. Eligibility depends on the listing and price criteria, so check the current terms on eBay Australia before relying on them, because they can change.

Three limits should shape how you use these numbers.
- The survey is unpublished in detail. The sample, fieldwork dates and method are not given, so the percentages cannot be checked against an independent source.
- The marketplace figures are platform-specific. Search and sales data from eBay Australia say nothing about buying behaviour at other retailers, dealers or auction houses.
- The global context is a different dataset. eBay’s global Watchlist Trend Report describes jewellery-and-watch category listings rising nearly 20% in Q1 2026, with global watch search and sales-price changes. That is company platform data across markets and does not validate the Australian age-specific findings. eBay’s 2026 Recommerce Report draws on online surveys across multiple markets and covers secondhand shopping in general, not watches specifically.
The eBay Watchlist Trend Report and the 2026 Recommerce Report are useful background, but they should be read as separate global sources.

Buying an analogue watch: how to compare options
The report supports a few practical comparisons without declaring one option the best choice for everyone.
- New or pre-owned. Pre-owned pieces give access to vintage and discontinued models, which matches the search pattern eBay reports. New watches offer a known condition and warranty status, though the report does not compare prices between the two.
- Covered or not covered by the Authenticity Guarantee. Check whether the listing is eligible and what the checkout fee would be at your price point. A watch below AU$2,500 may need the AU$100 option; a watch below AU$1,000 is not addressed in the report.
- Style and fit. Case size, dial, strap compatibility and intended use are the factors that matter most for everyday wear. The report does not offer model comparisons or test results, so these are judgements you will need to make from the listing and your own wrist.
Before you buy a pre-owned watch on eBay Australia, look for the Authenticity Guarantee listing details, confirm the serial or reference number matches the listing, and read the seller’s description of any replacement or non-original parts. The report makes clear that a watch can be genuine and still contain such parts, so the description matters even when a watch is authenticated.
