Grand feu describes how enamel is fired onto a metal dial; cloisonné and champlevé describe how the design is built. Cloisonné uses fine wire to form cells that are filled with enamel, while champlevé uses recesses cut into the metal. A dial can combine these construction methods with grand feu firing, so the terms are not mutually exclusive.
What enamel means on a watch dial
Enamel is a glass-like material made from minerals and metal-oxide pigments. It is applied to a metal base and fused by firing in a furnace. Makers describe applying it in layers, with firing between stages, to build the dial’s surface and color. Patek Philippe’s account of enameling and Vacheron Constantin’s craft description outline these materials and processes.

How the three terms differ
| Term | What it describes | Construction clue |
|---|---|---|
| Grand feu | The firing approach | Enamel is built up in layers and fused to a metal base by high-temperature firing. |
| Cloisonné | The design construction | Fine wire outlines boundaries, making cells that are filled with enamel. |
| Champlevé | The design construction | Recesses are cut or engraved into the metal base and filled with enamel. |
Grand feu: the firing process
Grand feu means “great fire” and refers to firing enamel at high temperature. In its description of its own process, Ulysse Nardin says its enamel is fired above 800°C on silver plates. That figure describes the manufacturer’s process, not a universal temperature specification for every enamel dial.

Cloisonné: wire-defined cells
In cloisonné, an artisan bends and places fine wire to trace the boundaries of a pattern. The resulting compartments, or cloisons, are filled with enamel, often in different colors. The wire remains part of the visible design, separating its colored areas. Patek Philippe describes this sequence in its account of a world-time dial.

Champlevé: enamel in cut recesses
In champlevé, material is removed from the metal dial base to make recesses for enamel. Depending on the design, the recesses may be milled mechanically or engraved by hand; intricate work can require detailed hand engraving. The remaining metal separates the enamel-filled areas and may leave parts of the original base raised. Patek Philippe’s craft explanation describes the method.
Why the labels can appear together
Grand feu identifies firing, while cloisonné and champlevé identify construction. Because they describe different parts of the process, a dial can use grand feu firing with either method—or combine both construction techniques.

Patek Philippe’s Ref. 6002R-001 is one example: the maker describes its brown dial as grand feu champlevé and cloisonné enamel. In a June 2021 release, it specifies champlevé for the dial’s periphery, moon-phase aperture, and the moon on the rotating disc. The metal is milled away around these elements, leaving features such as the minute scale raised.

- Look for wire boundaries. Fine lines visibly separating enamel cells are a clue to cloisonné.
- Look for recessed enamel. Enamel sitting within cavities in a metal surface, with raised metal between areas, is consistent with champlevé.
- Check what the maker says about firing. A visible design alone does not establish that a dial was made using grand feu; look for the manufacturer’s process description.
- Allow for mixed techniques. A single dial may use both cloisonné and champlevé in different areas, as the Ref. 6002R-001 example shows.
These clues help explain the construction, but they do not establish a quality or durability ranking. The cited descriptions do not provide a controlled comparison showing that one technique is inherently better or longer-lasting than another.

How long enamel work takes
The time depends on the work involved. Patek Philippe says an enamel dial may take from several hours to several weeks, and miniature painting can take several months. This is the manufacture’s stated range, not a universal production-time benchmark. Patek Philippe explains the variation in its craft overview.
