The Esoteric Bathyal Oscuro is a large, black DLC-coated automatic dive watch with a matte sandwich dial, a Miyota 9015 movement and a manufacturer-specified 60 ATM water-resistance rating. Its 44 mm case and distinctive grooved bezel give it a bold tool-watch look; the most useful published hands-on account describes a comfortable fit on one reviewer’s wrist, but it is not an independent dive test. Ocean Crawler’s Esoteric collection page displayed the Oscuro as sold out on October 7, 2026, so the price shown on its product page should not be read as proof of current stock.
What is the Esoteric Bathyal Oscuro?
The Oscuro is the black-dial colorway of Esoteric’s Bathyal. Ocean Crawler lists a DLC-coated stainless-steel case and bracelet, and describes the dial as matte black with deep sandwich cutouts, old-radium-colored lume and a black date wheel. The bezel has grooved dive-time markers and a unidirectional 120-click action. The overall design combines vintage cues with a conspicuously dark finish. Ocean Crawler’s product page is the source for the current model description.
In his January 31, 2020 WatchReport review, Don Evans wrote that the Bathyal was “very much inspired by the Bulova Snorkel.” He also said the dial was somewhat inspired by a now-defunct 1970s brand, but did not name it. Treat both points as the reviewer’s design interpretation, not a manufacturer-confirmed account. Evans’s review also describes the bezel as unusual and potentially polarizing, while still usable for timing activities.

| Weight | 215 g | WatchReport, Don Evans, 2020; review-reported figure |
Evans reported the watch as 600 meters water resistant in 2020; Ocean Crawler’s product page currently specifies 60 ATM. Neither source establishes an independent test result. The official specification is the relevant figure to use when comparing listed ratings, while actual dive suitability also depends on the condition of the particular watch and its seals.
How does it wear?
The 44 mm diameter makes the Oscuro a substantial watch, but lug-to-lug length is also important when judging how it may sit across a wrist. Evans said the 48 mm lug-to-lug made the diameter feel manageable on his wrist and described his review watch as snug and comfortable. That is one person’s impression, not a fit guarantee; wrist shape, strap or bracelet adjustment, and personal preferences all affect wear.

Ocean Crawler lists the thickness as 14.0 mm. Evans’s 2020 review explained that the case itself was about 13 mm before the boxed sapphire crystal brought the total to 14 mm. The profile is therefore worth considering alongside the diameter, especially if a low-profile watch is a priority.
Dial, bezel and movement impressions
Sandwich dial and lume
The cutout markers provide depth against the matte black dial, while the old-radium color gives the lume a warmer, vintage-leaning appearance. Evans liked the large markers and the lume on the prototype he handled. That assessment is subjective and prototype-specific; Ocean Crawler describes the lume’s appearance but does not substantiate a comparative brightness or duration claim. Evans also found the color-matched black date wheel less easy to read. The same low-contrast treatment that keeps the dial visually cohesive can make the date less conspicuous.

Grooved bezel
The bezel’s grooved markers and 120-click unidirectional action are listed by Ocean Crawler. Evans considered the design unusual and potentially divisive, though he found it usable for timing. Buyers who prioritize quick at-a-glance alignment should inspect the marker layout and operation in person if possible; the available review does not provide controlled comparisons or measurements of bezel accuracy.
Miyota 9015
The official listing identifies a regulated Miyota 9015 automatic movement. Evans reported little rotor noise on the prototype he reviewed, but that is an individual observation rather than a guarantee about every production watch. The cited sources do not provide measured timekeeping results or long-term reliability data.

Bracelet, clasp and strap options
Ocean Crawler lists a stainless-steel bracelet and handmade leather strap, with 22 mm lugs. Evans noted that the bracelet clasp on the watch he handled had no dive extension. He suggested a rubber strap for wearing over a wetsuit and said production models were expected to have a quick-release bracelet. The official product page does not confirm a rubber strap or the current clasp configuration, so check the exact unit before relying on either feature. A 22 mm lug width indicates the nominal strap size, but does not by itself establish compatibility with every strap.

For context, Evans’s January 2020 review reported a $599 preorder price and $799 stated retail price at launch. Those are historical launch-era figures, not current pricing. Microbrand Atlas’s archive, updated August 19, 2026, lists an $899 reference price but cautions that archive prices may not reflect current availability or launch MSRP. A pre-owned eBay listing checked October 7, 2026 establishes only that one seller had a resale listing at that time; it does not establish authorized new stock, warranty terms or a stable market price. Quick Recap
Who should consider it?
- Consider it if you want a visually distinctive black dive watch, appreciate sandwich-dial construction and vintage-colored lume, and are comfortable with a 44 mm case and 14 mm listed thickness.
- Look closely before buying if you need a subtle watch, a highly legible date, an uncomplicated bezel design, or a bracelet clasp with a confirmed dive extension.
- Compare carefully if you are assessing it as dive equipment: 60 ATM is the manufacturer’s stated rating, and the cited sources do not report an independent pressure or dive test.
