Journe Sonnerie Souveraine is a discontinued chiming wristwatch, reference GS, combining automatic grande and petite sonnerie modes with a separately activated minute repeater. Its hand-wound Calibre 1505 powers the striking system as well as the time display. F.P. Journe gives the model’s production years as 2006–2019.
What is the F.P. Journe Sonnerie Souveraine?
It is a high-complication wristwatch designed to chime the time in two different ways: automatically as the hours and quarters pass, or on demand when the wearer activates its minute repeater. A selector at 4 o’clock chooses the strike mode, while a pusher at 2 o’clock activates the repeater. The watch also has a silent mode.
F.P. Journe identifies it as reference GS, powered by the manually wound Calibre 1505. The company lists the model’s production period as 2006 to 2019, so it is discontinued rather than a current-production watch.
How do grande sonnerie and petite sonnerie differ?
In grande sonnerie mode, the watch automatically chimes the hours at each hour and the hours plus quarters at each quarter. In petite sonnerie mode, it limits the automatic passing strikes to the quarters. These are explanations of the modes as described by Phillips; the minute repeater is different because the wearer deliberately triggers it rather than waiting for the time to pass.

The controls make that distinction tangible: the 4 o’clock selector changes the automatic strike mode, and the 2 o’clock pusher is for the on-demand minute repeater. F.P. Journe’s published specifications identify those controls but do not provide a detailed operating sequence, so consult the watch’s documentation before using the controls on a specific example.

How does the striking mechanism manage its energy?
A sonnerie has to use its energy not just to keep time, but also to strike repeatedly. F.P. Journe describes balancing those demands—while maintaining sound and reliability—as a central engineering challenge. The maker says development involved six years of research and ten patents; those are manufacturer-reported figures.
F.P. Journe says one mainspring provides 24 hours of grande sonnerie, or 96 full passing chimes, without using the minute repeater, and that striking consumes almost 60% of the mainspring’s energy. These are the company’s descriptions of the design, not independent measurements. It also describes silence mode as allowing five days of running; its specification table gives the more precise figure of approximately 120 hours without striking.

Explaining the safety goal, François-Paul Journe said the mechanism should be safe to use by “an eight-year-old child.” The quotation is attributed to him by the manufacturer.
Why is the case steel, and what can be said about its sound?
Sotheby’s describes the steel case as a choice intended to support the chime, and points to the visible hammers and movement as part of the watch’s presentation. That is the auction house’s characterization of the design; it should not be read as an independently established acoustic comparison with other case materials.

Phillips records one 2008 Sonnerie Souveraine, engraved “Gabrielle,” as sold for CHF 680,400. That is a result for a particular historical lot, not a current price, a representative average or a guarantee of what another example might sell for. The cited auction record and Sotheby’s description provide historical and collecting context; they do not establish current availability or value.
