The result is a watch whose movement architecture becomes its dial—and whose positional rationale is a design claim from the maker, not independent proof of improved accuracy. This article reviews published hands-on coverage; it does not claim personal handling of the watch.
Why F.P. Journe made the tourbillon vertical
Announced in Geneva in January 2019, the Tourbillon Souverain Vertical marked the 20th anniversary of F.P. Journe’s Tourbillon Souverain. The wristwatch line began in 1999 with a tourbillon and remontoir d’égalité; a 2003 generation added natural deadbeat seconds. The Vertical keeps that mechanical lineage but changes the cage’s orientation from the traditional horizontal arrangement to a vertical one. F.P. Journe’s official product page presents the model and its specifications.
François-Paul Journe says he designed the vertical arrangement so the tourbillon’s functions remain constant whether the watch is flat or on its side. The maker’s specification lists amplitude above 260° in both dial-up and 24-hour vertical positions. These are manufacturer-stated aims and figures; they are not independently reproduced accuracy tests, and they do not establish that the watch keeps better time than a horizontal tourbillon.
How the tourbillon, remontoir and deadbeat seconds work together
The vertical tourbillon
The cage completes one revolution every 30 seconds. That is faster than the one-minute rotation the manufacturer uses as a conventional point of comparison. The cage is the regulating display architecture; its vertical position is the design feature Journe associates with consistent function in different orientations.

The remontoir d’égalité
A remontoir d’égalité is a constant-force mechanism. Monochrome’s published hands-on article explains this version as a small spring in the gear train that periodically loads and unloads, smoothing the torque delivered to the escapement as the mainspring unwinds. In this watch it rewinds once per second. That explanation describes the mechanism; the published coverage does not provide an independent bench test or accuracy measurement.
Natural deadbeat seconds
The seconds hand advances in distinct one-second steps rather than sweeping continuously. Here the remontoir also drives that indication. The three elements have different roles: the tourbillon cage rotates, the remontoir supplies constant force, and the deadbeat seconds display shows elapsed seconds in steps.

Calibre 1519 and the display layout
The manually wound calibre 1519 has 230 components, 32 jewels and a stated frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz). F.P. Journe specifies an 80 ± 2 hour power reserve. The case measures 42.00 mm across and 13.60 mm high, and is offered in platinum or 18K 6N gold according to the manufacturer’s product page.
The architecture is unusually legible because the bridges themselves form much of the visible dial. They are made in 4N gold and finished with Clous de Paris guilloché, while an enamel hours-and-minutes dial sits at 3 o’clock. The vertical tourbillon appears at 9, small seconds at 6, and the power-reserve display at 12. A polished conical reflector frames the cage; the manufacturer also describes a second reflector on the movement side.

Reported price and availability
Monochrome reported prices of CHF 243,900 for the 18K red-gold version and CHF 247,800 for platinum in its article. Those are historical figures from that coverage, not current quotes. The article also reported that the Vertical replaced the classic Tourbillon Souverain in the permanent collection, was not limited in number at the time, and was produced in low volumes. The reviewed sources do not establish today’s price, stock, wait time or availability by region, so confirm those details directly with F.P. Journe or an authorized boutique before making a purchase decision.
The manufacturer’s Black Label policy is specific to that collection: it is available only to existing F.P. Journe watch owners and through the brand’s boutiques and Espaces. That policy should not be taken as a general availability rule for every Tourbillon Souverain Vertical configuration.

What the Vertical changes—and what it does not prove
The Vertical’s distinctiveness is not simply that its tourbillon is upright. It combines that orientation with a 30-second cage rotation, a once-per-second constant-force remontoir, deadbeat seconds and an exposed movement that serves as the dial. Journe’s explanation for the orientation is about maintaining consistent tourbillon function across positions. Without independent comparative measurements, however, that rationale should not be converted into a claim of superior accuracy.
