F.P. Journe’s F.F.C. is “digital” only in the old sense of digits: an articulated mechanical hand forms each hour with its fingers. Minutes appear on a separate rotating dial. There is no electronic screen; the unusual display is driven by a mechanical movement.
How does the F.F.C. display 12 hours with five fingers?
The hand changes configuration to represent the hour, while a rotating minute ring supplies the minutes. F.P. Journe describes the hours and minutes as instantaneous digital indications; here, “digital” means the hour is expressed as a digit-like reading, not that the watch is electronic. The maker’s F.F.C. collection page presents the display and its mechanism.
The hand’s form draws on a prosthesis drawing associated with Ambroise Paré. The watch version is engraved titanium, chosen, according to F.P. Journe, to keep the moving mass and energy demand down.
What moves the fingers?
F.P. Journe says a remontoir d’égalité sits between the main gear train and the display. During the hour it is rewound; at the hour, it releases energy to ten cams, which actuate the fingers. The maker says this arrangement balances the energy needed for the display.

The minute ring completes one revolution in 12 hours. In its account of the design, François-Paul Journe put the central engineering problem this way: “The most important thing in watchmaking is what is least visible. In this case, it was a matter of getting five fingers to move with the least amount of effort”. This quotation and explanation are published by F.P. Journe; they are the maker’s description of the mechanism.
How did the F.F.C. originate?
F.P. Journe traces the idea to a 2012 dinner conversation with filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola in Napa Valley. Coppola asked whether a watch could tell time using a hand, and Journe later took up the design challenge. Journe says he began prototyping in 2014; the maker announced the production F.F.C. on 27 March 2023, after two years of reflection and seven years of development. Its launch announcement describes the watch joining the Classique collection.

F.P. Journe’s 2021 material quotes Journe recalling the question behind the display: “But how to display 12 hours with 5 fingers?” He also says Coppola sent sketches of finger positions. The maker’s FFC Blue page includes this account in connection with the prototype.
What are the production F.F.C.’s specifications?
The figures below are the specifications listed for the production F.F.C. on F.P. Journe’s collection page, accessed in 2026—not specifications to assume for every prototype.

The maker also describes the movement as running for 120 hours, or five days, in its mechanism account. Its FFC Blue prototype page gives a different reserve figure, ±140 hours, so that prototype figure should not be substituted for the production model’s stated specification.

“F.F.C.” can refer to the production model or to distinct prototype watches. The production watch joined the Classique collection in 2023. The two prototypes below are separate examples, with their own materials, documentation and reported auction results.
